They're all good in different ways.

Hamill is by far the most consistent, with the best vocal range. He's like the technical guitar player on his laughing strings. He knows what his Joker is supposed to sound like and he nails it every time.

When he hits it right Nicholson's is the most natural. Unlike the others he sounds genuinely and heartily amused; his has soul.

For scary, actually I'm not really all that amused I'm just an evil fucking psychotic that's restless, impatient and only mildly entertained at the best of times, and I'm only genuinely amused at other people's futility in the face of how pointless everything is, Ledger nails it. He's the artist.

Out of all three I choose Ledger for the scene at 2:10 and the way his laugh changes. That was chilling when I first watched it.

It's interesting how comics offer so much room for interpretation of character.

Nicholson by a mile, but my vote is only between heath and jack because the cartoon was never big when and where i grew up.

There's really no getting around the fact that jack was born with the correct face to BE the joker.

Such is what I noticed this time around, a lot I never noticed the previous viewing. They just make fun of a lot of situations, how agencies handle things etc.

I'm a huge fan of this movie and I'd say it's not really funny at all. Or at least Jack Nicholson is not funny at all. This scene donesn't feel very Tim Burton. It feels like they were trying to keep as much footage of Jack in the movie as possible and that's not how you make a funny/good movie. This might be the only movie where he's one of the worst things about it.

I love Ledger's performance and TDK is a great movie (if overrated due to a mess of a 3rd act).

But I always say the writing of The Joker in TDK felt off to me. He seems to want to make statements and affect people's feelings. But Joker doesn't care what anyone thinks or feels. Not even Batman. He only cares for his own amusement and he's mostly amused by people dying (unless you're doing the crime-boss version of Joker who is basically that but aims his sick plans at making money). To me Jack Nicholson's joker is closer to the real spirit of the character... a true psychotic clown who "kills people until art happens".

For the record I also think The Killing Joke sort of screws up the character, despite being a brilliant comic in and of itself.
