Considering that everyone basically empties out of Canberra on holidays - there was actually a really impressive and expensive seeming fireworks display. This is a very prosperous city - thanks to Australian taxpayers.

Happy New Year, everybody, and especially critical_d
I had a quiet one, so no stories to tell. There were a surprisingly large number of illegal fireworks set off nearby though (hmm...).
The legal fireworks in Melbourne had an issue or two as well:

The Whitlams are playing a free concert here in Canberra on New Year's Eve. We'll be there.>> ^spoco2:

Eternal Nightcap by The Whitlams. Just a defining album from 1997. I hadn't really heard of them at all... then I saw them play at my university, and was blown away. Usually I find it a little hard to get into a live act if I've never heard the music before. But they were just awesome. I got hold of the album and played it constantly... know most of the words to the entire album I would think.

The big track off it, in Australia was No Aphrodisiac, an absolute classic:
Track 1: No Aphrodisiac

Followed by one of the three 'Charlie' songs from the album... just beautiful:
Track 2: Buy now Pay Later (Charlie No. 2)

Track 4 is one of the singles they released, a real energy packed song... great stuff:
Track 4: You sound like Louis Burdett

The whole album is one to listen to from beginning to end, it's well and truly engrained in so many Australian's minds, and evokes that year and surrounding ones with such clarity.
Awesome album

I don't like clutter. I don't like victorian buildings with fretwork, cornices faux columns etc. Nooks where dust collects and never leaves. Long planes of molded concrete surrounded by trees appeal to my aesthetic sense. >> ^kymbos:

As an architect's son and a former Canberran, I can only disagree with you on the architecture front. With the notable exception of the members bar of Old Parliament House - that thing is gorgeous.
Good luck in the Can. The place is empty over summer, as the public servants exodus to Bateman's Bay takes hold.

Where've you spent time in the last few years, and of which of those places are you fondest?
I've gone from England to France to Canada to Australia to New Zealand, and I'll probably move on again by the end of next year. Japan, as my wife is half-Japanese, or maybe another Australian city. Looking for ideas!

I've never really lived there, but I've spent a half year in Japan spread over a couple of couple-month trips and love it. For whatever that's worth.

I think it really depends on where you are at in life. I lived in Japan in my 20s and loved it - but I think it would be challenging with kids.

Australia is generally great for families - and for careers, it's just about the only country that hasn't been hammered by the GFC.

Having said that - I did a little tour of Oregon earlier this year and found it to be just about the best place I've ever been. It ticked a whole heap of boxes for me.

I have plans to join the ACT Pirate Party.>> ^spoco2:

I'm hoping that you, @persephone and the kids find it to be a great place, I'm sure you will. Maybe you can move into politics and pass a law that everyone of voting age must visit Videosift at least once a week. Some sort of cultural requirement.

*promote. Rumour has it that Apple's new Siri voice recognition will be at least partially this good. The announcement is tomorrow - and I have to say I'm more excited by this than any new hardware. It's supposed to be integrated with Wolfram Alpha, which is a website that I love. Being able to say "what's the difference in population between Brisbane and Canberra" and get a good answer, would be pretty cool.
