Faux News busted on Ron Paul CPAC deception

Yogi says...

>> ^quantumushroom:

Why is the left "worried" that Ron Paul is somehow being misrepresented?
You lefties would poop your pantaloons if he was elected Prez. He opposes everything you stand for minus anti-war naiveté and legalizing drugs.

Who is "The Left" anyways? I think any reasonable person should think this is silly and unfair...not some "Left" that doesn't really represent anyone.

EDIT: The real question of course is why? Fox is known for doing little things to misrepresent stories...or writing a script which they follow...all quite damning but most very subtle. This was something someone had to search for and find with the expressed desire to misrepresent a reaction...perhaps because they do not like Ron Paul. You have to wonder whether this was a couple techs with opinions or it was an editor/director, or did it come from higher up the food chain.

What interests me in this case is Fox's success with propaganda, simply driving home the questions that Obama wasn't born in this country has causes the public to shift to that way of thinking. It's an amazing accomplishment and it was done with just talking about it constantly, this was actively editing something to try and fool an audience. Now say there was an incident much like the sinking of a ship...do you think Fox's talents could drive us into a war much like the newspapers did with the Spainish American War or even World War I?

shagen454 says...

Seriously, I have smoked pot for about fifteen years. Not every day but at least several times a month. I remember once during summer when I was 18 I was called in by my boss to work a morning that I wasn't scheduled for. I was about an hour and a half from my house and reeeally high when my dad called to tell me that my boss had called. That put me right on the spot. I had to drive home. It was one of the most panic inducing experiences I've ever had. I've had similar experiences driving at night (as a kid) on a highway that were scary but only while stoned (shakiness, paranoia, etc).

I moved to a city where I have no need of a car, I like to get fucked up, alright? It was one of the major forces in moving to a city with more than adequate transit. I knew I couldn't continue on in that fashion.

Anyway, where can I get DMT? Been looking for some for years.

I say this with no hostility toward ant or geo, but maybe people who misuse their powers (intentionally or not) should be hobbled for a week or so just to drive home the point that you need to pay attention when you're doing this stuff.

I apologize for the misunderstanding. I was driving home a couple of days ago with my car windows open, and while I was slowing down for a stop sign It sounded like the person said "I am ant from videosift". While he was drop kicking his donkey. I would have liked to stop and say hello but you were coming at me quickly and wielding a shovel.

White House White Board: Tax Cuts

NetRunner says...

>> ^handmethekeysyou:

I love this idea, and I really hope they continue with it as a series. However, I take one very strong issue with this video; specifically their absolute failure in communication design. The use of circles is borderline offensive to anyone even loosely schooled in the subject.
"We got a ruler and measured out the size of the tax cut, is how big the circle is [sic]". Cool. Corresponding to what? How big the tax cut is by percentage? Dollar amount? What?

Fair, point, but it's all too rare for liberals to try to make a simple, easy to understand case for what they're doing. I don't want them to spend a lot of time talking about x and y axes when they're just trying to drive home the difference in policy priorities.

That said, I suspect it's similar to this chart, and in that one, it's the area of the circle that's proportionate to the raw number of dollars a person with the stated income would save under each proposal, compared to the baseline tax code.

>> ^blankfist:

And I like how his chart stops at 1 million. Why doesn't he show what they'd do to people who make more than 1 million? What about people who make ten million? Or 100 million? Because this is just theater.

More likely, it's because it wouldn't be fair to keep going. The Obama circles stay the same size as you go up from this point (hence the "Let the tax cuts expire on income over $250,000" thing), and the Bush circles keep getting bigger at ever-faster rates. I'm not gonna try and estimate at what income level the Bush circle would be bigger than the whole board, but I wouldn't be surprised if $10 million was close.

Rep Congressman "We're gonna balance the budget!" ok...how??

NetRunner says...

This seems to be the only way the DC press ever "challenges" Republicans anymore. Ask a simple question like "what policies will you enact if elected", press for an actual answer, and let the Repub flounder.

Good on Gregory for not letting him dodge, but it's an almost accidental thing -- Meet the Press is basically a second hour of Fox News Sunday under his stewardship.

But even Chris Wallace nails Republicans from time to time with this same "hard hitting" journalistic method. At least when someone like Chris Matthews does it, he really drives home the rank incompetence of the empty suit he's interviewing for being unable to answer the question.

Watermelon carving

kronosposeidon says...

How is your point "logically sound" when art is subjective? You don't consider it high art. Fine. You consider it tacky. Fine. But both of those are your opinions, not a statement of fact. Logic has nothing to do with arriving at these opinions, capisce? Just because you think it's naff and that it should be relegated to the buffet table doesn't mean that it's not art. Chefs routinely prepare their dishes to be pleasing to the eye as well as the palate. Many consider it an art form. You may consider it naff.

