Police perform illegal house-to-house raids in Boston
I understand what you're saying, and by "normal" I mean non federal assisted searches, where a town isn't on a total lockdown, where a suspect isn't wanted for terror activities along with several other major crimes.
As always, if anyone feels their rights were violated, it's always suggested to talk to a lawyer. But regarding a warrant for each searched house; when they know that the suspect is in the vicinity, time is of the essence. As to the situation when something like this is allowed or not, it's written in the law books. Sure, it can be argued for or against this action, but when it comes to a circumstance like this, where the known suspect is in the area, possibly in a house. Waiting, even for a few minutes for each warrant to come through (I'm sure there were well over a few hundred houses in the area being searched) could mean lives.
I'm willing to bet that, if they did do the warrants, and the suspect did enter a house, injuring or killing the residents, everyone would be on the authorities for "waiting". They can't win either way. And I must stress, that I understand where you and many others are saying about over-reaching of authorities into civilian rights, but in this case, I feel it's 100% justified and they made the right call. And I'm sure that if there were any court cases brought out from any of this (which I highly highly highly doubt), they'll get dismissed.
My "normal " and your "normal" or what the police say is "normal" could be worlds apart, and that is part of the problem. I'm trying to look down the road and the possible precedents it sets for these type of police actions in the future. Also I dont know why warrants couldnt have been obtained for the houses being searched. I assume under the circumstances it would have been easy to do.
I fear the police having discretion to make these type of calls as I am distrustful of law enforcement and would rather have the rules they operate under more well defined.
Police perform illegal house-to-house raids in Boston
there's a key word in my explanation (which the definition is posted in another comment); Under exigent circumstances, meaning using the excuse of "oh.. we're just looking for someone" isn't considered under that label. Also, probable cause can be used in a search without a warrant (i.e. shots reported in a building etc..).
Secondly, the entire city of Boston was on lockdown under a Public Safety measure (no martial law was called at the time), but national guard was patrolling the search area and aiding local enforcement. Anyone found on the streets walking around was instantly stopped and carded for info.
Again, the searches were not unwarranted and they were not illegal. They only searched the houses in the search area, they proceeded with by the book maneuvers. No one was mishandled in the searches from what I see in that video or any other account.
As I said, "We're scared" or in other words 'exigent circumstances' are not legitimate reasons for suspension of civil rights. If you believe a 'manhunt' makes it legal for unwarranted search and seizures then I ask you, when is it NOT legal for them to enter your home without a warrant? There is ALWAYS a 'manhunt' in operation, technically every person with a warrant out is a 'manhunt in progress'. Your suggestion leaves no conclusion except you believe we have already given up the right protecting us from unwarranted search and seizure in our own homes. I disagree with that assertion, and suggest that during these types of extreme circumstances are exactly the times when it is imperative to exercise your rights, not capitulate and allow them to simply strip those rights from you or ignore them without consequence.
If they were in pursuit of a suspect and KNEW he was on or had traveled through the property, that's another story, but that's not the case here.
I did not hear that martial law had been implemented...there may be some validity to that argument, I'm less sure about that circumstance.
Still I suggest that rights only exist if they can be used at ALL times, not just when it's convenient for the government to allow them.
VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)
This isn't really a bug, but if any other users are running "lockdown-mode" Firefox like me (AdBlock Plus, Element Hiding Helper, NoScript, Cookie Monster, *and* RequestPolicy) and you don't see the comments section on any video pages, try allowing googleapis.com in both NoScript and RequestPolicy.
Old version of the page would load comments just fine with googleapis.com blocked in RequestPolicy, but it disappeared for me after the update until I made that change.
That combination of plugins for Firefox is a great way to have a whole lot of control over how much extra cruft a page can serve up to you, but I must admit it makes any first visit to a new site or domain a real bitch. Sometimes I just give up and fire up Chrome.

Cruel, unusual punishment of WikiLeaker, Bradley Manning
Thank you for speaking politely and to the point skinnydaddy. As someone who both fought for this country and knows directly how prisoners are treated, please let me explain my observations.
Manning is being treated vastly different than every other prisoner. High profile inmates, those with no violent issues or issues of self-harm, are taken to a single celled unit (Usually called a lockdown unit, or in the past, called "the hole.") However, those inmates can use the phone, sleep with pillows and blankets, set up video-visitation with family, etc. In fact, they must be given these opportunities (Example, Manning, Parris Hilton, or the POS who smashed a baby's head into the shower and would otherwise die in regular population.)
