The Secrets of Quantum Physics - Einstein's Nightmare

Spacedog79 says...

If you want to deleve in to it yourself, hidden variables are a good place to start picking holes in QM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_variable_theory

Also if you're interested I keep my mother's website online, which still gets interest from scientists and students researching it http://freespace.virgin.net/ch.thompson1/

I agree. It starts with "Shut up and calculate" and ends with nothing useful. I'm not sure we're moving forward with anything but mathematical masturbation at this point. It's very frustrating.

I like his comments on game sequels. As much as I LOVED Freespace 2, the lack of an ending really, REALLY sucked. Was Volition really THAT confident they'd be able to make Freespace 3? Even Decent: Freespace offered more closure, probably because they weren't sure they'd get a sequel.

Seeing that trailer made me really wish that descent: freespace carried on as a franchise.. Or, well, SOMETHING to take up its mantle.

Zooming around capitol ships in a desperate firefight just hits my nerd button so hard. But eve is just.. yeah.

Farhad I was going to post that same link... very nice. Freespace 2 was one of the most epic space games ever made, the only other that has come close (or surpassed it) was Homeworld. I may go reinstall FSO right now.

Top 10 FPS

videosiftbannedme says...

I hate lists like this because the propose to be a Top 10 FPS's of all time, but it seemed like more than 1/2 of them were released in the last 4 years. I do have to give props for them at least including Duke3D and not completely ignoring common sense.

To me the Top 10 will always have to include innovation and an evolution in not only technology but gameplay as well.

So here are at least 8 that should have/were on the list:

Doom - As fun as Wolf3D was, Doom was funner. Besides, everything exploded after Doom.

Duke3D - For adding in crazy weapons, jumping, crouching, looking up/down, jetpacks, crazy locations, etc, etc.

Quake - For kickstarting polygonal, online deathmatch multiplayer goodness.

System Shock 2 - Bioshock was just SS2 in a new, pretty wrapper. SS2 added RPG like elements, a great story, etc.

Unreal Tournament - Taking multiplayer to the next step with customization and Bot AI that was just uncanny.

Half-Life - For creating a truly immersive world; it was like playing inside a $200 million dollar blockbuster movie, as opposed to just watching it. (Still my #1 video game of all time. Where the hell is Black Mesa Source already??? )

Deus Ex - For doing emergent gameplay right. Want to go in gun's blazin'? Check. Want to go stealthy? Check. Want to hack instead? Check. Want to switch back and forth among these different elements depending on what any given situation called for? Check.

Tribes/Battlefield 1942 (tie) - For taking online multiplayer outdoors and giving gamers vehicles to drive around in. I never got a chance to get into Tribes, but I do recognize innovators when I see them. I still remember the first day I loaded Wake Island (BF1942 demo); some of the best DM memories are still linked to that day.

Now with all that said, where is my Duke/Descent/Freespace/Battlefield/WoW/Deus Ex/Half-Life hybrid I've been waiting for??

Channel Roll Call (Sift Talk Post)

>> ^joedirt:
How is happy different from cute, or meme different from viral? Or eia different from wtf. Or shortfilms and cinema. Or horrorshow and fear. Some of these are more like a playlist.

At some point we need master categories and sub-categories.
Such as main category=religion subcategory=islam (all islam are automatically enrolled as religion)
Same for politics with subcategories worldaffairs and election08

You bring up a good point, I think there are far too many channels. And if anyones submitted a video as of late really your only using a couple of channel. And, no offense intended, but with shorfilms, grindhouse, cinema, and the like it just all seems very redundant.

I think there is enough freespace in regards to inactive channel owners and open channels that we could do some clean up work on all the channels on the site.

Freespace 2 SCP - The Last Great Space Sim

Sylvester_Ink says...

Yeah, Freespace 2 is my second all-time favorite game, right behind Deus Ex.

As for pure realism, there are other games that have attempted that route, but they were nowhere near as fun. The Freespace games may not be as realistic, but they are fun to play.

Think of it this way. Star Wars, Babylon 5, Farscape, etc certainly don't have realistic space combat, yet it's a blast to watch them in action. Freespace 2 is like that.

The Shivan Solar Apocalypse (free game, details inside)

Farhad2000 says...

Descent: FreeSpace — The Great War is a space simulation computer game series developed by Volition Inc., one of the two companies (along with Outrage Entertainment) that formed when Parallax Software, the creators of Descent, split.

FreeSpace 2 takes place 32 years after the events of Descent: FreeSpace. The alliance between the Terrans and Vasudans is sealed with the foundation of the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance (GTVA). The GTVA campaign in this game is threefold.

Their first priority was in stopping the Neo-Terran Front (NTF) led by Admiral Aken Bosch. Bosch, a veteran of the Galactic Terran Intelligence (GTI), united a group of rogue Terrans under the banner of hatred of Vasudans. Initially, he threatened to destabilize the Alliance and destroy the Vasudan race.

The second priority was the discovery of the Knossos Device, a massive, ring-shaped device believed to have been constructed by the Ancients. In essence, the Knossos appeared to be an artificial portal generator. This obviously interested the Terrans, who were still searching for a way to return to their homeworld Earth.

The third, and most dangerous, was the return of the Shivans. This time, the Shivans have a fearsome new array of ships, including the SJ Sathanas that is over 5.5 kilometers in length.

It remains as the pinnacle example of Space Combat games, with an incredible plot line, story, visuals and sound. The game enjoys a cult following to this day and is freely available on torrent networks, culminating with mod releases under The FreeSpace Source Code Project.

You can get the full game yourself from Hard Light Productions legally for free. In this clip the Shivan armada forces a sun to go supernova during a decisive battle between the GTVA and Shivan forces.
