Bitter:Sweet - Dirty Laundry

MrFisk says...

I've got a bad boy and that's alright with me
His dirty laundry is nothing that I can't keep clean
And when he needs an alibi
He can use me all night

(Oooh) What's the fun in playing it safe?
(Oooh) I think I'd rather misbehave
Your way

I'm just a bad girl, that's why we get along
Won't make excuses for anything I'm doing wrong
I'll pull the trigger in a flash
Watch out honey, step back

(Oooh) What's the use in playing it safe?
(Oooh) Wouldn't you rather misbehave?
My way

Oh baby show me the money my evil friend
Let's go to Mexico, drink margaritas in sin
I'll light a candle for good luck
Now come on baby let's...

(Oooh) What's the fun in playing it safe?
(Oooh) I think I'd rather misbehave
Our way

We're simply mad
Simply mad

The Return of Choggie (Sift Talk Post)

NetRunner has requested that I answer these question, so here goes:

# What purpose are the rules supposed to serve? Protection of the community? A declaration that the community demands adherence to some sort of basic standard of moral behavior? Decoration?

The rules are "guidelines" - we didn't call them that by accident. They are there to serve as a guide. To protect the community, yes- but also to empower it, shape it and strengthen it.

# Are the rules applicable to everyone equally, or do people with a greater degree of popularity get exempted from them?

The guidelines are applicable to everyone equally. I'll assume that you're referencing our reinstatement of Choggie here- Choggie was reinstated because a majority of the participating community indicated that this is what they want. I acted on this- mindful that Choggie did real hurt to a minority of the community and put in safeguards to ensure this hurt would be minimized. FTR our guidelines do not say that all bans are permanent forever and ever, amen. I do believe in second chances.

# Once someone has been banned for a violation of the rules, what are the criteria for pardoning them?

We don't have a constitution, and I feel that you're writing in those terms. In this particular case- the criteria was that the community indicated this was their preference, to overturn the ban, and I was agreeable to it - with the provisos included.

In the real world, a common requirement is that the criminal in question expresses remorse for their actions, and asks forgiveness. Or there's a political need to make peace (e.g. pardons for the architects of the Whiskey Rebellion, or the Confederate soldiers after the Civil War). Or it's done to cover the ass of a political crony. This case involves none of those things, so what exactly is the reasoning?

See the above answer.

# What rights do victims have? Must they constantly fight to maintain a negative popular opinion for their attackers in order to maintain justice? What about privacy? Must they air dirty laundry to constantly keep it in the minds of people, lest their abuser's transgressions be forgotten?

I would expect any grievances to be provided privately to me.

# What representation is given to people who left the community, never to return, because of the abuser's actions?

I'm not sure what you mean by representation here - or what you would expect for this.

# Is there any guarantee of protection from harassment on VideoSift at all, or is that contingent on popular vote?

Like the rest of the Internet- no there is no absolute guarantee of harassment protection for anyone. For Choggie- we have removed the tools of private harassment- any public harassment would be swiftly dealt with. Choggie knows this.

# If all rules can be waived by popular vote, what are the mechanics of how that works? Normally polls are open for 72 hours before a conclusion, why wasn't this one? Does the person making the proposition poll have the right to rescind the request (as happened with this one)? If they're binding, even when the request is controversial and ill-advised, can we make a fucking health channel already?

Guidelines may be waived by popular vote- I'll have the final say on this, but would definitely take it into strong consideration. Nothing is binding, the rules are guidelines. We are not a constitutional republic- this is a web community- a very good one.

This comes as quite a shock to me. I kinda understand that it's the nature of online communities to function as a sort of constitutional monarchy, but I guess I don't understand the social contract here, even after all this time.

So, I have some VideoSift civics questions for you, dag.

  1. What purpose are the rules supposed to serve? Protection of the community? A declaration that the community demands adherence to some sort of basic standard of moral behavior? Decoration?

  2. Are the rules applicable to everyone equally, or do people with a greater degree of popularity get exempted from them?

  3. Once someone has been banned for a violation of the rules, what are the criteria for pardoning them?

In the real world, a common requirement is that the criminal in question expresses remorse for their actions, and asks forgiveness. Or there's a political need to make peace (e.g. pardons for the architects of the Whiskey Rebellion, or the Confederate soldiers after the Civil War). Or it's done to cover the ass of a political crony. This case involves none of those things, so what exactly is the reasoning?

  4. What rights do victims have? Must they constantly fight to maintain a negative popular opinion for their attackers in order to maintain justice? What about privacy? Must they air dirty laundry to constantly keep it in the minds of people, lest their abuser's transgressions be forgotten?

