Samantha Bee, Full Frontal - Voter Suppression

bobknight33 says...

So this boils down to a discrimination of minorities.

So glad of you to be their champion. That you need to look down and these class of citizen that you must intervene.

I think higher of minorities. They are my equal. I don't look down in pity as you do. I believe minorities can find a way to obtain an ID. Its not that hard or expensive.

I'll ignore your un-intentional racism and chalk it up to you being miss informed by main stream media. No hard feelings, newt. Your are not alone.

Republicans want ID laws so only AMERICANS vote. Democrats do not want ID laws. Hence to allow ILLEGALS to vote. Democrats don't care about minorities, just votes.

Exploring Man of Steel

ChaosEngine says...

Yeah, so halfway through and he's just finished the bit about Sucker Punch. Gonna have to stop you there, buddy. I *have* seen Sucker Punch along with all of Snyders other movies (except the owl thing).

He's a technically gifted director, but he's at his best when he's adapting material (300, Dawn of the Dead). His Watchmen was a solid adaptation of the source material, but it completely missed the point of the original (which was to highlight the strengths of comics as a medium). Stripped of all it's little nuances, Watchmen is a decent if unremarkable superhero movie, whereas the comic is a work of genuine literary innovation.

As for the rest of the video, if you have to make a video like this is explain why the movie is not bad, then clearly the movie failed to connect with it's intended audience. Even if there is an explanation for each of those story points (and his dads death is still retarded), it doesn't matter. Taken as a whole the movie just feels wrong. And frankly, by the end, I was bored. I had no investment in any of the characters.

And the final comment is utter bollocks. Yeah, Superman's been an asshole in the comics. Hell, I've never even really been a fan of Superman (stories involving an indestructible being with near god like strength aren't that interesting). But you've just spent 15 minutes explaining why it's a good movie despite those previous attributes, so I can't respond with my (equally subjective) opinion?

This is a pretty good summary

A Pop Culture Nostalgia Trip to the Year 1986

SDGundamX says...

Pretty sure it was Highlander (the movie version). Though personally I loved the TV version if only for the rockin' Queen opening theme song:

I am immortal. I have inside me blood of kings. I have no rival, no man can be my equal...

EDIT: Turns out it was in the movie version too, though somehow I don't remember it.

Was that Braveheart movie clip? If so, then that wasn't in 1986!

To add to the comment I added on that post, I've always known who he was because the likes of The Goodies would make fun of him (and Sir David Attenborough, and the likes). He's a fairly well-known astronomer, and a slightly less well-known xylophone player, who has played (in 1981) for the Queen in a Royal variety performance.

I don't think I've ever seen him without his monocle.

What does feminism mean? (User Poll by MycroftHomlz)

blankfist says...

I believe in equality for all. Unconditionally.

Whenever there is a deficiency or surplus in one group versus another, there is resentment. When one group is considered a lower class citizen than another, this obviously brings about separatism and disdain (think slave ownership). I also believe the way to fix it isn't to give the group with the deficiency more rights in order to counteract the unbalance, because that breeds more separatism and disdain (think affirmative action).

Equality is probably unattainable because of human nature. But, I still believe in it. I may make jokes about women, but I think they're my equal... but better than me at having babies.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

thinker247 says...

In your scenario, pornography is a scapegoat for something deeper. If a healthy relationship doesn't already have porn involved, then bringing it in only confirms that the relationship was already in trouble. There is no possible way for pornography to ruin a healthy relationship; it can only deepen a divide that was already introduced.

The first time I saw a pornographic movie, I was 12 years old. And you know what? I didn't have a God-given sick feeling. I had a God-given erection.

And I'm really tired of hearing how porn changes the way different sexes view each other. When I was a child my mother taught me to respect women, and to treat them as equals. This was before I ever saw pornography.

I've now been viewing porn for 15 years, and I've seen nearly everything imaginable...and some things unimaginable. But my view of women outside that fantasy world has not changed. I still respect women. I open the door for them, I pull out the chair for them. And above all, I treat them as my equal, as is proper.

I am smart enough to separate the world of pornography from the world that surrounds me, because I understand the distinction between images on a screen and the wonderful women that I have met through the years. I will continue watching porn as long as it suits me, and I will never blur the line between fiction and reality.

>> ^gorgonheap:
Pornography is ultimately deconstructive to healthy relationships. Just about any marriage councilor will confirm this. It degrades those involved with it. Some may disagree with it that but everyone should remember the sick feeling that accompanys the first few time one sees pornography. That's , in my opinion, a God given instinct to turn away from the filth.
Yes porn is attractive, especially to the male psyche. But it's incredibly damaging to ones relationships and how they view members of the opposite sex.

Dita Von Teese New Orleans Burlesque StripTease Performance

calvados says...

Hear ye, hear ye -- I wrote to Ms. von Teese's webmaster to invite the lady herself to join the discussion (a long shot, I know) and got this response:

Here is an excerpt from one of many interviews Dita has done and has been asked about the feminist issue. Se has no interest in reading online opinions of people regarding what she does. It's an age old argument, no one ever wins it!

Some feminists would say it imprisons women, would you agree?
This is always such a boring argument, and it doesn't have much merit considering that in fact, the majority of my fans are women. Over 80 percent of my website members are women. My fan letters come from women that are happy to embrace the spirit of glamour and sensuality, and to comsider an alternative form of sexy. And I understand that feminism is about equality and the right to choose. When you tell someone like me that I shouldn't be allowed to do what I love, because it hurts women, well, that's not a feminist ideal, is it, because then I'm not free, and I lose my equality. And also, when they make mainstream films, you know, the bigwigs and lawyers work out what showing the lead actress's tits are worth, her ass is worth, etc, etc ... they put dollar amounts on everything. How is this different? Should all nudity in film be censored if it's a woman? The feminist argument has no limits and therefore, I say it has no true merit. And above all the feminist arguments, I care only about preserving the age-old art of the showgirl.
