F/A-18 refueling over Afghanistan

the way the transmission has a bit of a lag when they first start talking (especially at the beginning at the video) I don't see how they can understand each other sometimes.

some of the transmissions are super clear, but others are just...huh?? repeat your last...over

Unexpected Trail Turn Causes Multiple Bike Pileup

shatterdrose says...

Mostly because most people are lazy honestly lol Which is ironic when you think about it. But generally speaking, most well marked trails will warn you of sudden changes like this. Part of the IMBA trail building guide is designing courses so they flow the way the rider would expect.

Honestly, in this case it does seem like a bout of stupidity mixed in with failure to properly mark the course. It would have been product to ask a LBS about the trail before riding it, as to avoid mistakes like this, or a sudden trail condition like a washout or avalanche.

In my own personal opinion: they were riding too fast for that section. It's like when a New Yorker comes down to Florida . . . they just fly on the interstates because they can. A smart rider knows when to speed up, and more importantly, when to slow down.

With drops and banks like these, they're not ultra expert by any means, but it certainly would be good as you said to know the map.

As for riders ride close, well, it varies. On road, it's drafting. Off road, you're not going to get the same wind resistance so it mostly just becomes a skill challenge. Many riders will ride ultra close like that so they can learn each others rhythms and ride better together. So in the event they do race, they're prepared.

When I lead rides, I always know who's going to up on my wheel and who's going to lag back. The ones who lag are the ones taking lessons and notes, and the ones right on my wheel are challenging themselves to keep up. I'm a very aggressive rider and frankly, I do some seriously stupid stuff. The ones on my wheel, either make it or don't. And there's been plenty of don'ts. The ones lagging behind are the safer ones. But that's not always the case in a fast changing course. If you want to know what the trail ahead is doing, you follow a leader who knows the course. They can tell you what's about to come up, or if they do something wrong they can warn you.

But you are correct in thinking that riding close like that can really be risky if the person in front falls. It's a give/take thing. Determine the amount of risk that's acceptable and prepare for that.

I don't ride trails, but would love to one day. So I still just can't understand why bikers would not take the two cautions following;
1. Recon. Just know the map. I mean, no F1 driver (I can't say Nascar that's just a loop) or any kind of rally/track driver would just drive head-first on a track he doesn't know anything about.

2. Why ride 7-10 feet after eachother? It's not a race, seems dangerous if one guy falls and you have little time to break.
Only reason I see is that the riders after can see what the guy infront does and take notes/lesson, but that seems flawed because this second guy obviously just flew over as well, so that doesn't seem to work anyway.

Not lag, but cache. Most panels on the site are cached as to avoid the costly work of regenerating the content.

I've gone all deep in siftbot's guts and changed the cache time from 15 minutes down to 1 minute. HTH!

Correct me if I am misinterpreting what you are saying here, but in a nutshell, you believe that there is a better technology for mass distribution of energy that is being suppressed by current world leaders?

You understand how crazy that sounds?

I think the success of the Tesla electric vehicle company is proof that where current technology is lagging, there are now wealthy people who are willing to push for technological leaps, and profit nicely by doing so.

If there was a revolutionary power distribution technology, somebody would be building it and profiting by it.

Anyone who naively believes that the technology does not exist NOW to eliminate the world's network of above-ground aluminum and steel might want to re-visit their knowledge extant of history, and that of the cunts who feed us shit and keep us in the dark.

Bronze. I did a search and looked for the lowest ranked member who didn't get denied (or ignored) by the cranky bot.

It's a new feature, and the documentation is lagging behind.

I feel extremely far from bronze. I only have 17 points and Bronze takes 25. I have been here for two years so if the pace continues I won't reach bronze until February of 2014!!

Haha I feel even MORE discouraged now. At this pace I wont reach gold star until 2017...

How Turbo-Charger's are made

jonny says...

A supercharger is driven directly by the motor, whereas a turbocharger is driven by exhaust gases. So yes, a turbo requires higher revs to produce enough exhaust gas to spin the turbine - thus "boost lag".

EvilDeathBee said:

What's the difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger? Isn't it something like that the supercharger boosts power at lower revs, while a Turbo requires higher revs?

In Australia we have the Euro spec VW's, and my Golf had a 4 cylinder 1.4 litre engine with a turbocharger and a supercharger putting out 118 kilowatts (around 160 hp). Here in North America they have that 5 cylinder, 2.5 litre engine that produces 170 hp. Only 10 hp difference between a 1.4 and 2.5 litres!

Sorry, I was referring to the latency papers that @ChaosEngine posted. He mentions that their head-tracking sensor is capable of 2ms samples. That is indeed impressive for consumer level tracking. However he goes on to say that they use this "density of samples" to integrate a more accurate measure of position. In other words, they average over multiple temporal samples in order to achieve a more accurate spatial measure. However, if you do that, the samples you are using to produce a head position instantaneously is at least partially influenced by spatial information collected more than 2ms ago. When you do this too much you'll get sluggish head tracking which lags the head, and can often make people sick. However so can the alternative of low-latency though spatially noisy head tracking. That will just look jerky and spastic instead of sluggish. It's a balance, but his suggestion that they chose to average suggests that they needed to due to noise in their custom sensor. I have no doubt these guys have done a better job than previous attempts at low cost HMD systems. I just don't think they've done anything ground breaking, and even the cutting-edge technology I find unsatisfying.

luxury_pie said:

Hey dude, what do you mean by: "Then he says that they integrate over those samples to get an accurate measure"

Could you elaborate?

Australia's Gun Control Program

Starting from 1986 all new cars had to be able to run on unleaded petrol, but the actual end date for sale varied according to where you were... but around 2002 (it was pretty uncommon anyway once most cars ran on unleaded, I thought it had been phased out years earlier). Given that there is a 20 year lag between changing lead levels and behavioural changes, it should be showing up starting from 2006.

Lead based house paint hasn't been common since 1970 (source).

Seems like this kind of lag has gotten a lot worse over the years in telecom. You would think that digital switches and fiber optics would help rather than hinder. I know, you can't beat the speed of light - but there is definitely some non-speed-of-light latency happening here. It bugs me the most on news broadcasts.

Thanks for the specific example of an issue, BL. That's one part of the lag in getting things changed is people tend not to provide examples about what elements on the page are at issue.

I'm like @bareboards2 (comment above), I've had to cut back on Vs viewing time because of eyestrain. The font is bigger--and therefore better--but the dark gray on light gray (see quoted text below) is still an eye killer for an old fart like me.

VideoSift 5.0 Launch! (Sift Talk Post)

Great work! I'm still finding the changes a bit unsettling, but even good change is usually unsettling, isn't it?
My three criticisms are:
1) The 'top 15 unsifted but soon to expire' list on the side of all unsifted videos was a great way to bring attention to submissions that probably deserve it, before they disappear for ever into P-queue purgatory.
2) If someone went through the trouble of promoting a video in order to share it with the rest of us, it should have a reasonable tenure at the top of the front page. If promoted videos are taking up too much space, perhaps they can have even smaller thumbnails? Although, I think two rows of three videos would fit just fine with the current thumbnail size.
3) The lag I'm experiencing when typing and scrolling the page is maddening. Even typing this one comment has by body burning with frustration. That's not a feeling you want visitors associating with your site, because it will, consciously or subconsciously, train them to avoid VideoSift.
