Susie Wolff makes F1 history at the British Grand Prix

oritteropo says...

The problem is that Williams don't own the rights to the footage, so can't include it in their video.

Women generally have the advantage of being a bit smaller and lighter, and as there are a lot more young women coming up through the junior formulas, I expect it's only a matter of time before we get one racing in F1.

Susie is pretty good, and I wish her all the best, but I doubt it will be her.

Kinda disappointing we didn't actually see her drive. I know motorsport is physically demanding, but you would still imagine that a woman should be able to compete on an equal footing in an actual race.

Good luck to her, hope she actually gets a racing seat at some point.

This is a great thing, and it will really help break down the barriers to women that exist in motorsport. It was a real shame that Deputy Team Principle Claire Williams tried her best to mess up the message on Sky TV in the build up to the weekend. The Sky team had got a goalie and a goal set up by the side of the track and were getting all the drivers to try to take penalties, some of them really good others couldn't kick a ball for toffee. Claire Williams gets interviewed, the only woman there and her reply when asked to take a penalty was 'I can't do that, I'm a girl...'

Of all the people to say that. A woman in a serious role in a top level F1 team which is trying to help promote women in motorsport. Some of the male drivers asked to take a shot made excuses but just had a go, but she wasn't even prepared to do that and the reason was that she's got a vagina.

I hope Susie Wolff gave her a right good smack when she saw it.

Susie was the first woman to have track time in an f1 car during a race weekend for 22 years, and only the 6th ever, but only completed four laps due to what is being described as 'oil pressure problems'.

Pet Cat Saves Son From Dog Attack

Thumper says...

I feel bad for the kid and the dog because it's obviously neglected. However it made my day seeing a cat so defensive over its property. I would love to see an F1 Savanah go to town on an attacking dog. Seriously, I think modern breeding is going to create some awesome home defense cats.

Formula 1 Pit Stop: 1950's & Today

jubuttib says...

Would be difficult to swing that because F1 didn't have the type of organized pit stops we see today until much much later. Refueling during a race was first done in a properly calculated way in 1982 by Brabham, before that they only did it in emergency situations (barring Fangio's German Grand Prix win in 1957, where he just decided to do it mid race, but would probably have won even without it). It was again outlawed by 1984, and came back in 1994, then went away in 2010 again, so the only times in history that proper pit stops with fueling etc. have been in common use in F1 are between 1982-1984 and 1994-2009. Likewise stopping for new tyres pretty much came in with the fuel stops in 1982, because naturally they realized they could run softer tyre compounds if they only had to last half a race.

In the 50s, 60s and 70s you'd basically only see the F1 drivers pitting in if there were problems with the car, for the most part they really really wanted to avoid coming into the pits if at all possible. Exception being races like the Indy 500 which was simply too long to complete in one go.

Slightly more interesting would have been seeing a pit stop of an actual F1 race from 1950 since they would have had a different governing body and probably different rules.

Also somewhat interesting because it's weird: The 1950's clip is from the Indianapolis 500. It's only tangentially related to Formula 1. At least during some part of the history of the race, Formula 1 championship points were awarded for the Indy 500, probably because many of the F1 drivers competed in the race. Slightly more interesting would have been seeing a pit stop of an actual F1 race from 1950 since they would have had a different governing body and probably different rules.

I've only seen half the telecast... it was shown in the middle of the night, so I taped it. The part of the race I've seen, and all the reports, were excellent. This one race should have put the haters back in their box... there was plenty of racing, plenty of action, and all it needed was someone to be excluded and have an appeal pending for the final outcome and it would be exactly like the F1 of old Only better!

Actually, given that Dan Ricciardo's appeal for 2nd place from Melbourne is still outstanding, I think we can even take that.

The difference new engines make in Formula 1

Well apparently , the organisers of the Australian GP are threatening to sue because it wasn't loud enough. I remember as a kid hearing a formula 1 car in person when one did a demo lap in Dublin. The noise just blew me away, I had literally never heard anything that loud.

Personally, I think this kinda misses the point of F1. GT racing has always been more exciting because it's closer, but that's not why people watch F1. It should be about the best drivers racing the fastest cars. Yeah, the engineering is part of it. Bring back big engines, bring back ground effect, let's really see what the engineers can do.

F1 has always been as much about the technical aspect as the drivers.

And let's face it...Guitars, jet fighters, explosions.... loud things are just fucking awesome. .
