Firefox 3.5 Treats Videos Like Web Pages

As a web developer, I have no doubt you will learn the new features in HTML5 when the protocol is released, to be able to use them properly.
What I found more interesting is the video player swap, without interrupting the actual stream. At the moment, any attempt to do something like that would involve reloading the embedded object completely, as far as I know.

The HTML5 spec will not be out for a very long time. The same stuff was talked about when the IPv5 spec came out. Look at the adaptation rates of that. Not to mention most sites fail simple WC3 and CSS validation right now.

Apple, Nokia and other firms have spoken against the usage of Ogg codecs handling video and audio. Mostly because they have their own formats to protect and promote, like Quicktime.

Just color me skeptical.

Looking forward to the new iPhone 3GS (Blog Entry by dag)

It's strange that while I'm stuck in front of my laptop most days that I just can't get into mobile tech that much. I'm dependent on my mobile admittedly but worrying about the precise type and configuration has never bothered me. I am also worried about mobile data charges so I never use the web on the move.

I'm reasonably happy with my Nokia 6120 with it's back cover held on by sellotape.

I want a Videosift app for my Blackberry Storm (Blog Entry by swampgirl)

Farhad2000 says...

You should get a real phone like a Nokia E71.

The Blackberry is only useful because of its BBM service and push mail capabilities its really a phone for business users, but they have been fairly successful marketing it as some kind of actual phone.

Apple Owns Patent on the Multi-Touch Interface (Geek Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

If it was Microsoft I'd be screaming bloody murder - but, you know - it's Apple, so it's insanely great. (at least I recognize my hypocrisy)

Apple innovated the hell out of the iPhone. In hindsight you look at it and think, "yes, of course- everyone should be making phones like this"

But Nokia, Motorola, Samsung et al couldn't even make a phone browser that didn't make you want to pull your hair out.

Now, in the sincerest form of flattery, all of the usual companies are making large touch screen, internet focused phones- and it seems natural that a multi-touch screen would be useful. But Apple got there first. They did the hard R&D yards and took the risk, it's only right that they should reap the rewards.

The evolution of the cell phone

RedSky says...

>> ^xgabex:
Am I the only one who uses a good number of the functions on my cell phone? Amongst other things, it serves as a quick and dirty camera, mp3 player (it's one of those Walkman-branded Sony Ericsson ones, so that's kind of its purpose, but I digress), alarm, calendar, I use text messages as well as the occasional picture message, and so on.

You've probably named the most commonly used aspects of mobile phones, but there are just so many more that are crammed on nowadays that I would doubt 5% of consumers use.

I find the issue is, people inevitably assume that a multi-faceted electronics device is as good as the individual components bought seperately, which is really just not the case. Camera on phones are far better nowadays, mostly due to the fall in price of digital cameras, but when they initially appeared they were truly absymal. Nowadays you see every Nokia/Motorola/S-E and their dog pushing their integrated digital audio players, but compared to dedicated units they again sound pretty deplorable. I mean, try using anything other than earbuds with them, or slightly less efficient higher ohm rated headphones, they'll just sound crippled.

Not to mention much of the time they'll charge you more for all the features combined as opposed to buying seperately, mostly due to the looks premium. I mean you could probably argue that some would prefer a compact unit, but when the additionally functionality crammed on is sub-standard, that's a bit rich.

Then again, mobile phones are after all fashion accessories anyway, much of what I say above is pretty negligence but I just hate to see this insidious up-selling. It's kind of like department stores pedalling off 2,000/3,000 dollar desktop PCs to consumers for word processing and basic internet/email use. Hell, I'm sure I could easily track down new individual components and a monitor that would perfectly capable for that job at $500 or less.

Anyway /rant off.
