Ricky Gervais' Guilty Pleasures

I struggled with The Office, mainly because I've worked for people very much like David Brent and couldn't see the funny side. But I've just started watching his latest series Derek and it's completely changed my view of him. It's amazingly well written. He manages to get The most immature dick jokes in there, racist or obscene jokes, physical comedy, clowning, subtle puns and wordplay but all in a plot that is one of the most touching and heartfelt I've seen for a long time, comedy or not.

Great british comedy, like Only Fools and Horses, or Open All Hours, are all about compassion and love. They're funny, but the characters are so well written you really care for them. The writers of Only Fools and Horses managed to write an episode about one of the main characters having a miscarriage. There were jokes throughout the hospital scenes but somehow they didn't stop it being truly tragic, they didn't trivialise it. It was devastating, but funny at the same time.

I'm not sure Derek is quite that level, but it's getting there. It's made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. He's undoubtedly a very clever man and going up in my estimations all the time

He thinks he's funnier than I do. Sounds more intelligent here than I would have given him credit before.

Behind the scenes of Peep Show [Part I]

So true. It's car-crash comedy, in that David Brent vein of truth in profound ugliness. It's a crime there are only six episodes a season. >> ^EvilDeathBee:

Took me a while to get into Peep Show, but at the insistence of some of my friends I did manage it and it really is one of the best sitcoms around. Agonising to watch most of the time, but consistently fantastically hilarious

Louis CK remembers a classic joke-an excerpt

Well, that's the fascinating thing about me, Yogi. I can recognize that someone has flaws and STILL like them. Amazing, n'est ce pas?

I always felt like "what's Ricky Gervais doing in this group?" Not that Gervais isn't funny but he hasn't exactly accrued the same stand-up gravitas as a Seinfeld or a Rock or a C.K.

I agree but he addresses that at one point and that's a great thing. Also I think it was his idea, his show.
Yeah I looked it up, Gervais Ink. his production company produced this special. I think they need like 40 more, even if it was just rehashing constantly I would watch all of them over and over.

I didn't realize that Gervais produced this show (which I have seen) but now that I do, I think he has an inferiority complex much like his David Brent character. Instead of injecting himself into the discussion and making it weird by over-reacting to everything (the above clip is a terrific example) he should have excused himself and inserted, I dunno, Louis Black. I think Black would have had a solid point of view on the topic. Or how about a woman?

Jeez did you not like Ricky Gervais that much? He was fine, I love this special, Ricky did nothing to make it bad. Also I know it sounds bad but I can't think of a woman comic that can keep up with these guys. That's probably due to my ignorance though.