Expertise is not the issue. I made my "expert" argument in a satirical vein, merely to drive home the point that is obvious to everyone here: That you are critical of almost everything, so your opinion should be taken with a grain of salt. It means as much as someone who praises everything. Maybe you aren't aware of that. Pardon my brutal honesty.>> ^westy:

"but I still thank you for your brutal honesty. Is there any field of interest you're NOT an expert in? "
if sumone makes a piont that is logically sound then why would they have to be an exspert in something ?
allso why would you presume just because sumone voices an opinoin about something that they would concider themselfs to be an exspert , your autimatically trying to set up a confrontational situation.
If you disagree with what i have said why not say specifcaly and give a reason.

This track is a bit overused though. Sorry what does this app do? It is pretty.

Just tried playing Hit Girl Drives Home from the Kick Ass score and works well, though it's only 1 minute 42. I bet some Radiohead would work well.

Last Lecture of Randy Pausch

I was in attendance when Randy Pausch gave a dinner talk to prospective CMU Ph.D. students. It was probably the best talk I've ever seen -- driving home the point that computation is the most powerful force for changing the world in the future.

People who Appreciate a Good User Experience Will Like the iPad (Blog Entry by dag)

RedSky says...

They won't miss these added features because those primarily exposed to Apple's mass marketed products won't expect them by default. If Apple can define tablet PC to lack or not require GPS, a camera, possibly even Flash then that will define their expectations. I'm sure more are and will remain oblivious to the likes of the Archos 5G/9 which is superior to the iPad and does everything it should:

Archos 9 - $600
1.76 lbs.
1.1Ghz ATOM Z510. Runs Windows 7.
8.9", 1024 x 600 pixels resistive, LED backlight.
10.08" x 5.28" x 0.67" thick
7.4v Lithium-Polymer battery, 5 hours, removeable. 36W (12v @ 3a) power adapter.
HDD 60GB (1.8")
WiFi (802,11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR)
Microphone.
Stereo Speakers.
Headphone jack.
1.3mp Webcam,
Optical trackpoint mouse,L/R mouse buttons.
Built-in Stand, 2-positions.
USB port.
Lotus Symphony included: Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations.

iPad - Starting at $500, but $700 for that amount of hard drive space.
1.5 lbs.
1Ghz A4. Runs iPad OS 3.2.
9.7", 1024 x 768 pixels, capacitive, LED backlight, IPS, Oleophobic
9.56" x 7.47" x 0.5" thick.
25Whr Lithium-Polymer battery, 10 hours, fixed. 10W (5v @ 2a) power adapter.
16GB, 32GB, or 64GB flash memory.
WiFi (802,11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)
Microphone.
Speakers: Mono Audio.
Headphone jack.
iPad versions of iLife apps: $9.99 each (x 3).

Also I think the user utility associated with Apple's products is exaggerated. It's simplicity that they do well, and again the kind of people who are not aware of the customization they might appreciate, are missing out on and might benefit from are the same people that laud it. That and the fact that user utility feels like it's too often conflated with style. The scroll wheel on the iPod sure was a fancy marketing gimmick but having used a 5G iPod now for over a year, I would gladly get tactile controls back. There's simply no comparison, and really the only thing I can assume is Apple users who claim it's efficient have no frame of reference. The same can be said with OS X, sure it's full of stylish transitions, animations and some good features, but I'd wager especially with how familiar everyone is with Windows, it's no more of an efficient work tool. I see Jobs made a big deal about pointing out that the iPad will have a similar user interface to the iPhone. I think that drives home the point that there's nothing that immensely intuitive about Apple devices. They still must be learnt. People are simply more willing to invest time into learning to how to use an interface of a device that is more popular and they predict will be around for a longer time.

Coming back to the iPad, I still think even the average consumer is going to be pissed off by the lack of some features. It's pretty clear that they didn't just want to make a portable internet device that surpasses the iPhone in usability, they wanted to make something that clearly doesn't eat into the market share of their budget MacBook and MacBook Air. They could have loaded a desktop OS on it, but they purposely didn't. I think many will struggle with the idea that an internet device like this can't do Flash, doesn't have a USB port and can't run their favourite PC/Mac programs.

That may be it's downfall or marketing, and simplicity as you mentioned may win out. If Apple says 'revolutionary' enough, maybe they won't realise this device is bested by something that came out in October 2009.

Last Minutes with ODEN

lesserfool says...

In college I spent my evening and half the night driving home and back just for an hour with my suddenly-ill dog. I could hear her tail smacking the wall from the kitchen as soon as I spoke in the entryway. She died of natural causes a few hours after I left.
