Why is the Conviction Rate in Japan 99 Percent?
This has become a pretty big issue in Japan recently, especially since a couple of years ago when it was discovered that prosecutors in the city of Osaka had
unlawfully obtained confessionsfabricated evidence for dozens of cases. The scandal led to lots of resignations and calls for re-trials.There have actually been a lot of people in the past couple of years let off death row here because new evidence (DNA, crime reconstructions, etc.) has shown that they could not have been responsible for the crime. Still, the system is totally borked right now and the police/prosecutors have most of the power. There's been a lot of talk about the changes that need to be made (limiting interrogation times, requiring all interrogations to be video recorded, etc.) but nothing concrete has happened yet AFAIK.
Stingray jumps onto ramp for food
That's awesome. Also, stingrays feel incredible. I was recently at the Osaka Aquarium and they had a petting section with some sharks (not sure what kind) and some stingrays. The sharks felt coarse (and were also covered in lots of individual particles of sand), but the stingrays had this kind of slimy texture, sort of like algae without the residue. It was really amazing.
Jetdaisuke Reviews Mc Donald's Mega Potato

10,000 Japanese Perform Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Ode to Joy
This video got me interested in exactly why 10 000 Japanese people would choose to perform a notoriously difficult piece, in German.
The Japanese call the piece Daiku and perform it every year in December. The largest of these gatherings is most likely the one in this video, "Suntory Presents Beethoven's 9th with a Cast of 10000," in the Osaka Castle Hall. It could also be the special concert from December 2011 which was dedicated to victims of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and in fact the pictures of that event look quite like this video.
It turns out that it is because in the first world war Japan was allied with Britain, and ended up with some German prisoners of war in Japan. In June 1918, German POWs gave a legendary concert in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, where they played the Ninth. Since then it has become quite popular in Japan.
There is an article from 2010 in www.japantimes.co.jp on this subject.
Sashimi-san is one mean f**king cat!

Just to clarify (I'm a noob), when you link a playlist, do you enter the length for the entire playlist or for just the first video in the playlist?

I think... and it's a very vague thing here, but I think its something about the cat belonging to his little brother? Seems like he's cat sitting. Might explain why the cat doesn't like him if it's not to fond of strangers.
With what little Japanese I know (I live in Osaka, but my language ability is teh shit), its his sister's cat and he comes over to stay at her place at times (maybe as you said to catsit?).
This video is entirely inappropriate
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
She definitely has that "English teacher living too long in Japan" voice pattern down.
It reminds me of a comic I saw in Kansai Timeout in Osaka:
Two gaijin men pass each other on a train platform, the first one says "This is a pen". The second one says "I am a man". They both crack up laughing and keep on walking.

I love the sound this makes for the different patterns as the water hits.
The kids reactions make this video even better.
Dang kids! Quiet so I can enjoy the water view!

promote this delicious Sailor Moon parody!
I only wish it was just Sailor Moon.
Here in Osaka I can't get through the day without my daughter bouncing off the sofa, re-enacting a transformation scene in one of her shows.
This one's currently her favorite:

Japan You So Crazy!
>> ^bareboards2:
Is anybody else seriously creeped out by the infantilization of Japanese women? The stuffed animals? The pigeon-toes? The pigtails?
Yuck.
I live in Osaka. Although I've gotten used to it, sometimes I have to stand back and just go "WTF?" every now and then. Everything is "kawaii" here, even the cops have little cutesy mascots on their citations. And don't get me started on the emasculation of males. If they had their way, I'd be sitting or kneeling just to take a piss. Uggh.
