Evolution's shortcoming is Intelligent Design's Downfall

leebowman says...

I know, a cheap argumentative shot. I seldom cite others to prove a point, unless I first state facts, then give a link for collaboration.

I also apologize for jumping from an argument is support of the RLN to arguments in support of ID (par. 3 - 7), two related, but separate issues.

Regarding Kirk Cameron's banana fervor, I somewhat agree. I see design inferences where most others don't, including various synergistic relationships which are generally attributed to convergent evolution, but which I sometimes attribute to design, or in the case of change over time, re-design.

Most speciation events are simply naturally occurring adaptive alterations, to adapt to a changing environment. But more radical body-plan revisions, land mammal to aquatic cetacean for example, show signs of designer input, much of which could have been 'cut-and-try', rather than 'poof' style modifications. Thus, the uncovering of intermediates, and the lengthy time periods involved.

Evolution's shortcoming is Intelligent Design's Downfall

mentality says...

What you posted does nothing to refute the crapiness of the design. Why the recurrent laryngeal nerve give off branches to the cardiac plexus is very simple: The RL nerve is a branch of the Vagus nerve, which is THE source of parasympathetic innervation to the heart. The fact that some fibers may branch off of the Vagus early with the RL nerve and then rejoin the cardiac plexus further along is hardly uprising. That does NOT explain why the nerve fibers that innervates the larynx have to make an unnecessary loop downwards around the aorta.

If there WAS an intelligent designer, he could have easily made those nerve fibers innervating the the larynx split off the Vagus higher up, where the Vagus nerve PASSES BY RIGHT NEXT TO THE LARYNX.

Trying to refute this video by quoting Gray's Anatomy is either a sad misunderstanding of basic scientific concepts or just willful ignorance. Almost as bad as Kirk Cameron and the banana.

leebowman said:

They apparently didn't know that that nerve innervates the heart and other chest organs. From Gray's Anatomy:

"As the RL nerve curves around the subclavian artery or the arch of aorta, it gives several cardiac filaments to the deep part of the cardiac plexus. As it ascends in the neck it gives off branches, more numerous on the left than on the right side, to the mucous membrane and muscular coat of the oesophagus; branches to the mucous membrane and muscular fibers of the trachea and some filaments to the inferior constrictor."

And as the lady is separating the nerve from the chest area, she is actually cutting those nerve innervations. Oh, and one more thing. The long nerve does NOTHING to weaken the neck, or the animal itself, as is seen in the following video.

Lucy TRAILER 1 (2014) - Luc Besson, Scarlett Johansson Movie

JustSaying says...

Reminds me of Avatar. I watch the first trailer and think "Oh, this looks like a good flick!" and the more I think about the story and consider it's predictability and obvious stupidity, the more it turns me off. Still haven't seen Cameron's oh so great masterpiece.
I don't care much for J.J. Abrams McGuffin fetish (red spheres anyone?) or Nolans plot holes (the Joker is apparently psychic) but at least their movies don't start to look stupid when the first trailers are out. They're becoming stupid once you saw them. And you had a good time doing it, too.
I'll always prefer the stupidity in hindsight over using 10% of my brain to roll my eyes really, really hard in advance.

I saw that related title and never watched it till now-Fantastic shit man!
That first one speaks tomes to the Colonel's whole mind-control program.

You just can't crack Harland David Sanders motherfuckers, name, rank, and suck my cock!!

What I'd really like to get outta this playlist is some dialog goin' from the dumb-ass crackers who cry racist every time they don't feel comfortable hearing the truth of their lies, who'd rather retreat into spewing their version of scripted dysfunction then using rules and enforcers and similar cunts to plan some half-assed counter-attack against an emissary of reason.

OH, on a related subject and similarly synchronistic date of death...

I don't know about "they" but I blame them by default usually.

We're okay where we are, but south west is where it's all happening. I'm in Dorset and by the harbour, we seem to be safe from these floods. But there has been sinkholes in the roads and there is a sewage pipe burst just up the road from mine.

Cameron is saying money is no object. I'm so glad because that means there will be an end to austerity, seeing as he's not concerned anymore.

Do they still attribute the current weather on your island to the "immoral activities of the gays"? If so, then there must be one hell of a party going on somewhere. Buttplugs for everyone!

Seriously though, that's some flooding you have there. Hope you're not in one of the affected areas.

