"Racist" Australian KFC Commercial
>> ^dag:
I think the fried chicken stereotype could apply to anyone of very dark complexion here in Australia. I have heard it used towards aborigines here.
In my 29 years in Australia, I have never heard the Fried Chicken thing applied to aussie aborigines.
The ad plays on the "exhuberance" of the West Indie crowd (they go off with drums and music at the cricket): he is able to settle them down with yummy product - which happens to be chicken. It's not a play on the American stereotype, the ads are too stupid to be that clever (I've seen others in the campaign).
I'm shocked people are even making the link, as that requires you to equate the Native Americans in the West Indies, with the African Americans in America. They are separate population/culture/country, so it seems you could only do such a ludicrous equation on the basis of skin colour. And Im not being trite, but that would be racist.
It's disappointing to see the Americans fire up, because it seems isolationist and self-centered to pressume this certain strain of cultural poison that is endemic in their own country, must be endemic everywhere else.
And it does seem silly to see Aussies fire up. Just because the KFC thing is not present in any meaningful way here.
Its like getting up in arms about an advert which shows a man patting a child on the head, because in parts of Korea its considered an insult ("you are lower than shit" IIRC)
Regardless, have you guys seen the other ads? they are fucking terrible. I hope the entire terrible campaign gets pulled.
Stephen Fry - Bullet Question
RE: firing bullet up vs down. They will only have the same energy and therefore speed upon impact if there is no atmosphere to slow it down. Since the bullet fired up travels through much more atmosphere than the bullet fired down, its interaction with the air removes some of it's energy as heat, and it must have less energy upon impact. This is why things have terminal velocity. There's a point where they can't go any faster through the air due to gravity alone.

Many sifters are extremists when talking about religion (Religion Talk Post)
I generally do lean in favor of practicing tolerance. One of the big problems I have is that all of those moderates who don't actually go out of their way to point fingers and tell me I'm going to hell, *DO* watch Fox News and say "Hey, I'm religious and so is Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck, and I don't need to know anything more than that, so I'm going to go out and repeat what they say and vote like they want me to vote." That mentality in moderates is what disturbs me the most. The people who just go about their day, loving their god quietly, *do* VOTE with their religion, much like the gay marriage vote in New York. And that shit hurts more than any one finger-pointing fundamentalist telling me I'm going to hell. So while I understand where you're coming from Dan, I think calling it a sort of racism may be a bit off the mark. No matter how much someone may dislike a race, their race will never change. But ignorance is correctable.
And, yes, though the majority of religious people may be angered by some of the atheist videos on this site. Some of the atheist videos that are more towards my original point (educational), have had an impact. I actually found Videosift originally because of a clip from an Austin call-in show called The Atheist Experience (the "punch yer fat head in fer Jesus" clip, which appears to be missing). Although the video was funny at the end, it was 10 mins of the most enlightening conversation about positive atheism. That one video got me to dig more for similar educational videos, and changed me from Agnostic to Atheist simply by helping me get past the idea of "it couldn't hurt to believe, just for the sake of not going to hell" concept (Pascal's Wager), which I think is a big concern for a lot of Agnostics. And there have been multiple episodes of the show where callers have expressed how the show has helped them get past certain fallacies they'd always believed, including one preacher that used to speak ill of the show in his sermons, but in his repeated viewing eventually denounced his religion and his position in the church.
So my belief is that the educational videos, like The Atheist Experience clips, are more to help enlighten the religious and semi-religious, while the mocking videos are more for us folks who are already atheists and just like a good firing-up from like-minded individuals. And as oxdottir has pointed out, you can always not watch and/or downvote.

Check your settings, my Curve 8900 caches. Yes, you have to have downloaded the info at some point, but it chaches the map just to avoid excess downloading fees.

If I fire up gmaps in a deadzone on my blackberry, it tells me there's no service and does nothing. It ought to cache the road map if not the satellite imagery.
Google Navigation = Death of GPS Makers
>> ^shole:
an annoyance for me here is how he says 'not having to' download maps onto the device is a feature and a good thing
which it is if it only meant that you didn't have to dedicate the space for it
but it also means that you have to have the internet connection in use ALL THE TIME
and the android phones in active 3G mode eat batteries like a grue
Close but not quite. It means you have to use the internet connection WHEN RUNNING GOOGLE MAPS. Personally I think it would be nice if gmaps would use cached data when no data service is available, but it doesn't. If I fire up gmaps in a deadzone on my blackberry, it tells me there's no service and does nothing. It ought to cache the road map if not the satellite imagery.
Most of these features have been available in google maps mobile for a year or more now. Turning off satellite view reduces your downloading pretty significantly and ought to keep your battery from going dead too quickly.
Got Fired Today... (Happy Talk Post)

Thanks for making a stand, how dare they equate us with youtube. It's like calling cream "milk". ;-)
Hope you land on your feet. When Jesus closes a door ...

