STUNG by a GIANT HORNET!

newtboy says...

Isn't that always true in any situation (like cowbell)? ;-)

You can buy mantis egg clusters for your garden from most nurseries, they hatch out by the hundreds. I buy a few every year, but rarely see full sized mantises (mantes) in my garden, and never new egg clusters. I did catch one a few Octobers back before it got cold and kept it alive until spring in my window plants, but I think they normally die before it freezes outside...hornet queens hibernate underground if I remember correctly. :-(

Security Inquiry...Security Review? Not According To FBI

newtboy says...

Only if they can ignore the next 4 years and assume they'll survive them intact.
I make no such assumption, and I don't plan on extended hibernation, making either scenario horrendous.

Unboxing Hibernating Pet Tortoise

SDGundamX says...

Used to keep tortoises as pets as a kid.

One of them got a larval infection in his neck and needed surgery to lance it. The vet explained anesthesia doesn't work on tortises, so they did the next best thing--they put him in the fridge for a day, induced hibernation, and did the surgery while he was asleep. We were able to take him home the next day.

We thought he'd be freaked out by the whole thing (we never made him hibernate in the winter, just used a lamp to keep him warm), but he didn't seem any worse for the experience. Lived a long and healthy life. Eventually gave him to our neighbors' kids when my brother and I went off to college.

Bahfest 2014: Why Do Mammals Sleep?

ant says...

I used to be as a callow ant, but less when I am an old fart adult ant. Also, I don't sleep a lot/hibernate. I'll sleep forever when I am dead.

Well the easiest way to answer that is to figure out how happy you are (if we assume that ants are perfectly spherical mammals).

Dancing Bats

BicycleRepairMan says...

Ok, one more amazing bat fact: Bats in flight/hunt has a heartrate of 1000 beats a minute. Amazing, but even more amazing: during hibernation, the heartrate is 4-5 beats a minute! Beat that!

Picard gets his 3 weeks

RadHazG says...

I've probably seen every episode entirely to many times but somehow I missed the whole "GRIZZelda's" having a hibernation state. Probably because I was always laughing to hard at Picard being laying the smack down diplomatic style as is his wont.

A Frog Sitting on a Bench Like a Human

Payback says...

>> ^offsetSammy:

Very possibly a video of animal abuse. Everyone might want to reserve their comments until this is confirmed or denied, because it would make the video and comments decidedly less hilarious. <img class="smiley" src="http://cdn.videosift.com/cdm/emoticon/oops.gif">

Honestly? Probably fairly cold out, the frog is halfway to hibernating, and the photographer just "posed" it like that.