Now, suicidal inmates are different but the law covers them too. Otherwise, every inmate a Correctional Officer or military officer did not like would be deemed "suicidal." The inmate is usually placed on observation by a Supervisor or certified Medical Staff. Unless obvious signs exist (Trying to slash his wrists for example) the inmate must be regularly evaluated and every reasonable attempt to correct his self-harming behavior must be given. This includes prescribed medications. Notes must be constantly maintained as to why this inmate is where he is. This helps free up 1-Lawsuits, and 2-Man power. Each inmate on Observation takes more resources than, I estimate, 20 regular inmates.
Unfortunately, I would like to agree with you--so this issue could become a non-issue. Sadly, I cannot. Manning means nothing to me--but the bigger picture does. At first Gitmo was spoken about as being fine because it did not apply to citizens. Then people say Manning, a citizen, is fine because he is military. When you embolden to Government to take from its people, or others, you embolden them to take from everyone!
After Manning, it will be some new "classification" of people the government seeks to punish... It is a slippery slope.
Store Riots for Crap No One Really Needs
>> ^mgittle:
I'm going to open a store. Then on Black Friday, I'm going to offer CRAZY GOOD deals to get hysterical people to line up. When I open my doors and everyone rushes in, that's when I reveal that the entire store is really a rocket ship that launches and flies directly into the sun.
I approve....
Another, slighly more possible solution... Large warehouse type store... Open doors remotely and.... store is completely empty.... no employees, shelves or anything, just 4 steel walls..... close gate behind everyone and don't open it until every other BF sale is over....
For added fun, hide 1 80" HDTV in the store for $10... Sell live feed on Internet and make money back....
Anyhow, I blame the stores for a lot of this as well... Sure, the first time it happened, who could know, but by now it should be expected... Only let 20 people in at a time.. Have police in riot gear with gas standing by... Any madness, lockdown store and end sale....

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Oh yeah, that's true. I thought you were talking about a software app lockdown a la the iPhone.
Apple tried licensing the OS in the 90s and it failed pretty hard. Most Macheads would say that the reason Macs "just work" is because the software and hardware is so well matched. Windows has to support so many configurations, drivers and computer types that it's a jack of all trades - master of none.
In reply to this comment by xxovercastxx:
Apple makes Apple computers with Apple operating systems that only run on Apple-approved hardware. It's a DMCA violation to attempt to work around this. Microsoft dreams of this kind of control over their platform, but if they even think too long about ways to do it, someone drags them into court.
I compare Macs to appliances. You would not buy a DVD player and consider rewriting the firmware; a Mac and its OS are no less unified. That's not a critique on their capabilities, it's just to say that it's all one package.
In reply to this comment by dag:
Well, now that's just a ridiculous statement. How are Macs any more an "application console" than a Windows PC?
In reply to this comment by xxovercastxx:
The debacle that is the App Store is obviously far worse, but even on their desktop systems they still have unparalleled control over the platform. A Mac is more of an application console than a computer.
There are pluses and minuses to that, of course, but that's how I sees it.
Chris Wallace's Hard-Hitting Questions for Rush Limbaugh
Actually, Mr. Obama gets many hard questions asked all the time.
If at all, they emanate from FOX. And his flip, telepromptered responses and Chicago-style bashing of anyone who dares question him aren't what I would call insightful answers.
During any week, he has to figure out, how to solve many of the problems left over from the Republican's failed attempt at governing.
The Bush Excuse Machine expired on Jan 20, 2009. All Obama has done is take the worst of Bush and accelerated it, mainly on spending.
Maybe if Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney weren't dithering around in Iraq and Afghanistan, we chould have had those issues cleared up before last November.
Iraq is a success and only liberal ostriches deny it. Afghanistan? If Obama makes up his mind either way I'll be shocked.
Or stopped dithering around, and solved the economic problems we had and contiune to see. Maybe worked alittle on OUR COUNTRY, and not 'play' rulers of another land (like Iraq).
The Iraqis will soon be on their own. Meanwhile over here, the less government interferes the faster the economy will revive. Obama knows this even as his ideology opposes it.
You want to level serious questions towards Mr. Obama? Fine. Maybe sure you level the same amount of questions (and the intensity) towards the GOP. You can't do it, and everyone knows it.
I can criticize the GOP all day in defense of conservatism/libertarianism, but that's not what we want to hear at liberalsift.
So, what are the serious questions you have, that haven't been answered? You might try listening to the guy, instead of spewing irrelavent rumbish out of your mouth when he talks.
Yeah, that's the same way I feel when liberals bash Rush. They've never heard him except in soundbites from the MSM!
