Sen. Elizabeth Warren to Republicans: Do Your Job

noims says...

Unfortunately the democratic party also has a vested interest in keeping the two-party system, so I doubt they'll be getting rid of anything significant. The party itself has demonstrated this by its treatment of candidates like Lessig and Sanders.

The pendulum will always swing away from the governing party eventually, and that means it will always swing back to the republicans. The best you can hope for is that it would be a significantly changed republican party, as has happened in the past while (albeit in the 'wrong' direction, from my point of view).

Yes, clearly by refusing to even consider nominees, they have stated that they won't fulfil the clearly delineated constitutional duty of giving "advice and consent".
"Fuck you darkie" is not advice or consent.
Let's just hope that if they stick to their guns and do hold the nomination process (and therefore the Supreme Court's ability to function) hostage that the end result is a democratic super majority in the house and senate on top of the presidency, and at least 2 supreme court positions to fill in the next 4 years (maybe more).
If that happens, and IF (and it's a big "if") they manage to get rid of gerrymandering, citizens united, and targeted voter blocking 'regulations', we'll never have to hear about the republicans again outside history classes, because without rigging the system they can't win anywhere.

clinton and sanders clash during feb 4th democratic debates

RedSky says...

I'm glad he's bringing up campaign reform, especially since Lawrence Lessig's campaign went absolutely nowhere. Odds are still that by the general election this will all be forgotten since my guess is it will be Clinton vs. Rubio and neither will want to bring it up.

Mark Ronson: How sampling transformed music

Trancecoach says...

More than reading this article, I point you towards the commentary on this article which reads:

"This is good, but the problem with reformers who do not want to totally abolish patent and copyright is that their arguments basically amount to "the law has gone too far" (people like Khanna, Tom Bell, Alex Tabarrok, Jerry Brito, Cory Doctorow, Public Knowledge, the EFF, Lawrence Lessig, and so on). That requires an empirical claim as dubious as those of advocates of the current IP regime. The only principled case for IP reform is one that also makes the case for IP abolition."

This, although not specifically stated, this comment demonstrates a preference for rigor when it comes to justifications for any position on any issue. Rationalism allows you take a consistent position based on unchanging principles. Hermeneutics as well as other modes that deal with all issues as a matter of "preference" or bias can seem rather arbitrary and harder to defend through rational argumentation.

Sorry, I missed the part where you actually engaged in a debate.

Let's recap shall we?

You posted a blanket statement about copyright, with no supporting arguments.

I responded with some reasons why I don't think it's that simple.

And you then came back with (to use you new favourite word) an ad hominem.

At no point in this thread have you made a single point or argument, other than linking to a libertarian pamphlet.

Then to top it all off, you seem to think you have the right to tell me to "debate somewhere else".

But it's ok, I have no interest in debating with a petty child like you anyway. I'm done.

Campaign Finance Reform, Crowdfunded

erlanter says...

He supports your voice having more weight regardless the cause, be it the end of the state, following the Constitution, or whatever. Lessig is a lefty but the PAC is designed to give any influential politician, party-be-damned, incentive to fight the influence of money in politics.

When only money is heard in Washington, I'll take any hope I can get. If I'm too partisan to rally behind the cause of my own voice, there really is no reason for politicians to listen.

Campaign Finance Reform, Crowdfunded

Trancecoach says...

Another misguided attempt. There is no "democracy" possible as long as there is a state. Lessig might as well set up a fund to buy beach-front property in Arizona. He has a track record of failure, though. Whatever happened to his copyright reforms?
