Elon Musk introduces the TESLA ENERGY POWERWALL

newtboy says...

I have solar now, so I'll answer.
Today, if you want battery power at home for storage of solar, wind, even micro hydro generated power, you have one real choice....lead acid batteries.
Pros (compared to lead acid)-At best, lead acids are large, unsightly, need an enclosure, need a charger, have a 1000 cycle life span, need maintenance, can't be frozen or allowed to get too hot, use acid, are expensive to dispose of, and are more expensive than this (better?) technology by almost a factor of 4. I recently replaced my battery bank of just over 1KWH for around $1200-$1400, while he's advertising 10KWH for $3500!
Cons-likely lots of 'rare earth minerals' needed, which cause massive pollution where they're refined (China), unknown rate of failure/fire, other unknown problems, and anti-renewable energy people's heads exploding trying to come up with new reasons that renewable energy sucks.

Awesome Chemistry Demonstration ...Cos FIRE!

newtboy says...

My original thought was maybe a frozen methane hydrate, it didn't behave like a pure liquid.

From http://worldoceanreview.com/en/wor-1/ocean-chemistry/climate-change-and-methane-hydrates/
-Methane hydrates belong to a group of substances called clathrates – substances in which one molecule type forms a crystal-like cage structure and encloses another type of molecule. If the cage-forming molecule is water, it is called a hydrate. If the molecule trapped in the water cage is a gas, it is a gas hydrate, in this case methane hydrate.
Methane hydrates can only form under very specific physical, chemical and geological conditions. High water pressures and low temperatures provide the best conditions for methane hydrate formation.

I dunno that I buy the liquid methane claim. Maybe in part, and on review whatever it is is clearly extremely cold, but that much of it seems like it would be incredibly dangerous to set alight. Could you dilute it with something non-reactive that has a similar boiling point? Argon?

Dammit, where are all the sift chemistry experts when we need them?

Wait a second- what's wrong with the actual Frozen?

Have you seen it? From your libelous words, it seems you haven't, but you're missing out. It's a pretty great movie, especially for being made by Disney.

Frozen - Blood Test

*promote *quality

I think this deserves quality; this is top grade sarcasm and multi-movie parody madness. To top it off, they use the absolutely awesome Robot Chicken still-frame, cut, edit, move, shoot, "animate", shoot, next-frame; which is an absolutely long process...

If it is done correctly and well, like they accomplished it here; what can I say: awesome,,, It's always quality when they combine this type of animation and the correct "skit".

BTW, it is really good that they decided to forego the deleted scene from 'Frozen' directed by Tom Six... Maybe they thought it was just too "Dutch" *shrugs*. Especially the singing parts. Just enough characters to fill, every role, necessary...

Smashing a frozen river to save man's best friend

eric3579 says...

From The Daily What:

"The 21-year old man who saved the dog is a mill worker named Ivan. After the rescue, the dog ran away, but Ivan ran into him again at a store where he was buying some vodka. He then adopted the dog whom he named Rex."

Seems the dog was homeless.
