Bitter Lake - 2015 film by Adam Curtis

Trancecoach says...

"They couldn’t see the complex reality that was in front of them - because the stories they had been told about the world had become so simplified that they lacked the perceptual apparatus to see reality any longer."

Not Curtis, though. As he showed in Century of the Self, Curtis ain't fooled like the rest of us. He must have special powers.

I don't particularly like O'Reilly's conservatism and warmongering, but about this, Colbert is simply ignorant or worse. "OMG, mercenaries going rogue!" Because, y'know, the state's armies never go "rogue" or cause any "mayhem." Nope! Not in WW 1. Not in WW 2. Not in Korea. Not in Vietnam. Not in Latin America. Not in Iraq. Not in Afghanistan, or anywhere else!. Nope. Not ever.

The American forces never goes rogue and Bradley/Chelsea Manning is not being locked up for exposing the never-rogue nature of the American forces.

I don't think Colbert is an idiot. So I'm inclined to think that Hoppe may be correct and Colbert is just part of the "intelligensia," paid to promote stupidity among the masses. (OMG, I'm beginning to sound like "OMG Bernays!")

Black Range Rover Runs Over Bikers in NYC

@newtboy
Yeah, I tend to be much harder on white people-In my twisted mind it's the white man that influenced these folks to start a douchebag motorcycle club of assorted-ethnicity, rice-burner-riders. White people invented sheit sequels to crappy gang-oriented illegal racing films AND the 'century of the self' through monopolistic media domination/ indoctrination.

OH, and I also lived in the bay area when that group-bicycle ride Critical Mass was in it's infancy-An ex-roommate was a motorcycle messenger and a founding member of the event and was killed in a major event ride by an 18-wheeler who clipped him whilst riding through the streets blocking traffic. Tragic and stupid, all for a whiny cause.

"This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy."

Ethos Documentary (War)

sepatown says...

despite the message, this is an awful documentary. it just bounces through a whole collage of clips ripped straight out of much better films like 'The Corporation', 'Zeitgeist', 'The Century of the Self' and 'War Made Easy' etc. whoever made it can go fuck themselves.

Started skipping around 30s, was trying to find out the message but it just.. keeps.. dragging... on....playing music.. showing small clips...and stupid editing. would declare as low quality and boring.

the message is quite clear to those who are aware of the constant and pervasive attempt to shackle us all in a cycle of manufactured desire/want.
it is ever-present and non-stop.
a devious and destructive machine that promises happiness but in reality just creates:insecurity, apprehension, unworthiness and divisiveness.
might i suggest this most excellent documentary:

The Militarization of the Police Force

drattus says...

Raverman, that's garbage and that's a good part of why they've gotten away with the level of militarization and control that they have.

More promiscuous? Ever heard of the 60s? Hell, penny arcades showed porn almost as soon as film was developed, turn of last century or so, search vintage porn and you might find more than you expect. Great Grandpa probably liked his porn too.

More violent? Bullshit. Crime rates have fallen and fallen again since the 60s and 70s and the biggest part of why they were as high as they were then is simple demographics. Young people are more likely to test the limits than older ones and the baby boom generation was just hitting their prime. Combine the age with the boldness large numbers of them would offer and you've got yourself some statistics. And statistics that fell on their own as those youth grew up and invested in the system rather than in rebellion. Crime rates in most areas that matter are just a fraction today of what they used to be, but the news coverage is better so we HEAR about more of it.

We don't have neighbors and community largely because of us. We don't give a damned anymore. We've become so used to having our thoughts and opinions spoon fed to us by the press or politicians that we've forgot how to read a paper or do research, come to a decision on our own.

There's a documentary here on the sift you might want to watch. It's called "The Century of the Self" and it examines how psychology first started to be used to manipulate people into buying products through advertising then when the politicians realized how useful it could be they started to use it as well. Over the last 100 years we've progressively been made more and more unthinking and dependent and we've got nobody to blame for it but ourselves, because we allowed it. It was just easier to let someone else do the thinking. If you want to know where we are today and why this is a decent start.

Brilliant Craig Ferguson Rant About Why Society Sucks

enoch says...

mr ferguson lets the mass marketers off way too easy.the relationship that marketers form with consumers at a very young age is carefully planned and executed.
please take the time to watch this excellent doc from adam curtis:
http://www.videosift.com/video/The-Century-of-the-Self-full-four-part-documentary
it's a pretty accurate account on how things have changed in the west's view of individuality and sense of self and how that sense has been manipulated by appealing to our "irrational" emotions.

knowledge by itself garners little but the act of aquiring.
knowledge in conjunction with experience, tempered with reason is wisdom.
saying that an older persons advice, thoughts or perceptions are no longer relevant due to their lack of understanding of all things "new"(translation:young)not only reveals a lack of historical comprehension, but is powerfully naive.
which is very much a "youthful" trait.
