Gigantic Gollum Installation - Wellington Airport

EMPIRE says...

it's nice to see New Zealand fully embrace the lord of the rings theme. I just wish they would get the money and actually build a full size, theme park. The shire they built for this new movie is supposed to be left in place for people to visit it. Now just upgrade it

If you build it... we will come....

edit: and that gollum sculpture looks amazing, specially considering its size.

Drunk Guy Doing Really Good Impressions

Hrm didn't think the Attenborough was close at all actually, but the fact he could still do it while reciting a verse was top notch. I liked the Gollum the best, it gave me the chills.

Agreed, what he lacked in perfection, he made up for with improvisation. Even a BADLY done David Attenborough Hip-Hop recital is a bloody good idea.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer #1

...We all knew he was going to get to the mountain - why write about it forever? And then I thought, well, not only do we know he's going to get to the mountain, we also know he's going to struggle with gollum and then overcome and throw the thing in the mountain. I was probably too young when I first read it (like 11 or so), but I just skipped to the end, only to find that (from distant memory) there are several chapters after he throws the ring in to tie things up. Several chapters! Ugh...

But the book isn't about Frodo throwing the ring into the mountain. It's about the change of religions and a new mythology overtaking the old. Tolkien was a christian, but I think he was sad to see how previous ages of the world lost their power and disappeared for all time.

Sometimes I forget how alone I am in not getting into LOTR. I actually used to read a lot of fantasy, but stopped in my mid-teens. I really just find LOTR very self-indulgent. I had the same experience with the films that I had with the books - I got halfway through the second one (of three - someone mentioned six books above?) and just thought "fuck it, this is taking far too long". We all knew he was going to get to the mountain - why write about it forever? And then I thought, well, not only do we know he's going to get to the mountain, we also know he's going to struggle with gollum and then overcome and throw the thing in the mountain. Tolkein to me is the Stanley Kubrik of fiction books - to fans he's untouchable; to the few of us who aren't into it, he's long-winded and self-indulgent.

People are going to throw things at me for saying this, but he could have written a much better story in two books than three.

I am free all day Wednesday and Friday.

7:30 is 5:30 for me -- so any day also works. I can take my laptop into my warm cozy bed and watch comfortably.

I am blessed with the ability to sleep anywhere, anytime, so waking up early is not a big deal.

This is exciting!

Wesley James is turning out to be one rather unattractive baby -- long, skinny, looks like a grumpy old man. Luckily, he looks exactly like his grandfather did at the same age. And granddad grew up to be normal looking.

But I really liked your first rendition -- this isn't a portrait, it's an idea. If we tried to get long skinny actual Wesley James on his feet, he'd look like gollum. I don't think his parents would enjoy that.

Cool!

Ok! I think I'm ready now : Sorry for the delay. I'm around weekdays after work 7:30am until latest noon (CST) Or I can try to get up early for the evenings if you prefer then. I can stream while drawing and you can tell me if/when I'm on the right track!

let me know what day(s) might be good for you!

IIRC, LOTR did win some oscars tho.
But i know exactly what you're saying, character actors never get oscar love

Definitely got best movie, maybe even best director, but I do think his performance was out of this world. Not that that makes any difference on oscar planet

Why Eliot Spitzer was really removed from office

Whether or not the Fat Cats wanted the Gollum of Gotham gone, the fact is he and his weenie jeopardized his position on their own. A victimless crime it may have been, but this ninnyhammer was perfectly content putting men and women in jail for the same act.
Liberals suffer the same cognitive dissonance with Filth Clinton. Filth C. globetrots collecting millions for speeches on behalf of "human dignity" when he himself (literally) stripped women working for him in government jobs of theirs. This belief that the left somehow defends the weak against the strong is pure palaver.

Noo doubt clinton and spitzer are not saints. But irretrievebly damaging your nation by removing key people during the crisis because of where they put their 'weenies' is beyond retarded for most countries.
if you think telling off these boys is worth throwing away your economy you're lucky to be in the only country that wouldn't consider you insane.
China appreciates it though so at least someone's doing well..

Some Thoughts on the Ape Movie (Blog Entry by dag)

dystopianfuturetoday says...

I dug Rise of the Planet of the Apes too. Part of the reason Ceasar seemed so human was that Andy 'Gollum' Serkis did the motion capture.

I do love me some dystopian apocalyptic fiction, and had no problem cheering on the apes, but I certainly don't have a societal death wish. Quite the contrary. I think these films are more of a warning of what may happen if we don't get our collective shit together as a planet. I think these films are an exaggeration of the problems of the present - greed, selfishness, conformity, commercialization, corporatism, the devaluation of humanity, disconnectedness, environmental destruction, weapons of mass destruction, cosmetic surgery, prescription drugs, a return to base human violence, loveless sexuality, prejudice, etc. The post apocalypse is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
