one of the many faces of racism in america

Lawdeedaw says...

"WHAT?!?
What a racist, disgusting thought.
So, you're saying all black men and women are publicly disgusting people that need their actions hidden to be employable?!?
Er Mer Gerd! Did you REALLY just write that? Do you really think that? No wonder you're defending the racist douchebag."

I am not sure how defending minorities got turned into a racist statement...first, I said that our criminal justice system forever holds records against people (Ie., when they apply for a job, benefits, etc.) I stated I disagree with that because it's racist. This is because blacks are targeted by the law to a far greater rate than whites--even doing the same crimes.

Second, this was because you said the racist's viewpoints should be held indefinitely against him. Since we could apply "crimes" against blacks, that logic is what our system uses to be racist. It should discontinue in all forms.

Third, this was all pretty crystal clear. Often you have these fits, and blame them on my lack of clarity. (Kind of like how you blame me for assuming but never consider your assumptions as possibly incorrect.) This is obviously not the case here because there is no way I reasonable said anything close to what you read. I, therefore, assume, based on your past misconstrued responses, you simply want to start this shit.

(I find it funny, when I engage Choas, he can understand when he makes mistakes in reading my posts, and he apologizes, and he rarely does it...)

6 phrases with racist origins you may have been unaware

Lawdeedaw says...

You have to tag people when you call them out. Add the @ symbol so they know. Ie., @newtboy. There.

I must remember-- never read the comments!

newtboy, she very clearly gives the current meanings of all of these terms, so she clearly understands how words have different meanings over time. How could you have missed that?

And your citationless guesses about historical Romani behavior is just straight up racism. At least gorillaman doesn't rationalize his hate.

Camel Flings Man by the Head

Lawdeedaw says...

And so should every video of animals devouring animals--but those get a pass somehow... I saw a video of a rat hiding from a cat in an ingenious manner, but the rat eventually was smelled out and grabbed and eaten. Broke my heart actually. Like damn it gave its all. But then I never cried for censorship, although I won't watch it again.

Edit added,

@hallen

Or wait, did you incorrectly think this video was condoning or making light of animal abuse? If so what on earth gave you that misinterpretation? If the people are just abusing it for religion or such shit I say I wish it broke the man's neck. But if it was for a legitimate reason (ie., an injury, food, etc.,) then that is unknown. Either way, the video was merely about the POWER of animals, not abuse.

This video is a horrible example of animal abuse.
It should banned.

Adam Ruins Vitamins!

MilkmanDan says...

I think it would be hard to find a control group of modern people who *don't* get the "proper daily amount" of most vitamins; or at least the "proper daily amount" times 7 each week. Ie., maybe there are people who live off of hot pockets and potato chips for a few days at a time, but eventually they are going to go out and eat something that coincidentally contains plenty of the vitamins to cover for the days that they were eating the modern equivalent of hardtack.

Not that it couldn't be done, and not that the results wouldn't be interesting -- maybe getting trace amounts of vitamins daily really would have better long-term health effects than getting larger amounts of vitamins every few days or once a week. But it would be *really* hard to accurately pare down a study to that single variable.

Mordhaus said:

Kind of glossed over some things. Yes, in many cases vitamin supplements are only needed if you have a poor diet or other condition interfering with your required levels. Yes, Vitamin C is not going to cure a cold.

But, there are still studies being done that show it 'might' have a long term effect on cancer if you get your minimum daily requirement. There are also studies being done on other vitamin usage for long term disease factors.

So, while you really don't want or need to overdose yourself with vitamin supplements, it doesn't hurt to make sure you are getting the proper amount daily either by eating healthy or taking a supplement to fill in what you do need.

Then again, it is the tagline that he ruins stuff, so I can see why he would leave it a bit vague for comedy.

Prominent Doctor

Emotionally manipulating commercial that I liked...

Lawdeedaw says...

No, capitalism is cynical and manipulative in general. It also promotes freedom in general, ie., the antithesis to community. Is it no wonder we bemoan the fact that kids are more into their ipads then the dinner table? But we promote that as entitled, and how dare someone tell you how to live. Etc., so forth and so on.

And btw, sleazier ads sell better than wholesome ads. So "they could have done it better" is actually only your opinion but makes very little economic sense. I used to say the same thing about Jerry Springer, then I looked at the dumbass audience that watches it...

JustSaying said:

So it's capitalism that makes grandpa manipulative and his children too wrapped up in their own daily lives to visit him?
The message this ad is sending is 'It's ok to fabricate drama to get your relatives' attention'. What the admakers want to communicate is that 'Edeka is a part of your home, your family life'. They're not really successful at it, the ad doesn't work as good as it could've. It would've been better if the children made grandpa believe that this year, again, they won't make it home for christmas but then, surpise, they show up anyways. With products bought at Edeka.
The loneliness of old age is a good theme for advertising but you have to get it right or you'll appear cynical and manipulative. Like grandpa.

