World's First $9 Computer

AeroMechanical says...

Yeah, but that isn't the purpose of these. They tried that with OLPC and it was a good design but there were much more helpful ways to spend money to help third world children and it didn't really work out for a variety of reasons. These are, at best like the Raspberry Pi, intended for poor and middle-class western kids, to give them a 'hackable' platform that encouraged learning about how computers work (like the Commodore 64s and BBC Micros of old). Ideally, they would be distributed to public school students. Cheap is important, but not if it means you forgo the 'hackable'-ness.

But also my advice was really more intended for those here, who would be buying something like this to mess around with for DIY stuff.

Education for someone in a third world country isn't necessarily re-writing the assembly code. It is just enjoying using the computer. Learning to type. Learning how a mouse works. Making something beautiful. Writing a paper for school. From there, curiosity and fun will do the rest.

The world's most beautiful sustainable font

Who is adding the tanks to the printer? The people selling them to retailers, the retailer, or is it a DIY? I'm guessing the lines connect to the cartridges in the printer and just kind of keep them full? Or do they tap directly into where the print cartridge connect to the heads? I think it's cool. Thanks for sharing.

Another question is do people in Thailand have a need for lots of printing? I'm in the U.S. and would say that personally, my printing needs have gone down 90% say over the last 10 years. At home, I print maybe 5 pages a month.

Here in Thailand, where respect for patents / IP is low, (SE Asia is notorious for fake manufactured goods, pirated "soft" media, and hardware hacks / bypasses) I'd guess that around 90% of inkjet printers sold have a tank system glued onto the side with ink lines running into the cartridges from big CYMK reservoirs. I never buy new cartridges unless the print head gets damaged/worn out -- instead, I just buy cheap LARGE bottles of the different ink colors and refill the reservoirs. (Image link of such a setup HERE)

That kind of mod would be a gray or black-market item in the West, but here the laissez-faire attitude about such things has some positive effects. At least, for a consumer (like me), or someone concerned about the environmental impact of all the waste packaging for ink carts (like the dude in this video).

Haven't all of their videos had the DIY feel to them? Kinda dirty but amazing all the same?

cool video, great concept. Terrible camera. It looks nice every time they set the camera down, but it looks terrible when in motion, and considering the amount of times it's actually moving, it brings the quality down quite a few notches.

Small-Scale Ant Genocide Yields Small-scale Alien Artifact

Note to self: sculpt scene of a horribly drawn-and-quartered human corpse by the way of Alien Art aficionados, which focuses on their love and admiration for that special little way the entrails dribble out when you pour molten rock down the throat of a live specimen.

Between this and the classroom lesson utilizing consumer-available, DIY remote-control cockroaches, we've really got it coming to us.

World's First 3D Printed Metal Gun

chingalera says...

This is a proof-of-concept step with the technology as far as guns go, look to the near future for more wild and crazy DIY with much more than weaponry-Once they are able to provide ultra-durable raw materials (nano-esters, poly carbonate crystals, etc.) for the sludge they feed these printers the game will change overnight.

can print a gun out of metal but use the cheapest method to tests it, good to see they had faith in their engineering too

Nobody is getting into these shorts

This product is a non-utilitarian piece of over-priced garbage. The women they market this to that will actually BUY it are types that spend thousands of dollars on covetous bullshit, over-priced meals, housekeepers, etc. Privileged, paranoid, nigga-rich white bitches. How about a DIY belt with a fucking padlock onnit? Cheaper and more effective.

Krav Maga and utilization of pokey stuff: The two fastest and best ways for women to not only stop an attacker, but seriously fuck them up permanently.
Kung Fu or a pistol works fine, too.

Oh and ladies, please continue kicking your assailant in the genitals and soft tissue until police arrive?? Why send them back out on the street or even to trial, eh?? Embrace the mind of your attacker....with a heel to his temple after he lay bleeding on the ground. That'll learn 'em to practice unilaterally satisfying sex again.

Hit and Run 5K™ | Making Grown Ninjas Cry Since 2013

radx says...

Damn straight.

There's nothing even remotely like it over here, so we set up a rudimentary Zombie 5k on a deserted training course for tanks. Couple of basins, couple of mudpits, lots of hay bales... very DIY, lots of makeshift obstacles.

Shitload of work, low turnout, great fun.
