A little bit of information about Asperger Syndrome

Let's be honest, we just use this excuse when we don't want to call someone a nerd or a basement dweller.

I get what you're trying to say, there is a lot of excuse making in the naughty children fraternity. Doesn't mean the thing doesn't exist though.

You're about as funny as a fire in a hospital, fucker.

I wasn't trying to be funny, just stating the obvious.

And fire in hospital would be funny under certain circumstances.

I had a buddy in high school with asperger's. Actually in high school we just thought he was an asshole, but we found out later on. Anyhow, this guy scored over 1500 on the SATs (back when that meant something) and was just incredibly smart. Didn't have to study a damn thing. Somehow he was really good with girls too. I guess he just didn't give a shit (which high school girls love, apparently).

Anyway we went our separate ways after high school. A couple of years later I heard a story about how he did a heroic amount of LSD and was found wandering the streets of LA, knocking on people's doors looking for a black woman that was Jesus. He was soaked in his own urine. That part of the story was unnecessary but true.

Having Asperger's is no status symbol, just a useful diagnosis for parents, schools etc. One of my daughters has high-functioning autism (which Asperger's is a subset of). These diagnoses do mean that the person has at least average intelligence (as opposed to other forms of autism, which can be associated with low intelligence), but it doesn't mean the person is a genius. Of course the geniuses can be very interesting and get more press. I thought the young man in the video did a good job of describing how his mind works, especially in the social arena. For more on Asperger's I would recommend Daniel Tammet's Born on a Blue Day.

This girl I know has aspergers. All through high school she was picked on, beat up, rocks thrown at her, gum in her hair. Some really awful crap happened to her along the way. She's ridiculously creative too, she made a chain link shirt that was really awesome for some art final project.

I don't see what the big deal is or why people think people with aspergers are soo strange. Don't really see the difference between them and most other folks.

Just because Einstein was smart and was not good with people doesn't mean he had Asperger's. It's impossible to find out now that he's dead. Any diagnosis is pure BS speculation. There are plenty of geniuses without Aspergers who are socially inept.

(Not to knock on you, kp, I'm sure you had a doctor confirm it.)

I'm not so sure "curing" autism is such a great idea. Some people with autism go on to do great things.

The autistic spectrum is quite varied. Some people with with Aspergers or mild autism can be very functional. Some autistic savants can even have incredible abilities, but those cases are exceedingly rare.

Most people with autism suffer from developmental delays and mental retardation, and it is quite a devastating disease for families. I remember seeing this one little girl with severe autism who had a broken jaw because she would hit herself in the face ~30 000 times a day (they actually counted).

ADD Cure

HollywoodBob says...

>> ^deedub81:
Lazy parents cause ADD.

I'd like to expand that statement if I could.

ADD is a real physiological disorder, as are ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder, and Asperger's syndrome; 4 of the more popular disorders that unruly kids are diagnosed with nowadays. I have 2 nieces who have been diagnosed bi-polar, one of my nephews has been diagnosed with aspergers, three of my cousins were ADD growing up, and my Brother-in-law was ADHD, and I will be the first to tell you that none of them suffer from the disorders they were diagnosed with. They were all victims of lousy parents and lazy doctors. Parents don't want to accept the blame for their out of control kids, and the doctors don't want to set them straight and tell them they raised little assholes(plus they enjoy the kick backs from the pharmaceutical companies for all the drugs they hand out).

That all being said I think it's unfortunate that this has become so common because it marginalizes the kids who really do suffer from these illnesses, kids who need extra support and understanding in order to overcome their conditions and succeed in the world.

Lots of people with Asperger's do fine in life. It's really not all that debilitating towards success in the right fields (ones not relying on social aptitude).
