> this isn't bi-polar disorder

Cant be sure of that. I've seen bipolar disorder in its full glory. This can fit for sure.

I'd bet $$$ this chick parties too much, eats too many prescribed pharmaceuticals every day, and has split her personality solidly into two people - the unmedicated crazy Mrs. Hyde seen here, and a drugged up but calmer Mrs. Jekyll. Maybe she had kids too young and "lost" her youth. Maybe her husband there is a total P.O.S. too.

that is true, even if he would of punched her in self defence, as she did have a pretty admirable weapon, even to subdue the situation becuase children where present, he would probably get shafted for assault. THe oh so tuff male in me says punch the fucker. the law says bow down and let her shit all over me.

Looks sadly familiar...out-of-control rage is not a terribly uncommon behavior among bipolar sufferers.

And dropping her with one punch sounds oh so tough, but if you didn't notice, she's got a golf club. The smart thing to do is stay back and let the cops deal with it. If you "drop" her, guess who gets charged with assault?

bipolar possibly. potentially an alcoholic as well. jail or prosecution isn't going to help. she needs serious psychiatric intervention. The only thing that comes to mind is 'sad'. The child(ren) are caught in the middle.. a child yelled 'stop'.

maybe seeing herself in this video will help snap her into getting treatment.

xxovercastxx says...

This is, uh, not really about bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is cyclical, alternating extreme highs and extreme lows. This guy is describing a kid who goes through a traumatic event and a difficult period in his life and comes out changed.

That's not a disorder; that's life.

Bipolar Disorder. Schizophrenia. OCD. A vast array of pseudo-scientific crap spewed by the psychiatric/psychological professions (frikkin' witchdoctors, in reality).

If you get out an E-Meter, I'm leaving.

That is EXACTLY what came to my mind as I was reading that...

Now, I'll proceed to argue for both sides...

Alright, to be fair, some animals may well suffer from these, but we have no way to tell (even in humans, most of these are "diagnosed" mainly based on self-reporting). It's fairly easy to believe that most animal's brains are enough simpler than a human's that such imbalances are far more uncommon, or even non-existent. The great apes, though, are all so close to human level complexity that I don't think you could argue a meaningful difference.

As for dolphins, they live in a world that is so wholly alien that I seriously doubt we'll ever be able to be sure of anything about their mental processes.

Palin Resigns as Governer of Alaska!

I just want to know one thing: does she have nobody with a brain on her team, or does she just refuse to listen to them? Who lets her read/write these speeches?

Honestly, my bipolar wife is more coherent in her most manic moments...Palin's just scary. Almost as scary as the idiots who would still vote for her.

the fact is that they biologically work by damaging the brain's cognitive functions.

All we have is AN understanding of how the brain works. It may not be definitive, we never made it to claim that we know exactly how it is intended to work.

Therefore how can we know that something damages it rather than enhances it? Perhaps we were supposed to take these drugs in order to develop our brain correctly?

We don't and perhaps can't! Everything we know thanks to science is an interpretation of what we observe that is convenient to us to identify a pattern in nature. That doesn't mean we know how it works. It means we've identified a pattern and a system in place that seems to accurately describe and predict how the thing works. And we accept that theory until it fails us and we adopt a better one that doesn't fail us. How long ago did we think that we KNEW that the earth was the centre of the universe? Is anyone so arrogant as to claim that we know better NOW? We have to hope that we know better (else why try?), but accept that we might not

I know i'm getting a little bit philosophical, but i think that's the underlying point of the video. How do we know that what we think is true is true? Maybe bipolar is just an alternate state of being, or maybe an evolutionary step. And the same for many other things which we percieve. Or maybe not.

I will say that i think people with bipolar (and in fact depression) are more prone to the kind of introspection that might lead to the belief that they're not broken, they're just different.

anti-psychotic meds prescribed for children

SlipperyPete says...

an incredibly important story. these drugs are overprescribed off-label not just in children, but also in the elderly. these were developed and approved for treating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in otherwise healthy adults. the clinical trials did not include enough children or older adults to be considered to have sufficient power.

it should be said this class of drugs can be quite effective for treating the conditions for which they were originally approved.

also, that voice-over announcer needs a kick in the throat.