  5. What representation is given to people who left the community, never to return, because of the abuser's actions?

I look forward to your answers.

Wow - I honestly didn't think this would get sifted. I submitted because I was in the Korengal June - July of '06. I was an engineer so I never left the base. When we got dropped of by Chinook there (it is inaccessible by road during the spring months due to flooding from the snow melt) it was basically just one platoon of Marines living in makeshift bunkers made out of logs. No perimeter, no nothing. We spent the months establishing the perimeter (theres a chance that the Constantina wire in one of the shots was installed by me) and setting up a reinforced barracks area. In the month or so we were there there were 6 rocket attacks and two small arms skirmishes on the base. The Chinook that left before our leaving the base took small arms fire and one of the Marines inside got hit in the shoulder. So when we got our Chinook ride out it took evasive maneuvers. It was a pretty fucking crazy ride. One of my sergeants got sick and ralphed in his dirty laundry bags because of the banks the chopper was pulling. Crazy times. Its disheartening to see that 3 years later not much has changed.

What's your first memory of rock & roll? (Rocknroll Talk Post)

Dirty Laundry by Don Henley. I was brought up totally sans rock music, and this was the first one I taped off the radio and got really hooked on, listening to it repeatedly on the sly.

VideoSift 4.0 Roundtable (Sift Talk Post)

- nested comments, no
- siftquisitions and hobbiting, no!
they air out everyones dirty laundry in public forum, cause unneeded drama and choas, and make everyone look like asses when they get all emotionally invested in a situation they know nothing about and only exists online. example: usesprozacs siftquisition (i dont think shes been back since), and my own siftquisition which in reality was nothing more than a social experiment and thinker and i making a public mockery of the entire feature. and let me tell you, it was exhausting.

- hiding invocation requests and siftbots reponse to them, yes (maybe just the person who performed such invocation could see some alert to let them know it worked?)
- changes to the pq, no
- dumping the pq of long time inactive users, probably, but we need stringent guidelines
- revisions to the channels!!!!! the channel feature is cluttered and many are cumbersome. can we vote to eliminate some channels? if a member wants to recreate and maintain said channel when they hit 250+ fantastic. or open up abandoned channels to 100+ members? and keep the reserve on creating your own channel for diamonds?

Siftquisition of feature Siftquisition (User Poll by Ornthoron)

Sarzy says...

Damn right you'll listen to the monkey!

Okay, let me briefly make my case yet again to get this thread back on track. Why do we need Siftquisitions? The only thing they really accomplish is to serve as a public shaming for the offender before a punishment is imposed. Nine out of ten times, a more discrete form of justice would serve both the community and the offender much better. Siftquisitions just make this place harsher and uglier.

I know the argument is made that "we don't want this site to become a dictatorship!" Really? Can we hold an election and replace Dag and Lucky as the site's administrators? I don't think so (nor would we want to). So it is a dictatorship.

But anyway, why does the entire community need to get involved in something as cut-and-dried (and as personal) as something like abusive comments left on someone's profile page? Why should that kind of dirty laundry get aired out for the whole world to see? It just causes embarrassment and turns something small and personal into something far bigger than it needs to be. The same goes for pretty much all Siftquisitions.

Where are all the good sift able Democrat bashing videos in the first place?
I think 8 years of disastrous Republican rule might have something to do with it...

Oh they exist.. but most never get "published" and they get shuffled under the carpet like they never existed. While I think it's great that the exposure of the unconstitutional neocon activities gets published, it seems that the dems on the site will refuse to vote up any vids that expose any of the dirty laundry of their party as well. This is called playing favorites.. sticking up for your side even when they are out of line. It's unethical.

I find it tough to get many vids published because I'm in the center. It alienates me from those of you that play favorites. It allows me to give critical analysis of both sides of this madness. All the while watching the media play on the mass psycological factor of your party loyalties.

If you are to have an anti-mccain channel then in all fairness there should also be an anti-obama channel.. why don't we just call it an anti-CFR candidate channel, hmmmm? now there's a thought.

No, we're not mentioned, but I just thought it was interesting - as that's how SiftTalk works - we tend to keep our dirty laundry and messy stuff in the back.

BTW anyone know what a "blind mullet" is?

Maybe we are just attracted to the smell of your dirty laundry. Seriously though, it obviously bothers you quite a bit that someone would have the nerve to downvote 9 of your submissions in a week, but to reiterate what has already been said: a.) calling someone out on the blog over a molehill is not cool, b.) dc already responded, c.) the earth will continue to orbit the sun, in spite of it all.

Move on.
