Any Sifters bought an iPad? (Blog Entry by dag)

I'm sorry wait - are you saying that Windows changed a paradigm by inventing a GUI?
I would argue that Apple - yes, has invented a paradigm changing GUI - (again). Flicking to scroll around a capacitive touchscreen all seems very passe in perfect 20/20 hindsight - but so-called smart phones weren't doing it before the iPhone. Have a look at a Nokia or Windows Mobile phone from that era- and it's pretty clear. static icons, optimised for a stylus or control pad, nothing harnessing the power of your finger. The Android phones are very good- I might get one some day - but they owe a debt of innovation to Apple for blazing the trail.
I'm sure that getting a game distributed through EA or Steam would be great, and they may have better terms than Apple - but I'd argue that single hacker working in his basement to make something cool has a very slim chance in brokering a deal with EA or Valve. The App store is making a lot of these single programmers very rich - and I think that's a good, disruptive thing.

Apple has once again changed the paradigm of how we use computers.
Apple has empowered a whole generation of "little guy" developers to make good money from the app ecosystem - wresting power from the established game behemoths like EA.

"Changed the paradigm"? What are you smoking, mate? They might have changed the paradigm if they invented the touch screen (they didn't). They might have changed the paradigm if they invented a new, ultra-popular activity that we use computers for, like twitter or facebook or e-mail (they didn't). They might have changed the paradigm if they invented the mouse or a GUI like Windows (they didn't). They might have changed the paradigm if they invented MS Office or at least an equal alternative to at least one of its products (they haven't). But a simple rework on an ages-old tablet device which is only becoming popular now because of the brand and the drop in price which they can take very little, if any, credit for? Puhh-lease.
And as for your second argument - try and compare Apple terms for iPhone devs to EA Partners terms or Valve's Steam terms. You'll find that there are few publishers with shittier deals for game and software devs than Apple. And by the way - moving into the social mini-game market isn't exactly "wresting power" from publishers of AAA console and PC publishers like EA.

Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis? Hahaha...see what I did there? I said that thing Gary Coleman used to say and now he's dead. Just as dead as the horse you guys are kicking...

Thankful For Bold Risks and Trail Breakers (Blog Entry by dag)

^Old Nokia phones were fantastic. They had a good build- the UI was simple and worked well. They put a lot of thought into the software and hardware design. Sometime around 2005 or a little before- Nokia kind of went nuts. There were suddenly 10X the number of models - and the tight UI and build quality started to fall apart. This was the best dedicated phone I ever owned.

What exactly are the advancements apple has introduced with the iPhone? Icons on a background? They haven't invented the touch-screen afaik. If you consider the lawsuit legit then Nokia and Ericsson should sue the living crap out of each and every cellphone manufacturer.

They should devote their energy to fixing the POS that is iTunes OR letting me manage my music/videos with third party software like WinAmp. Seriously, Apple is the new Microsoft

Steve Jobs: "Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal" (1996)

Croccydile says...

This is quite worrysome in general outside of Apple trying to squeeze money out of HTC. Nokia and other phone makers have been going at it over some of the most trivial bullshit I could possibly imagine. Really it is a case of the patent system being broken and (insert company here) taking advantage of this. IANAL but I believe say you have a patent for a design/system in 2002, but (next big thing) happens in 2003 and everyone is doing it you can tack it on to your 2002 patent and then sue the shit out of everyone else.

Who can you trust anymore? None of these big companies are out for the good of the consumer, no matter how much you want to believe otherwise.

Pee Wee Herman Gets An iPad!

I hadn't heard that Pee-Wee was making a comeback, but I just saw him on Conan a couple of weeks ago, and now he's doing a sketch using some of the Pee-Wee's Playhouse set. Is Ruebens planning to bring Pee-Wee back to TV? It's surprising to see that the character doesn't look to have aged as much as Ruebens has.

He has a live show in Nokia theater in L.A.: http://www.peewee.com/new/show.html

Waltz based on the annoying Nokia Phone ring

ReverendTed says...

...and so we come full circle.
As it mentions at the bottom of the first page of music, the (now infamous) Nokia ringtone was itself based on four bars from Tarrega's "Waltz in A Minor", or "Gran Vals".

This is like one of those situations where you've got a "Novelization of the Film"...based on a movie...that was itself based on a novel in the first place.

HP Webcams are Racist

rebuilder says...

Not the first time I've heard of similar issues. Some time back at Nokia they were developing a system that would detect when the phone was pressed against the user's ear and switch the loudspeaker mode on and off based on that information, but their implementation turned out not to work with dark-skinned people... I'm not sure if they managed to get it working later, but AFAIK at that time that flaw made them scratch the feature altogether.

Swype > iPhone typing

jubuttib says...

>> ^rosser99:
BS. I am not by a long shot what anyone would consider a texting junkie, and I was able to keep strict pace with the Swype phone. When you use the iPhone's automatic period system (hit space bar twice), it saves a lot of key strokes that they were using in this demo, not to mention an iPhone typer who was deliberately laborious and slow.

True, I was easily able to keep up and was actually faster using my Nokia 5800. Still, seems like a pretty good system, will most likely be much faster for some people.

The Future? - Nokia Mixed Reality

theali says...

Nokia has sold eavesdropping equipment to Iran's government which is used to oppress its citizens. Iranian have repeatedly asked Nokia to share with them details of the technology, so that they can avoid or bypass the eavesdropping. But Nokia has refused to share life saving information, and is continueing its service contract with the Iranian government!

This technology has been used to threaten, imprison, rape and even result in death of people. Still Nokia is NOT sharing the detail.

For example with Siemens, we know they have sold Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to Iranian government, in which case SSL would allow safe surfing. But same level of information is not publicized by Nokia, I was very shocked ans saddened.
