The Two Year Old Astrophysicist

Louis CK - Things You Dont Tell Kids

Unsung_Hero says...

Very funny stuff. Completely wrong though. The sun is never going to explode, it's too small. It will, however, eventually become a red giant, completely engulfing earth in the process. I guess that's why he's a comedian and not an astrophysicist

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes that I'm sure all (successful) comedians live by...
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."

Well I think that's what he meant by "explode". "Expand" I guess is the same thing when you're talking about how a star envelopes and vaporizes your mother planet.

While there's no doubt that Kurzweil is extremely knowledgeable about some things, such as computer technology, he makes the same mistake that many highly intelligent people do: Thinking that being smart in one field of expertise makes you somehow smart in almost any other field that you're interested in. Futurists are about the worst who fall into this category.

Don't misunderstand me. There's nothing wrong with making predictions about tomorrow's technology. We all do it from time to time. However most of us know that our knowledge of technology and science is very limited at best, so our predictions shouldn't be taken as prophesies handed down from God. I don't see many astrophysicists making predictions about when a cure for the common cold will be found, not do I see many meteorologists predicting when a commercially viable fusion reactor will go into production. But that doesn't intimidate most futurists. Everything is up for grabs. Never let one's lack of knowledge stand in the way of making wild-ass speculations predictions.

Anyone who doesn't approach the prophesies of futurists with serious skepticism probably should find another hobby that tends to discourage critical thinking.

for the kurzweil / singularity fan-people (Science Talk Post)

Ah, that's news to me. I thought you were referring to him drinking a shot.
I be getting old.>> ^SlipperyPete:

>> ^kronosposeidon:
By the apparently informal nature of this gathering, he may well have imbibed an alcoholic beverage or two ahead of time. Not that he sounds inebriated in any way, but then maybe he can hold his liquor.
Hey bartender, I'll have what the astrophysicist is drinking.>> ^SlipperyPete:
In the thumbnail, it looks like he's lickin' a shot for science.
So, business as usual.

Hubble Update 7: Confirms Existence of Dark Energy 04/12/10

Throbbin says...

According to Wikipedia, I gather that the confirmation of Dark Energy makes the existence of Dark Matter very likely.>> ^direpickle:

>> ^Throbbin:
Right you are. Guess I bungled that in my glee.
Although I suppose the existence of the one all but confirms the existence of the other.>> ^direpickle:
It looks like this is a confirmation of Dark Energy and not Dark Matter. They're different things with unfortunately similar names.

I was really excited at the prospect of proof of dark matter! I'm less-excited by proof of dark energy, because that all but confirms a dismal end to the universe. Still, it's neat when science works. I'm not an astrophysicist, but I don't think the Dark Matter/Energy theories are related so that one implies the other. I could be wrong, though!

I know the sift boasts some experts in the field. What do you guys think?
