Brass Against - Wake Up

MilkmanDan says...

FUCK YEAH!

Accomplishing the guitar solo parts with strong suits of various brass -- sax, trombone, trumpet: Awesome.

Female singer keeping the feel and style of the original (male) vocals, while also putting a unique spin on it: Awesome.

Idea, execution, production: Awesome.

That's a full-on trifecta of badass!

Russian parents made you learn Piano? Improvise!

FlowersInHisHair says...

Well, yes, a guitar can do things that a piano can't and the pitch-shifter doesn't quite achieve the right timbre but the point is that he's adapted a piano to sound like a fairly convincing facsimile of an electric guitar; the playing of the piece is secondary to that. The achievement is how much the piano now sounds like an electric guitar, given how different the instruments are. It's not a bad version of that guitar solo, it's a good version of the solo considering it's being played on an instrument that's normally unsuitable for playing it.

I mean, yeah, he's obviously a good musician and I'm guessing from some of his other videos he's a talented pianist (don't know enough about piano to judge).

But there are things you can do on a guitar (slides, bends, harmonics) that are impossible to do on a piano. That doesn't make a guitar better than a piano, just that it has different strengths.

He's (kinda) compensating for the bends using that pitch shifter, but it's a pretty crude version of a guitar bend, and there's no incorporation of the subtleties of how a guitar player changes little things like pick attack.

I am all for people reinterpreting musical pieces on a different instrument, but if you're going to do that, change it for the strengths of your instrument.

But still, upvote for the dog

I was thinking, wasn't that composition called Misirlou? It turns out that is the name of an Eastern Mediterranean folk song that is the basis of the guitar solo. Pretty awesome, check out some earlier versions.

Also I can't listen to this without thinking of how lazy and awful the black eyed peas version is. "Ahh Ahh Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhblarg"

I dedicate this song to you, eric:

You take the dog
I'll take the Galaxy 2000
You get the cat
I get the cats you don't want anymore

You take the fish
I'll take the bowl
You take the dishes
While you're at it take my soul...

But things ain't so bad
Cause i got a galaxy 2000

You get the house
I get a cheap motel room
You get a friend
But that should not matter to me anymore
You have a date he's just a friend
I can't believe that this is the end

But things aint so bad
Cause I got a Galaxy 2000
Galaxy 2000
In a Galaxy 2000
Galaxy 2000

I'm in my own galaxy...
1973

In my own galaxy

You probably would have wanted this too
But it's not air conditioned
No it's not air conditioned
No it's not air conditioned
No it's not air conditioned
It's not air conditioned

*guitar solo*

Open the trunk
All of my dirty laundry
All of my junk in the yard
And scattered out into the street
You have a thing with my old guitar
I can't believe that you took it this far

But things ain't so bad
Cause I got a Galaxy 2000
Galaxy 2000
In a Galaxy 2000
Galaxy 2000
In a galaxy 2000

Listening to that still makes me get sentimental and kinda emotional

My first intro to Skynyrd was in a movie theater when i was just a kid. I was there to see the movie Grease and they played the Lynyrd skynyrd short tribute as a trailer. It made a memorable impression, as at the end, it said that they died in a plane crash. https://youtu.be/IbfrL8uH0Z4

In seventh grade(private christian school) some kids convinced the school to let them play a christian 'Skynyrd' song (Freebird) at Wednesdays chapel we all had to intend on a weekly basis. They changed a few lyrics to make it god friendly then rocked a 15 minute guitar solo. It was hilarious and pretty awesome.

Just last week i went to see 'Book of Mormon" in San Francisco and after the show as we were filing out someone yelled FREEBIRD as if there was gonna be an encore. All us older people smiled.

Today, some eight months after the fact, I noticed that someone uploaded a fairly high quality version of one of my all time favorite videos.

Nearly twenty years of dependence on a VHS rip have finally come to an end.

This is amazing and awesome and she is very skilled but she doesn't exude that she cares about any of the notes she is playing! I know she is only 15 but I'd like to see some guitar solo scrunchy faces in there!
