Looking for recommendation for a new laptop. (Geek Talk Post)

direpickle says...

Another thought: If you have any thoughts of ultra-portables or whatever, you might want to wait on AMD's Fusion processors in a month(?) or so. Not sure what manufacturers are going to use them, but that's likely to shake things up a lot on the low-power end.

Well, there are ways to install Hackintosh if you really want to on an otherwise windows machine.

I've even gotten a version to run in virtualbox on my AMD windows machine. Good times.

surely this has nothing to do with AMD , i mean anny more than anything else as thiswill surly work with anny gpu.

HAHA LOL the power piont , i mean so stupid tranistoin effects are like the most uselss stupid anoying thing that makes you look like an idoit if you use them. where gpu should be used ( and probably is used) in poweer pionts is if you are imbedding a video.

the most effective talks using power piont are ones with a good speeker and slides that are simple to the piont and just give a foot note to what the speeker is saying. ( or images for them to piont out specifc things)

I feel ya, my wife and strangely all of my girlfriends of the past were Mac people and it's been the source of some bitter arguments. I recently built a new pc at the beginning of this summer for roughly $1000 and it SCREAMS compared to what you can get out of a Mac for that price point.

My system:

--Gigabyte 890FX (overclocks very well) $179.99
--AMD 1090T 3.2ghz 6 cores w/ Turbo clocks to 3.6 $290 on newegg but i got a deal at the time for $100 off combo
I've got it running @ 3.6 stable on air and 4ghz when other cores are inactive and turbo kicks in
Newegg has it listed
--4 gigs of kingston 1600 DDR3 ~$100~
--ATI Radeon 5850 w/ 1 gig of memory $290
--New powersupply ~$100-$120
and $50 for a new 250gig WD hard drive

And although those are estimates w/ the $100 off the chip @ the time it did come out to about $1000 w/ the tax and all. I recycled the case and the optical drive I had and used stock cooling that came with the chip. I dont have any performance numbers available right now but if you know a thing or two about hardware you know they have all kinds of tricks to help you part with your cash for less.

To be fair, I'll throw in the cost of my monitor which was ~200 my operating system is Windows 7 ultimate which I got from college for $15 and my keyboard and mouse ~50 total
so that's my ~$1300 system

the cheapest comparable mac here is using an i3 Intel processor (see chart for performance) http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i3-530-processor-review/12

the video card on the system
http://www.guru3d.com/article/ati-radeon-hd-4670-review/9 compare those scores to the card i got
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2848/4
look @ the crysis scores and bear in mind that the second reviewer was using FSAA and AF at very high

you get the idea

I've given up on the iPhone, but thanks for the tip about frash. I really wanted to install Flash apps, but they've said no to that, so I'm saying no to them. When my Macs expire, I may just give up on them altogether. I hear Windows 7 is good, and for the money I paid for my Mac Pro I could have a super sweet PC.

I'm all Droid from this point on.

My system is older but works pretty good. Its an AMD atholon 3000+ with a gforce 5200 (256 mb)videocard. XP with service pack 3. High speed cable. I have been coming to this site for awhile, since before the big crash, the problem just started within the last few weeks. I dont have the same problems on other videosites that I use. Just wondering if it was just me.
I guess I could try other browsers, I do have chrome , safari and firefox. I just never needed them untill Joedirt pointed out that I'm fuckn stupid.
Anyways...Its not that Im impatient, I have let the frozen page sit for minutes to see if it will load. Task manager reports "non-responsive" so I have to end task.

Charles Bukowski kicking his soon to be fiancé

what makes a great poet?
insanity? like emily dickenson?
or technical brilliance? like shakespeare?
or is it something less quantifiable?
like courage..
and honesty..
the ability to lay open your wounds and lay naked and raw.
while vultures of pretension nibble on the gristle of your endeavors.
or is a great poet something that is spoon fed to you by your english lit teacher?
and if that is the case you need to sit down, shut up and realize you dont understand poetry.
you may understand the historical relevance of whitman all the way to keats but you dont understand poetry.
you may be able to write a perfect sonnet.
rhyme amd meter..cadence..flawless..
and you still wont understand poetry.

bukowski reacted how any one of us would after being told our future partner is going to FUCK anybody she/he wishes to.
we would most likely have restrained from violence, especially being on TV.
he only did what we would have WANTED to do.
and yet you sit there and judge him for his lack of restraint.
so...
he is the dick for acting and you are not for only WANTING.
i say we are all dicks.
at least bukowski had the balls to show his rage and hurt.
we would remain quiet like little pussies, hiding behind the facade of civility.
so really...who is the dick?

