Yeah, I've been a fan of CoD, but am slowly losing interest as they are getting worse each year, despite them putting 3 different devs on each new release.

Ghosts was published by Activision, but I know what you mean about the publishers pushing for a certain release whether a game is done or not. Seems like the last few years devs have been trying to skip the quality assurance phase, and it's only hurt them and their brand in my eyes.

I'm glad to hear that at least CoD is selling less these days... I can only hope it's enough to show the publisher to not skip that optimization phase of development, and to make sure their game runs better on all different setups of PCs, and not solely making sure it runs smooth on consoles.

Crossfire and SLI can be dicey though just because the GPU's have to know how to talk back and forth and stay in sync with each other, which just escalates the probability that something can go wrong either from the game developers' end or from driver support . Single GPUs are plenty powerful these days, so I'm right there with you with the single GPU approach. I've not gone back to multi-GPU since my 4870x2 many years ago (which usually had issues due to ATI constantly breaking the drivers and then having to fix it again every other update).

Pretty much my thoughts.

My guess is, the proprietary dedicated server they have is what's limiting the player count. That or the consoles themselves. I can't imagine ex-Infinity Ward developers would have included AI bots by design. They would have had to increase Titan cooldown to compensate with more players but that would have been an improvement in itself, as after the first few minutes, if you're any good you spend most of your time in one and the game plays like Mechwarrior. Not that that's bad, but it should be a novelty, not the norm for what is still an FPS.

Very disappointed by forced match-making as well. Now that both EA and Activision are doing it, I would hate it to become the standard even on PC. Odds are I will be playing CSS/TF2 for another 10 years it seems. Although even Valve is nudging us towards it now in TF2.

That and the huge inter-game downtime. Again, if TF2 can let you change loadouts mid-game and allow you to vote on the next map while you're in the previous one, I don't see why a game released nearly 7 years later struggles with this.

And, there were custom loadouts even in the beta, with 5 customization slots and 3 mods for all of the primary weapons, you just had to reach a certain rank to unlock customization.

But, I was disappointed too, but mainly because it was a maximum of 12-player games, small maps, no server browser, no keyboard chat and no single-player. Honestly it gives the impression they designed it to be peer-to-peer multiplayer, then late in development switched it to dedicated servers, without actually leveraging any of the advantages of having dedicated servers.

If you gave EA money for this abortion, you are part of the reason why some publishers (EA, Ubisoft, Activision...) want to treat PC games as $60 rentals, and you are most definitely part of the problem. There are an ABUNDANCE of better, cheaper PC games developed by companies who want your business and won't treat you as just an open wallet. Sim City was a great franchise once, but just like Diablo, Crysis, and anything from Bioware nowadays, it's been consolized, socialized, and/or monetized into crap that most PC gamers want nothing to do with.

This "real cities do not exist in a bubble" is just corporate blathering to justify the always-on DRM, as if fans of the series have forgotten it has always been, first and foremost, a single player game, and a very enjoyable one at that. It is ABSOLUTELY IDIOTIC to force such a drastic change in gameplay/genre into a game that has been so defined by it's gameplay/genre over the years. Same thing when EA remade Syndicate as a FPS. A FPS Syndicate ISN'T SYNDICATE! I don't want to play with anyone else. I don't want my fucking savegames on your shitty server, even if it was an awesome server. If I give you $60 for your game, it's now MY game, and you leave me the fuck alone!

AAARRG! It's like PC game developers are all being run by fucking console kiddies and greedy shitstain corporate types who never played NetQuake or DWANGO, or Heretic, or System Shock, or X-Com, or any of the Black Isle or pre-Dragon Age 2 Bioware stuff, or any Diablo without a "III" behind it, or Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, or the Ultimas, or the Roberta Williams adventure games, or Wing Commander, or Tie Fighter, or MechWarrior. Deus Ex! A full fucking Deus EX play-through would be required before I'd even THINK about hiring your ass to develop a new PC game! On second thought, play it three times, once for each ending!

uuuuugh... so... anyway... yeah, fuck EA.

Re your comment about joysticks on Mech 2: the Thrustmaster stick + throttle worked the best because that's what they put on my desk at Activision. The rudder pedals were pretty cool too.

It warms the cockles of my black heart to see that people still remember Mech 2 fondly. The tale of its creation is long and bizarre; I may finish writing it down (if I get off my butt someday); it got weird beyond belief before it was all done.

It was accused in the press of feeling like a flight simulator, which is funny because that's what it was. I re-used the overall software design from a (real) flight simulator I wrote for my previous aerospace-type job.

Activision was huge fun when it was tiny. My license plate still reads MECH2.

My bad on D1 dungeons.

There will always be cookie-cutter builds. And besides, when you're talking about 'the' build, you're talking about the ideal items to have, the vast majority of people will never get there. Meanwhile, the options for 'best with what you have' varied heaps. I played D3 through with a Monk, and the entire time, the only stats that felt worthwhile chasing were damage, dexterity and vitality.

