Why Radio & Music Industry Sucks Nowadays

enoch says...

dick dale?
everyone knows dick dale!
if you ever saw the movie "pulp fiction"..
you have heard dick dale.
what a great short vid,
i could not agree more..
i cant stand the vanilla,cookie-cutter sameness of most of commercial music.
i stopped paying attention to that fluff in the early 90's,
and being such an avid music fan, finding new and interesting music was more of a co-operative search.
people would share what they found, and those people would pass it on.
with the internet, that form of discovery is that much easier.
i have found more fantastic music on the internet than any corporate outlet could ever supply.
sift members have introduced me to some fantastic music.
i really dont know whats going to happen to corporate music,
and i dont much care.
music is an experience to be shared,
and there is so much great music to be found.
the best way is to share with each other.
let the media conglomerates choke on their own greed.
they can keep brittany spears.
im not interested.

Why Radio & Music Industry Sucks Nowadays

You don't know Dick Dale? Seriously? That's kinda sad.

Aside from that, Music has existed for no one knows how long. Major movements traveled from country to country in a matter of months, or even weeks, during the middle ages. We'll survive without the record industry.

A possible problem I see for the future is that distribution companies(the guys that allow small time music acts to put their stuff on the web) like to make their own formats, to keep better control over their medias. Without larger figureheads standing in the middle of that, we're going to see some difficult battles over the most used format. And to the victors of those battles, go the new keys to the same broken down kingdom...

Grimm says...

"and that's the reason why the system hates Dick Dale"

I think what he's saying is there are two ways to do it. Signing with a major is going to give you more instant gratification. Big money up front, picture on the cover of a magazine or in a magazine, your music distributed far and wide but it's at a cost of losing some control and full ownership of your music etc..

The other way is to bust your hump and do it all on your own terms. Take a few years to build up a following and by that he doesn't mean throw some free MP3's on your MySpace page, he means get yourself booked in clubs and put yourself out there and bust your ass marketing yourself.

You'll be happier with 100% of a small pie then you will be with 2% of a much bigger pie is what I think he is saying.

volumptuous says...

Dick Dale is speaking from the perspective of not only one of the worlds great guitarists and musicians, not only from the perspective of someone who basically started the genre of surf guitar music, but also from a highly respected infamous artist.

Most people are not and will never be where he is.

I am glad I'm signed to a major. They have the PR and distribution tentacles that wrap around the globe, something I could NEVER do on my own. I am now on Amazon (in every country), iTunes, Bleep, Napster, Rhapsody, Starbucks, and every other major music outlet around the world. Again, something that almost noone could DIY.

Giving away a bunch of mp3's on myspace (or your own website which noone will ever look at) is a fools errand. It's just more noise to an ever-expanding signal. The trick is breaking through that fuzz, and getting some attention which is nearly impossible to do on your own. There are exceptions to this rule, (and I'm sure someone will say, "oh yeah, but The______Band made it just on their MySpace page!!) ... but it's pretty much "The Rule".

Bands have always given away their music for free. We call them "Demos".

Jewish Surf Rock - Hava Nagila / Miserlou

poolcleaner says...

Ok, so here's the funny thing - about 8 years ago, I was in a college film class analyzing Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. It was any interesting class: we'd watch a section of the movie, then pause to discuss the scene/dialogue; and, after Miserlou plays, this guy (whom we all learned to dislike) chimes in that it's Jewish novelty music. Our instructor, as well as a number of students rebut that it's a Dick Dale surf song. The guy adamantly holds to his original statement, and we're all annoyed.

I guess he was right all along.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Dick Dale Do Pipeline

kronosposeidon says...

I'm in 'HATER MODE' right now, so even though Dick Dale and Stevie Ray are two fantabulous guitar players, I'm going to say they're using to much gain. Is that "hater" enough? This is my first attempt at at joining the Halls of Hatred, so any any hater feedback would be greatly appreciated.