WERE MONSTERS INCORPORATED! WE SCARE, BECAUSE WE CARE!

*sigh* I unfortunately agree. This is coming from the same company that now disowns who actually invented the microprocessor because the 70s were inconvenient for them. Hell they used an actor in the "Inventor of USB" ads? I can only imagine now that all those people at the end are all actors and never even stepped foot inside Intel headquarters and have AMD processors on their home computers

A conversation with Jonathan Ive (Apple's Design Maven)

westy says...

"I remember the first time I sore an apple product because I realized IM ABOUT TO BE RIPPED OFF "

apple keyboards are cold to the touch and uncomfortable to use . the default mouse is frustrating im afrade 4 buttons are better than 1 (harder to learn but faster once mastered). I ohnistly don't think you can produce stuff faster on an apple pc than you can on a custom pc , also the custom pc will afford the user far more comfort and hardware speed for a far cheaper price.

the majority of the time apple design is like what dyson hovers have become its design for design sake all part of there marketing kind of like how many clothing brands operate. granted every now and then they do come up with valid and usfull design that benefits usability and function but then they try to transfer that to other products or aspects of the company it simply dose not apply to.

But most of all I Hate the anal superior attitude that the company enjoys to perpetuate and many of its users seem to enjoy. I don't mind it if a user is enjoying a good product and merly stating the facts for example I pods , imac laptops , can be very good devices for specific types of user but its when people blindly follow the entire company and all of its products. its like console fan boys or people that blindly follow AMD over lintel.

apple often end up making what I would consider to be fundamental product flaws in the pursuit of visual design. As i said the 1 button mouse is just plain stupid , the shiny back on ipods that gets scratched up, the lack of screen protectoin on ipods forcing users to put them in a case if they want the screen to remain visable , the ipod nano easy breakable scree, The lack of connectivity on the laptops. having the pc in the same unit as the screen forces the user to replace both costly devices when one brakes or malfunctions.

I do wish whoever that more companies used brushed aluminium to encase gadgets if apple are good at anything its sturdy laptop cases.

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

Razor says...

I'm a long time PC Gamer. While I cut my teeth on Colecovision and Atari, PC gaming still remains my favourite way to play.

Traditionally I've been mainly a FPS gamer, starting off on Wolfenstein 3D and moving on from there. Quake II multiplayer (and Action Quake 2) took up good amounts of my time in the late 90s. Even went to a couple competitions. Shit, has it been that long?

My library has gotten pretty big over the years: Doom (Ultimate, II and 3), Quake (original, II, III and 4), Unreal, System Shock 2 (one of my all-time favourites), Deus Ex (don't get the sequel, it sucks), Half-Life (original with expansions, 2 and both episodes), Team Fortress 2, FarCry, Crysis (which kinda sucked), S.T.A.L.K.E.R (one of the scariest games I've ever played), FEAR, Bioshock, No One Lives Forever 2 (fucking awesome, I hope a good sequel is eventually made), WoW with both expansions, Fallout 3, BF2, BF2142, RTCW, a bunch of Star Wars Games like Jedi Knight and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter... and that's just what I remember having and not merely what I have played =P I don't think I want to know how much I've spent on games over the years.

I'm an addict =)

I continue to build custom PCs for my gaming needs. My current system is a AMD 64 X2 4200 + 4GB DDR2 6400 + GeForce 8800GTS 640MB + RAID 0+1 array running Windows Vista (yes, all my games work, even the real old ones), soon to be Windows 7. I've calmed down on the upgrade front and mainly just build a new system instead when the time is right. In this case that might happen in the next year or so. Then again, I may just upgrade storage and video. Who knows?

This is a hobby I don't think I'll ever outgrow. It's cool how PC gaming has gone full circle and is getting back to it's indie roots (remember Apogee and Epic Megagames shareware?). Valve is helping this a ton with Steam, making easier for one-man operations to put out profitable games. I'm considering trying some game development of my own.