Yet another female teacher having sex with 13 YO student
Retarded. How about, ask the kid? I admit to the *possibility* of it being "rape" but what freaking 13yr old GUY isn't fired up and ready to go half the time already? Ya can't rape the willing. No amount of "he's to young, she coerced the poor innocent!" will sound very convincing either.
Was Jesus just another sun god

I call bullshit. It makes so much more sense that we were created by an omnipresent, omnipotent force, which then tried to punish and wipe us out multiple times; and seeing as we kept surviving, decided to drop off his son, who knew would got murdered, only to rise from the dead, and ultimately go back to join his father, leaving us all to try and figure out what the hell just happened.
Makes more sense then this garbage. Just ask the talking bushes.
Hey, man, I talked to a bush once and they're not big fans of sarcasm and blasphemy. Gets em all fired up.
Rick Sanchez Exposes FOX News Coaching Tea Party Crowd
>> ^qualm:
Apparently someone at Fox News said Rick Sanchez is a "sucker." What does that mean? In one sense it's being allowed that "the joke is on you Rick Sanchez and CNN," as per Fox's usual tone of petulance, as if Fox got the best of the kerfuffle. But there's racist code in that word; Hispanics are forever being portrayed and treated as the leeches of AmericanProsperity. The people they used to call "wetbacks" are still thought of as the remoras attached to the otherwise sleek hide of good old USofA.
FOX News/The GOP is certainly not above using coded racist terms to fire up the base, but 'sucker'? Gimme a break. When you make these kinds of careless, over-reaching comments, it makes it tougher to confront actual conservative racism.
Obama is Selling You Out? (Politics Talk Post)
No, Obama isn't selling me out.
And yes, these people must be marginalized, preferably by people within their own movement who realize that incitement to violence, feeding paranoia, and stoking racial animosity can and will backfire horribly.
If you guys are so anti-war, why are you so fired up to start one on American soil, waged against your fellow Americans?
The 912 Teabagger Assault on Washington
Imagine how hard it was for Fox News to make this mass of dips look like people.
I expect they learned how to do it from CNN, MSNBC, CBS, & ABC by witnessing how they whitewashed out all the kooks from the Iraq War protests. I remember all too well how the news media was all fired up to make Cindy Sheehan look like a normal person. But it was awfully hard when every time she opened her big mouth she proved conclusively that she was absolutely, 100%, fling-her-own-poo, batcrap insane.
As to people voting for him now leaving. They need to wake up and realize the mans not a god. He wasn't gonna change the country into butterflies and rainbows with a snap of his fingers and an Alakazam.
Uh - Obama is plummeting in the polls with independants, moderates, and other 'normal' voters NOT because he isn't acting fast enough. The reason Obama has lost main street is because he was elected by people who THOUGH he was going to be a restrained, moderate, non-partisan president. But his first 9 months have shown Obama to be pretty dang close to exactly what the 'kook right' said he was... A tax & spend, big government, socialist leaning radical. That's not what America wants.
They don't want his stupid carbon tax scheme. They don't want his stupid nationalization of car companies, financial companies, and everything else he wants to take over to 'keep us safe'. They don't want his stupid attempt to re-make the AFL-CIO. They don't want his stupid plan to socialize the health care industry. Every time Obama opens his mouth he proposes yet another big government, radically leftist federal boondoggle. Obama has increased our deficit by over a trillion dollars, and he still wants to implement even MORE massive government spending. The people have had it, and that's what this protest was about.
If Obama wants to go down in history as the most popular president of all time, then he needs to scrap Cap & Trade, scrap Obamacare, scrap his union garbage, and stop trying to push big government. If he would just do that and balance the budget & pay down the deficit then he'd be popular. But he doesn't want to DO that because he's a prisoner of his leftist radical philosophy.
Lower taxes. Smaller government. Balanced budget. That's what the people want. Obama is focusing on all the wrong crap and he's paying for it in the polls.
Charlie Sheen's Video Message to President Obama
Jaace, fire up google and you'll find dozens of sites that explain the physics behind why the towers didn't tip over, why they fell mostly straight down (not completely within their footprint as many continue to repeat over and over), and why they took so long to fall. If you explore beyond only the conspiracy sites there is tons and tons of information that explains everything.
Here is the very first that came up for me, that goes into great detail through the whole event: http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/0112/Eagar/eagar-0112.html
