uh oh, somebody went to Caltech...

heh heh, not to mention the fact its obviously wet and the pavement is uneven... but you only live.. as long as medical science can keep you alive.

Considering this is from someone at MIT, they dont seem particularly smart with the no helmet. It's fairly obvious if you're travelling at any speed faster than the human body naturally travels, you need protection, and there's none on this wheelchair/person.

Parallel Universes DO Exist. I kid you not.

With reference to well known the double slit experiment, where an interference patrern is observed, I quote from the video: "Scientists say that this is only possible if the particle exists in different universes". That's rubbish. This experiment demonstrates the wave-particle duality of quantum mechanics; that matter behaves both as a wave and as particle; two aspects of a singular nature. I'm all for pop-science, but I can't tolerate junk science like this. It's harmful and it's condescending. I can't believe that this is anything other than intentionally misleading.

It's a shame how few documentaries do science justice. I'd recommend a good book: "Quantum Physics: A Beginner's Guide" by Alastair Rae if you can handle a little math, or "Deep Down Things, The Breathtaking Beauty of Particle Physics" by Bruce Schumm, which I'm reading currently and which is nothing short of brilliant.

Oh, and here is a great tip! If you like watching science videos, check out Professor Muller's "Physics for Future Presidents" web-casts (also known as "A Descriptive Introduction to Physics). These are video taped lectures from caltech. The dude rocks, he explains everything very clearly and he's a lot of fun to boot:

People involved with Caltech were involved with this movie. Note the DEI part way through, for instance (it's a Caltech catch-phrase). They even came in and copied hall graffiti for the movie. I loved it.

Choggie's Song

Fletch says...

Still trying to circle the wagons? Empty threats and name-dropping in PMs not working for you this time? Lot of cut-n-pasting and effort up there for so few interested observers. Of course, in your mind, the Choggie Show is only show in town. Must really be festering, huh? Does it bother you that your life begins and ends at your keyboard and mine doesn't? Is your life so pathetic? You need help.

Now, I won't be able to baby-sit you today. I have appointments and much to do, and quite frankly, I am not occupied by thoughts of Choggie after I hit the power button. Trust me, I do know how hard that must be for you to believe. You are obsessed now, anyway. I no longer have to instigate. It was almost too easy.

Shining through.

Have a nice day.

Blue Man Group - Global Warming Warning

choggie says...

"Aliens Cause Global Warming"

In 2003 he gave a controversial lecture at Caltech entitled "Aliens Cause Global Warming" [4] in which he expressed his views of the danger of "consensus science" — especially with regard to what he regards as popular but disputed theories such as nuclear winter, the dangers of second-hand smoke, and the global warming controversy. Crichton has been critical of widespread belief of ETs and UFOs, citing the fact that there is no conclusive proof of their existence. Crichton stated that "The Drake equation cannot be tested and therefore SETI is not science. SETI is unquestionably a religion." Crichton has commented that belief in purported scientific theories without a factual basis is more akin to faith than science.

Ya know, in retrospect I have to wonder if all this hype is dangerous. He is being revered in death for his actions in life, and I must take a moment to reflect on his behavior as an animal handler. This post won't make me popular, but I have to pontificate. ;-)

He was wildly popular with the kids, and he often - very often - didn't use the best safety in the presence of animals. Remeber him dangling his baby over a crocodile? Is this the best way to model behavior for kids?

The reality is, he wasn't careful. That, in my book, is a form of disrespect to the animal. In order to have been stung, he must have been relatively close to the stingray...the barb is located halfway down the tail, which means he was probably almost right on top of it. He invaded the stingray's comfort zone. It couldn't see a swimmer above it, and probably thought it was a shark. The truth is, it was simply protecting itself. Irwin should have known better.

Here's some info: http://calteches.library.caltech.edu/149/01/Russell.pdf#search=%22%22giant%20stingray%22%20%2Blength%22

So, be safe, all you Coral Reef swimmers. And shuffle those feet.