Statism Is Dead ~ The Matrix As A Metaphor

kevingrr says...

I studied English and Philosophy in school and have continued reading a lot of utopian/dystopian literature since. My familiarity with economics and economic history pales in contrast, but the close relationship with subjects I am interested in has caused me to spend some time and consideration learning what I can.

That said, when I see a video like this I lump it into the same pseudo intellectual/science/news that things like Bill O'Reilly, TYT, Kirk Cameron, Creationists and bigots bring to mind.

Why did I watch this? Well I'm open to listening to legitimate and informative critiques of socioeconomic systems. If they are particularly good it can lead to all sorts of follow up questions and inquiries. I get bored while i'm "slaving" away at work so I put things on in the background...

Then there videos like this. There are very few facts throughout the entire video. The analogies used are misleading. The terrible acts and downfalls of groups, individuals, or particular ideologies are often blown out of proportion entirely. There is no nuanced investigation, no insights, nothing but a self satisfied narrator with droll delivery.

Thanks for rummaging through my videos for dead links. I'll pass on using my downvote on this video.

I suppose a fiery rant every once in a while is also more acceptable than blowing up effigies of David Cameron in one's backyard. Not sure about puppets of Iain Duncan Smith though, those might be considered appropriate kindling.

Anyway, if I was involved in any popular social media, I'd be prone to make statements that might get me into trouble at some point. Mum's the word.

By the way, later this month, I'll be in the presence of people who are already on Uncle Sam's shit list.

Well, you're in good company. I am very much the same way, in that I suppress very little so it doesn't eat away and cause stress or depression. My black heart is firmly on my sleeve

The Real News: Chris Hedges on The Pathology of the Rich

radx says...

People are starving in Greece, fascists are marching in the streets of Athens.

And given that SNAP participation went from ~26 million in January of '07 to ~39 million in January of '10 to ~47 million in January of '13, I'd say the US is getting there as well. The planned cuts to SNAP will only accelerate it further.

But everything's good in the UK though. People are not likely to starve, now that food banks are popping up everywhere and the Red Cross is distributing care packages for the first time since the end of WW2.

Besides, those likely to starve will freeze first anyway. They had ~31k of excess winter deaths last year, while this year's prognosis was going for ~35k, last I heard. Food or fuel, can't have both.

Those riots in London two years ago, they were a singular occurence. All the underlying issues have been addressed. Youth unemployment is #1 on David Cameron's list, I'm sure of it. Well, maybe #2. Privatisation of the NHS has priority after all.

I apologize for my sarcasm and my cynicism, but mass violence is not unimaginable anymore in the Old World and it's pissing me off. We are in the process of flushing an entire generation of people down the toilet. These current rates of youth unemployment are unsustainable in a democratic society. The banlieus of Paris, the boroughs of London... shit will hit the fan eventually, unless there's a radical change of policy from within the system.

The elections to the European Parliament in May next year will be an indicator. As of now, it looks as if a whole lot of (far) right wing parties will enter the stage.

Also, keep an eye on the island of bliss(ful ignorance) within Europe: Germany. We're heading straight for a grand coalition that would control ~80% of parliament, rendering all instruments at the opposition's disposal inert. Did I mention they also have the neccessary 2/3 majority to institute changes to our constitution? Fucking awesome!

Again, sorry for being a grumpy fuck, but everytime I open the paper, it's a bloody nightmare -- and that's before you take away the sugar coating.

VoodooV said:

well...things are different now. We're not physical slaves, but you can argue that we're economic slaves. Even poor people usually aren't starving. food is cheap, at least shitty food is. It's a sort of gilded cage. So it's harder to get to that tipping point of committing to a "revolution"

Always am.

And I already had a sore throat from yelling at my screen when I read the parts about expanding patents on "diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical methods for the treatment of humans or animals".

Then I saw this picture of our beloved Dave who rose from his golden throne to declare to the peasants that austerity will be made permanent, since it's such a wonderful sight to see hundreds of thousands of people at food banks.

What a day...

Okay, I'm up to speed. This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. They're in the middle of rushing through the gagging laws which would effectively stop activists and protests. They have stopped all but a very few cases of legal aid, so if you're poor you're not now entitled to justice. Cameron and co. told people last week if they're truly faced with putting food on the table or heating the house up then "Put a jumper on." And on and on and on...

They're not bothered about hiding anything anymore, that's all