I know alot about Mr. Obama. Unlike you, I do R-E-S-E-A-R-C-H.
How does he plan to tax America into prosperity? If he can "cut fraud and waste" from Medicare to help pay for his socialized medicine scheme, why hasn't he done it already? Why are his college papers on lockdown? Could they be filled with anti-American rhetoric?
Allow me to simplify your Obama studies: he has no idea what he's doing.
G20 Pittsburgh Protests - Students Trapped and Attacked
Alright, people. One of my best friends goes to the University of Pittsburgh and he was in the middle of the whole thing. Most of the "protesters" were just students curious about what was going on. He wrote this about it all:
"This note is for my friends who are not in Pittsburgh and have not yet been given a fairly comprehensive version of what has been going on here. If you have been seeing my wall posts, you'll know that something bad happened in Pittsburgh, but if you want my story, here it is...
On Thursday and Friday September 24-25, the G-20 World Leader's Summit occurred in Pittsburgh. The summit involved the leaders of the United States, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The purpose of the summit is to have a forum for the major world leaders about the global economic crisis. Pittsburgh was chosen to be the location for the summit in order to highlight its economic recovery after the city's manufacturing industry collapsed about 40 years ago.
The G-20 is always met with protesters for various causes, including global warming awareness, socialism, peoples' rights in other countries, anti-free-trade, and anti-war, and anarchy. The city of Pittsburgh was required to bring in police forces from all regions of the state of Pennsylvania and other nearby states.
On the evening of the 24th, the summit began with a dinner in the Phipps Conservatory, a plant exhibition hall (really quite a nice place) just under a mile from my dorm in the borough of Oakland. The University cancelled classes after 4:00 PM that day in order to ensure that students did not have to be outside if they did not wish to. During the day of the 24th, several protests had been broken up by riot police. At about 7:00 PM a small protest began at the Schenley Plaza. (from this point on, I will be referring to locations on campus, please refer to the map I posted at:< http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs209.snc1/7620_178174626232_559501232_4081545_8066324_n.jpg>)
I went there to investigate myself at about 8:00 PM. The protest itself was fairly small, only about a hundred or so people total, with only a handful of protesters. There was some live music and dancing, courtesy of the Hare Krishna. Despite the fact that the protest was fairly small and peaceful, there were several hundred police forming a perimeter around the plaza, which is under a quarter-mile from the Conservatory. All of the Police were in riot gear, which covered any form of identification they may have had; they were also all armed with lethal and non-lethal weapons.
Around 9:00, I decided to return to my dorm. At 10:15, I overheard someone saying that they saw fire on Forbes Avenue. I decided to go out and investigate. At this point, the street had been flooded by curious students, and would remain that way until the police removed them. Several dumpsters had been pushed into the intersection of Forbes and Atwood by anarchist protesters. The next intersection had a overturned dumpster with flaming garbage spilled on the street. Several shop windows had been broken by a protester from California, however the media initially implicated that it had been students who were responsible.
I reached the lawn of the Pitt Union, and at about 10:45 the police began to multiply rapidly. They also brought in several scary-looking trucks with large dish-shaped things on them. This turned out to be a Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), which emits a loud, scary noise which is physically disabling within a certain radius. At 11:00 PM, the trucks began playing a pre-recorded message declaring that the people in the streets had become an "illegal gathering" and that the crowd was to disperse, or they could be subject to arrest or attack with "less lethal" weaponry (does that mean you're less dead when you get hit?)
At this, I decided to retreat to Forbes Hall. Other people were not fortunate enough to get out of there as quickly as I did, and became exposed to a hail of "OC" gas, rubber bullets, mace, LRAD blasts, and nightsticks. The University unfortunately decided to lock down the residence halls as the police approached, giving the retreating students nowhere to go to escape from the police. One of my friends was arrested while holding open the doors to the Litchfield Towers residence hall lobby so that escaping students had somewhere to go. She was dragged outside of the doorway, beaten to the ground, not given any rights, held for five hours, and released without any charge as of yet.
At the time, I was unaware of this, but I watched the police advance through the lower campus (residential area, mainly between Forbes and Fifth avenues) via the live feed on the local news. When I noticed that they were three blocks away from Forbes Hall, I went to the patio on the second floor of the hall (out of reach of anyone who didn't live there or have a friend there). At about midnight, the cops were in front of the hall, still chasing a small group of protesters despite being nearly a mile from the original protest ground and being practically at the end of the campus. Without any real warning, they threw several canisters of "OC" gas onto the patio. Unknown to me at the time, several also entered the lobby and threatened to mace several students who were unable to enter the hall due to the lockdown.