I'm not saying it didn't have dark elements, but vast portions of the story, dialogue and tone, particularly after Act 1 (which I thought was best part of the game), where juvenile and completely off for a Diablo game. I mean for christ sake, the game delved into damsel in distress territory multiple times. Anyway posted this elsewhere, going to just copy paste:

1. Story tone is horribly off for a Diablo game. Act 1, the tone is almost that right mix of dark, macabre & grim horror albeit with overly colourful graphics. Then, in Act 2 and especially 3/4 the game becomes flat out goofy. It's almost like different studios designed the two parts. Regardless, it's obvious the whole gothic, cheesy but serious tone of previously Diablo games has been thoroughly ditched.

It becomes obvious there is a reason that most of the prime evils were mostly mute & why your characters was kept to making sarcastic remarks and one liners in D2. Diablo beretting you with grating "if it wasn't for your meddling kids" dialogue completely ruins the game's tone. Overall the mix of occasional ultra-violence and the overt colourfulness and childish NPC banter gives it an almost surreal and contradictory theme. As if a design house was of two minds, fighting over dominance over the franchise's feel.

There was just no need to muck with what was not broken to the point that it's hard for me to NOT imagine Activision sitting behind the developers dictating them how well the WoW tone sits with target demographics. There is nothing wrong with WoW existing in its own space with it's own unique identity. There's a problem with creative variety between Blizzard games becoming non-existent because they've caught on to what sells best and decided to stick to that.


As for launch issues, I didn't play D2 at launch, but that's not what really bugs me. It is abundantly obvious though that foisting online-only is part of the reason they're having so many launch issues.

D2 felt like a huge leap on D1. Randomized dungeons, huge increase in class and especially item variety, introduction of a vast swathe of new environments. In comparison critically looking at D3, while it does have an expanded skills system, at the end of a prodigious 11 year development cycle, D3 has far less item variety at launch, and arguably simplified gameplay mechanics on a number of levels.
Personally, I happen to also think the story is a let down, the tone of the game has been inappropriately been made cartoonish (art design non-withstanding).

D1 had randomized dungeons. Item variety in D2 was very limited because there often was one set of unique item that was 'THE' item for a specific build. The expanded environments in D2 were also very cartoony compared to the dungeons of D1, and calling D3 cartoonish with levels like the Halls of Agony is outright ridiculous.
The fact of the matter is that the grass is always greener, and we all look at the past with rose colored glasses. History repeats itself, but it seems like few people remember all the problems, controversy and bitching surrounding Diablo 2's launch.

If the video just criticised EA's game production system and how it results in a massive lack of innovation, and how PC gamers tend to get shafted, fine. I agree. But this guy implies that players who buy the latest FIFA, Battlefield or whatever are fools and that's insulting. I bought BF3 because I liked BF:BC2, not because something shiny was dangled in front of me and not because IGN gave it good marks. Likewise, I bought FIFA12 because I played FIFA11 lots and even though little has changed, I've still got many, many times as much gameplay from it than I've got from most other games from developers and publishers big and small.

My complaint isn't that poor little EA don't deserve the criticism. My complaint is that he seems to think people who don't share his opinion must be fools.

I have some pretty strong and negative opinions about EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and now, Blizzard. I'm thinking this was made by a PC gamer. Lot's to be pissed/disgusted about if you are a PC gamer and have been for at least 10-15 years or so.

The entire concept of selling you a product with a verbiage that your personal copy/account can become obsolete any time Blizzard feels like you have broken the EULA seems draconian to me. I am surprised there hasn't been a class action against these MMO firms. If I want to sell my WOW account, I don't see why Blizzard needs to be involved. Last time I sold my car, I didn't recall the manufacturer canceling the warranty or reprocessing the car. Activision/Blizzard and EA have some sordid lawyers, and they'll keep on pushing micro-transactions while barring the rightful owners of the purchased product from doing the same. Assholes!


I don't know. Look at it like this. You go to Chuck E. Cheese and buy 50 bucks worth of tokens. First thing you do is go over to the skeet shoot and climb up the ramp and start dropping the balls in by hand so you always get max points.

Chuck E Cheese has obvious rules you have to play by, like "don't climb on stuff that shouldn't be climbed on" and the general way to play a game. They can kick you out and tell you to never come back and now you have a handful of tickets and tokens that are only good there at Chuck E Cheese.


Blizzard is on the hook for storing and preserving the integrity of their game. Versus with a car, the manufacturers have no obligation to your vehicle....you have to maintain it, register it, etc. Blizzard does all of that because by the very nature of the MMO, without it you wouldn't have a game worth playing. Everyone would be cheating, modifying their characters, creating new ones from scrap and generally making any mechanics of the game worthless beyond maximum damage, maximum run speed, and GM locked commands. You could do anything if they didn't preserve the character content and reign in abuse. Plus your stuff only has value because they do this. And they do this because without it, the game would be shit.

I mean I guess if you setup your own blizzard server and maintained the game integrity, you could make an argument that you should be able to sell things without their stopping you. Since you are on the hook for whatever trouble it causes on your server....but otherwise you are making them responsible for the person you sell it to, plus you both hold them responsible for making access to these characters possible. And you hold them responsible for making sure their fraud system doesn't detect someone across the world now logging into your accounts.....etc etc. All for free. Hell they don't even move a character to another server for free..they charge stupid money for that kind of stuff.
