TYT: Pot Smoking Led To Loughner Shooting

peggedbea says...

Schizophrenia runs in my family. So....I've known and loved and lived with lots of schizophrenics. Pot definitely helped manage the symptoms of those who chose to use it. One was even told by his shrink to continue smoking it as it worked really well for him provided he didn't combine it with alcohol or other drugs. For an exboyfriend, self medicating with pot prevented him from self medicated with harder substances.

It also doesn't cause nasty side effects like tardive dyskensia, which is a worry with traditionally prescribed anti-psychotics. I'm not suggesting anyone stop taking their anti psychotics and rely on marijuana, I'm just saying, I've got a load of anecdotal evidence that tells me pot is often helpful to schiozphrenics.

When my schizophrenic cousin joey (a regular pot smoker since age 14) killed himself, he hadn't smoked in 4 months.... he was keeping his urine clean while on probation.... if he had failed one more drug test, they would've sent him to jail. he was 24 years old, his crime? possession of marijuana. My aunt says those last 4 months were the most terrifying of either of their lives. joey's symptoms were so terrifying that he threw himself in front of a train.

fuck prohibition.

In fact, it may even help people with the disease cope with their symptoms.
Or they rapin e'rebody. Probably 50/50, so lets outlaw a plant.
I think pot use led to the purchase of a large capacity magazine to increase his killing power. Therefore we should outlaw pot and make weapons more powerful.

I hate to sound the cynic (and I'm high right now) but this is just to take the steam out of Prop 19, which would make it LEGAL for personal use and allows small plots of personal marijuana gardens to be grown.

TYT: Why Taxing Pot Make So Much Sense?

rgroom1 says...

I'm not so fond of the "tax the shit out of it" approach. The goal of groups like NORML isn't to JUST legalize the use of cannabis. It should be treated as any consumer good. If i choose to enjoy my porch differently than my neighbor, why should i have to support the war more?

Decriminalizing marijuana - what say you? (Drugs Talk Post)

laura says...

actually, Mg, the most people this would help would be everyone because if it were legal the gov could collect taxes on it and benefit from its many many uses instead of spending billions of dollars fighting its use. Look it up. Even George Washington (yes, our first president) was a grower/user. He writes about it in his diaries. I know, it's old news to some, but everyone should know it:

Dead or not and agree with his views or not he was a smart as hell man and accomplished a lot in life, though upvote for the last comment anyway. I like it when someone can come back and say oops.

Assuming the planet 420 means what the obvious connection would indicate you've got more in common with the man than most would think. Google the terms Mr X and Sagan and see what you find. One of his wives was in the leadership of NORML and he was hardly hostile to the area himself, just not real public about it given how much he worked for the government.

Judge Orders Police To Return Marijuana To Couple

pho3n1x says...

SUMMARY: Fifty-four percent of voters approved Amendment 20 on November 7, 2000, which amends the state’s constitution to recognize the medical use of marijuana. The law took effect on June 1, 2001. It removes state-level criminal penalties on the use, possession and cultivation of marijuana by patients who possess written documentation from their physician affirming that he or she suffers from a debilitating condition and advising that they "might benefit from the medical use of marijuana." (Patients must possess this documentation prior to an arrest.) Patients diagnosed with the following illnesses are afforded legal protection under this act: cachexia; cancer; chronic pain; chronic nervous system disorders; epilepsy and other disorders characterized by seizures; glaucoma; HIV or AIDS; multiple sclerosis and other disorders characterized by muscle spasticity; and nausea. Other conditions are subject to approval by the Colorado Board of Health. Patients (or their primary caregivers) may legally possess no more than two ounces of usable marijuana, and may cultivate no more than six marijuana plants. The law establishes a confidential state-run patient registry that issues identification cards to qualifying patients. Patients who do not join the registry or possess greater amounts of marijuana than allowed by law may argue the "affirmative defense of medical necessity" if they are arrested on marijuana charges.

the actual amendment can be found here.

they bypassed the 6 plant limit by far, but they can still argue that since they are a major hub provider, their needs extend to the "affirmative defense of medical necessity".

a news story about it can be found here.
there's an issue with the way the warrant was carried out, so they may win even if the state appeals.

the big issue is that if this goes to a federal level, it's still illegal to possess or distribute marijuana in any amount, regardless of state laws regarding decriminalization.

How did marijuana become so demonized as to become a Schedule I substance?