OC gas is for all intents and purposes the same as tear gas. When you inhale it, your lungs and throat itch and you can't do anything but cough. If it gets in your eyes, you become partially blind and it feels like your eyes are melting. I was several feet away from a grenade and was directly exposed to it for several seconds as my fellow students and I tried to escape. I ran to my bathroom on the sixth floor and flushed my eyes and choked for five minutes. The third floor had window open out of which the students had been looking, it was filled with gas, and the students living on the third floor became refugees for several hours while it cleared.
Shortly after passing Forbes hall, the police attack ended. They left Oakland with 42 arrests (most were let go that morning), and a large number of unfairly treated, assaulted, and pissed students. The university itself has yet to make any statement regarding Thursday night, but the Mayor of Pittsburgh and Chief of Police have stated that they are "proud of how well the police handled the situation". They are apparently not fans of students either.
I will save my personal commentary and descriptions of the aftermath for another note. However, here are a few links that you will find interesting.

The videos are of varying quality and contain some harsh language and violence. These will give you an idea of what the students here experienced (I know the person being dragged away at 2:35)

Kids Sing Obama's Praises
This is the disgusting part:
Michelle Malkin is going after these kids, the teacher, and the school principal.
"The tension at B. Bernice Young Elementary School escalated to such a degree Thursday that the school was placed temporarily on lockdown after its principal received death threats over a YouTube video that showed nearly 20 children being taught songs lauding the president, though back-to-school night events continuing as planned Thursday night at the school."

Update: Got to bed at 1AM, Up at 5AM. Can't get anywhere near the area, Everything is in Lockdown to protect from looters. Can't see how far the fire made it over night. They are reporting 400 Hec. (?) Water bombers are supposed to start again by 7AM. I hpe they hit it hard so we can go home (thinking positively). Thanks for you wishes... lol, haven't eaten since breakfast yesterday...
...Just got back from Evac centre. No news to be had. Starting to see helecopters in the sky, no planes dropping water yet. Grabed a sandwich and a bottle of water at the evac center. Tried to get close enough to see something but no luck, too many road blocks....
Janeane Garofalo: Republicans Aren't Well-Adjusted
I'm not seeing much evidence from anyone here that they even know what conservatism is or represents, except what pathological 24-ruining hollyweird loons like Giraffolo spew, which in this instance is like asking a nazi to describe a Jew. The arguments from this, uh, 'actress' as well as on this sift are about as deep as, "Someone with a GOP bumpersticker cut me off on the freeway...SEE, that just PROVES what I'm saying they are so MEAN!"
Children also think adults are mean, especially when they can't get their way.
I oppose Obama's marxist policies, and right now were it McCain trying to sneak the same damned Scamulus through I'd be 100% against him too.
You really think Obama gives a damn about any of you? I'm not talking one-on-one at the town hall, I mean, do you think he respects your rights or freedom? That he's working to serve YOU? Then why is he working overtime to inflict his marxist Big Government nightmare on what what was once a free nation? Why does he think he's entitled to the money you've earned--every last penny of it if he could get it--as if your very existence is to serve his vision? The man has a distorted view of the Constitution, a questionable background, and a lockstep liberal mainstream media to back him up. I notice other than pausing to hate FOX, no one on the left has any concern about this mainstream media lockdown, the same kind as in countries with State-run media. It's shameful.
How many of you knew, before this sift started, that unemployment levels are less than those of the 1981 recession, yet Obama claims we're in a second Great Depression? No one at CNN-CBS-MSDNC will ever ask.
If, as Colbert's team of hacks claim, reality has a "liberal bias", why do most professional liberals stick to academic circles and theories that never have to be proven in the real world, or indoctrinate children via government schools, or go to Hollywood to join that fantasy groupthink? (those liberal souls in Hollywood that run the studios work VERY hard to hide all their assets from the tax man). You think Giraffolo is a kind-hearted, generous, liberal soul? I only wish we could all see her reaction when her personal assistant lets her cellphone battery die or brings her the wrong brand of spring water.
If you see nothing noble in conservative or religious values, then why should anyone see governments' seizing one citizen's property, money and livelihood and giving it to others who didn't earn it as "noble"? This has nothing to do with helping people who genuinely need it.
You'll never witness a more belligerent human than a liberal whose self-perceived "rights" have been violated, particularly the "right" never to be offended.
Hobbling Abusive Users (Sift Talk Post)
This is a great idea. The worst thing that can happen is that nothing happens - emergency lockdown.

I've been contemplating handcuffing nicolebee for a while, this enables me to do just that.