Lawdeedaw says...

Then you don't know what capitalism promotes, do you? Money = not wasting time. Ie., what Edison said when he improved the light bulb...

Epigenetics: Why Inheritance Is Weirder Than We Thought

Lewis Black reads a new ex-Mormon's rant

Lawdeedaw says...

A-Where did you speak about abuse?! I told a story of abuse (My mother in law being forced to have sex with animals, beaten burned, raped, etc.) And your direct answer (to her reliance on the church DUE TO THAT ABUSE) was "c) get through it with the help of family and friends like literally millions of others have done. " Ie., her abuse CAN be gotten over in your expert opinon. I say fuck that. It cannot be gotten over more so than a physical injury like brain damage, since it started so young and destroyed her thought process in life. In a way she is a socialized feral child (In a way, but I know there are huge differences.) People like me and Newt, thankfully, didn't fully get brain-fucked and so can work on social issues.

(Irrelevant topic; did you know abuse can cause schizophrenia without genetic factors? Amazing... (Carlson 2011).)

B-It is not unreasonable when you get into a public conversation on a topic that you comment directly on.

C-Yes, tell rape victims you know their plight, I am sure they will acknowledge your lack of knowing...I mean I can understand Doctors with years and years of study. Or here is a better analogy. Pat a black man on the shoulder who's child has been shot by a racist cop and say, "I know the feeling bud."

D-If you have to explain why what you said was different than those examples, it wasn't different enough.

ChaosEngine said:

What are you talking about? I said NOTHING about abuse.

I was talking about people leaving a church, and yeah, that is something that I have experience of.

Besides, one doesn't have to have personal experience of something to comment on it. In fact, it's often helpful to be able to address an issue without the emotional baggage. There's a reason we don't allow crime victims to set the sentence of criminals, for example.

It is utterly unreasonable to ask people about their private lives in a public discussion. If they choose to volunteer that information, fine, but it's not a prerequisite to participate in a discussion.

Engineer Guy: NERF Blaster

Asmo says...

It's great how even something relatively pointless (in the grand scheme of things) like a foam dart gun can incorporate not only ingenious engineering, but also efficient and appropriate engineering (ie. robust enough to deal with kids who are breaking machines =)

Lewis Black reads a new ex-Mormon's rant

Lawdeedaw says...

@bareboards2 @ChaosEngine and @newtboy Most want a particular church, or prefer a particular church. But a very few NEED a particular church--ie., they can't live without one. Take my mother-in-law. She survived a fire that nearly killed her, was forced to have sex with animals by her abusive father, was beaten by her husband, then lost all her children to DCF and well that sums up her life. It is easy to chalk up her reliance on Jehovah's Witness' faith as her "choice," but then that is denying the biological need to be accepted and loved in a certain manner. Hers is that faith alone. Take it away and she would either A-shut down, or B-more likely kill herself.

the enslavement of humanity

Lawdeedaw says...

You say that but it is true, at least in the States for most. A landowner cannot legally rape your wife, smash the bastard baby against a rock and bury it, then murder her for knowing...so yeah, it kind of is different. But that's why I believe this "socialism", ie., protections we have enforced by the government (sometimes) have made life a little less slave-like.

artician said:

Look at the bright side: the standard of living for slaves has never been higher in the history of mankind.

Benghazi: Explained

Lawdeedaw says...

Wait...didn't he just state that Obama and Hilary were negligent (intentionally so out of lack of basic care, ie., negligent instead of malicious) and kind of go out of his way to declare their innocence...but then the Benghazi trials that were intentional (and very very legal) are simply bashed and not defended for their legality. I get why everyone would separate these two, but the common points; 1-Both are ludicrous failures of morals, 2-Both are two reasons our government is full of bullshit...

Adam Ruins Everything: Polygraph Tests

Lawdeedaw says...

It is clearly hyperbole when he says everyone believes in it then makes humor at the end countering that very same claim in the video. It is also clearly hyperbole when comedy is used in a strictly fact-based format that messes up the facts, etc. (Ie., comedy is FINE. But do it factually )

For example, the Daily Show recently was under attack for their biased coverage of the Democratic debate. How many people got the "real" journalism from them in the past? That integrity was/is so important it isn't even funny.

It is why they were so disgusted/pissed when basically Trevor Noah was sucking Hilary's dick off into his mouth. It also didn't help when he later forced a skit (intended to be funny...but was really lame...) that painted Sanders as a Spic hater (Which it really didn't do...)

Point is Adam uses a fact/truth/real history model for his audience. We expect that.

ChaosEngine said:

If this was a serious documentary or a report to congress, then yeah.

But it's just a comedy bit, so a bit of poetic licence with the hyperbole is acceptable IMO.

Besides, I really don't think it's that hyperbolic.
