Life in Nunavut - Up Here Magazine

therealblankman says...

Sweet. I spent the best part of a year up in what is now Nunavut, then still the Northwest Territories. A little Hamlet called Kugluktuk. Every Canadian should visit the North at least once. Thunder Bay doesn't count.

No Deathcow, he doesn't have to agree with me - but it helps if he doesn't stereotype people (my people, BTW) as 'out of touch with reality'.

Thanks for the geography lesson. In Nunavut, today, the population density is roughly 1 person for every 63 square kilometers. Your point?

I never said people of European descent have no right to live there, don't be thick. I did, however, imply that it was rich for you to complain about THEM, from a historical perspective and all.

And that message wasn't private you hoser, I purposely left it as a public message.

My name is Robin (and I used to be an alcoholic). I live with my spouse (common-law/co-habitation) and am going to propose to her any day now. We have 2 awesome kids - a 5 YO boy and a 6 week old girl. I'm a full-time student studying Political Science (mix of Canadian and International politics), with a minor in legal studies. I will be done school in the spring. I also do contract work on the side ranging from logistics/coordination work, health research, conference facilitation, and other assorted work. I live in Ottawa (which is Canada's capital, NOT Toronto) but I am originally from Nunavut.

For fun I come to VS, partake of bud and beer with my homies, listen to hip hop (I love the sift because it brings me in contact with all kinds of cool music), read news, write letters to the editor, and play COD4. I plan on going into law school next fall, after which I'll probably find a full-time job as a policy analyst until I decide to run for office. I was heavily involved with a political party until about a year or 2 ago (the party screwed over someone near and dear to me, but they are now crawling back asking for forgiveness, so I may get involved again).

It's definitely not their best work, but I only discovered it last night after some heavy smoking and a few drinks. It has sentimental value to me.

Apparently RHCP wrote the song after conducting a private concert with some other heavyweights (Metallica and a few others) up in Resolute Bay, Nunavut back in 1992. A few people I knew bought tickets and attended.

Some of the lyrics are very poignant - "Desperate and it shows". My home is rife with poverty, alcoholism, etc. At this point I'm rambling so I'll stop. I understand where you're coming from on the screen shot.

Dunno man, I have never been able to justify a song with a screen shot-SO much music I'd love to publish that has no video content-OK...Her's an unsolicited review of the song-Non-sequitur cliche, simple, unappealing melody, whiny delivery. RHCP's have done much better-they lost their steam after Californication-Time for the boys to retire to their life of tours, live shows, and playing the hits over and over to less-than-packed crowds of 30-somethings.....The Foghat syndrome.

Qujannamiik Throbbin!
I find the language very fascinating, and I was pleased to see they had audio examples for most words. I'd love to visit Iqaluit and other places in Nunavut and northern Canada in general. One day :}

The Peregrine Falcon - Nature's Ace Pilot

Throbbin says...

Those birds are so awesome. We get them up in Nunavut near my home community. Not only are they beautiful, but scary as hell too. As kids we would climb up small hills on top of which they nested. If eggs were in the nest, the parents would take turns swooping down on us and knicking our heads. They would literally touch our hair at amazing speeds. We knew they would never hit us (our skulls would cause more damage to them than they would do to us).

Amazing birds, and always fun to watch them hunt.

Also, not only do peregrine falcons experience the highest G-forces of any large animal - they are also the fastest animals on earth (when they go into the dives).

Cool. Iqaluit is a nice place to visit. I lived there for a coupla years, wouldn't repeat, but a nice place to visit.

I actually graduated from the high school on the hill (not the white one, but a similar blue and white one above it).

Unfortunately that igloo church burnt down a year or 2 ago.

I think every Canadian should visit Nunavut at least once.

I often say that Canadians perceive Nunavut the way Americans perceive Canada.

I know it some. I know some people who used to live in Iqaluit, too -- they were there for five years recently. I used my Aeroplan points to visit them there -- saw the big white modular school and the igloo church and so on.

I, for one, am for Texas becoming it's own country. We can send all the right-wing extremists there and they can come up with as much insane bullshit as they want.

Can we send all rabid Liberals into Nunavut so they can have their own frozen wasteland to rule over? See easy to reply to an equally bat shit statement by someone. Personally anytime a politician of any stripe starts pandering like mad to anyone, I start wondering why. And exactly what are they trying to gain from it.

Personally I look at this, and happily see that plenty of people haven't quite figured out that whole cultural pluralism thing. It's still kicking them in the ass, and wholly believe that their view is the only correct one in the world. That applies to your nuts on the left and the right.
