Ultra-Pure Water Tastes Like Nothing And Can Kill You

Sylvester_Ink says...

Once upon a time, National Geographic was serious, educational, and interesting. Now they find the need to be all "EXTREME" with people like this guy pandering to the audience, because clearly the general public is too stupid and has too short an attention span to actually listen to the stuff.

And yet, somehow we can tolerate David Attenborough's completely dry and boringly British delivery.

[EDIT]Oh, and remember the old theme song? Now THAT was a theme song!

Ball Girl Removes Cockroach from Court at Australian Open

I remember this video... I believe she is actually a bugphobic... I seem to remember that there was an interview with her where she says she is.

Yea I think I saw that on a documentary once too on the National Geographic channel. Something like 'Bugaphobes' or 'Babes who can't stand bugs ' can't remember which, def. began with a 'B'

The World's Most Powerful Photographs

RFlagg says...

A few key pictures seem to be missing...

The Napalm Girl picture, which just turned 40 last month.

The KSU Shooting picture of Mary Ann Vecchio.

The V-J Day in Times Square kiss.

The National Geographic picture of Sharbat Gula, although that might not fit the mold the rest of them do, that one is just great photo and not so much a moment caught the way the others are.

Of course I guess we could all point to pictures that caught a moment that we think should have been added to the list...

Challenges of Getting to Mars

That's a lot of bullshit over-dramatization for information that seems interesting enough on its own.

One of my main issues with Discovery, History, National Geographic channels, etc... Do the people producing this stuff really have that little faith in the content they're presenting or are so oblivious to what good content is to think it needs all this shaky-cam cgi, mood lighted talking heads, dramatic music and whatnot to stay interesting?

Regarding the video... What a wild way to get a rover on the surface! Can't wait to see some rover-eye view video of the landing!

Thanks for voicing my exact sentiments and sharing some of your experiences.

I know concerned parents such as ourselves are probably more likely to have well-adjusted kids, but I still wish there could be some way to really shield their brains from being deformed by all the poison that surrounds them.

I worry often and a lot about how I can possibly keep my sons from being perverted by this society.

Ditto. I think back to me growing up and the sort of soft introduction to adult material. First you'd see topless women in National Geographics, then maybe some 'lad's mags' in the store, nothing naked, just bikini stuff... then you might get hold of a Playboy and see naked women. And back then they were pretty much natural women too (sure, not 'average', but at least not silicon and botox plumped versions).

Then you might get to see some actual porn mags at your 'rough' friend's place...

These days: "Go on web, look up sex in google image search and get inundated with hard, filthy sex"

Yeah, quite concerned. Doing our best to shield our kids from it as much as possible. Plenty of talk about what sex is (we have 3 boys and a girl all under 9), and that side of things (my wife is a midwife, so it kind of comes up a lot), but shielding as much as possible from not just sex on the internet, but also what passes for mainstream music videos these days (I mean, fucking Katy Perry... FUCK).

I'm with you lucky. I have no problem with sex... no problem with masturbation, no problem with porn in and of itself (just what 90% of it has become)... but how engrained it's become and how central and how much it's pushing into the lives of younger and younger kids.

Yeah, it's not good :
