Jimmy Kimmel - Honey Boo Boo Nature Special

kid gets fatter and her teeth worse every year... hurray for High Fructose Corn Syrup and Estrogen-like Activity in plastics! Ruining more than a generation of our fellow persons before they even go to school.

These things are responsible for the Obesity, Early Puberty, and ADD/ADHD, the main health problems... and yet Corporations are People, my Friend (tm).

Read the labels, eat cheaper fruits and vegetables, and drink filtered tap water... you will live longer and not grow tits.

That a correlation is valid does not make it interesting.
I'm also a bit confused by your claim. Places with extremely high density, e.g. NY, CA, and MA, have lower ADHD figures than places like AK.
>> ^grinter:
>> ^residue:
I think you're drawing conclusions with too little evidence. Cases of ADHD would also increase with density because there are simply more people. You would need to compare percentages by normalizing cases to the population before you could make any real conclusions. (But I agree with your conclusion in that it makes sense)
>> ^grinter:
Anyone find it interesting that the prevalence of ADHD correlates with population density? (and yes the map showed per capita values.. I looked it up)
It's like if you live with too many people around you and not enough free space, you find it hard to focus.

No conclusion, just speculation.
But, my defensive side needs to point out that:
1) the correlation is valid, regardless of what is driving it.
2) as I pointed out, the ADHD prevalence figure he showed already controls for population size.

Ok, fine.. I'll take a quick and sloppy look at the data:

The relationship doesn't hold for the super dense states, but if you look at states with under 200 people/m^2, then population density does strongly predict ADHD rate (linear regression: r^2 = 0.271, d.f. = 34, p = 0.001)
I'm not saying that I think density per se is really driving this relationship.. but still think it is worth considering.

Obama worse than Bush

I think it's about where you start from. Without opportunistic pillaging in these countries they wouldn't be a threat at all.
In fact they wouldn't have gunpowder let alone stinger missiles.
Obviously you can't unscramble the pudding and those now involved have to deal with it every day until the empire collapses under the weight (and this is the reason they all have sooner or later, ask the Brits, ottomans, romans etc). Still at least a couple of hundred fat families got a bit fatter - and will be able to buy large stakes in what comes next..
Btw as for Pakistan there was a whistleblower about nuclear secrets leaking who got totally crushed by the US gov a few years back. Pakistan going nuclear was a VERY shady episode that no-one seems to be free to speak about yet. Or maybe it's just slipped into the national ADHD..

I agree with it being where you start from, or with how you see our world. When I look at human history, I don't see any point in it where opportunistic pillaging wasn't the order of the day for whomever was strongest or able to. Perhaps that's why my bar for calling a national action 'good' is different, my view of history leaves me with extremely low expectations.

Pakistan has slipped into the national ADHD on the commoner level. At the decision making level, there has appeared to be a coordinated effort to say very little about Pakistan. I think largely due to the (IMHO correct)belief that Pakistan's current political environment is a giant house of cards being kicked at from all directions. Mark my words, by the end of this year I expect to see Pakistan once again under military rule. Currently it looks like the guise will be court appointed military rule to restore order and enable democratic elections in the near future.

The military leadership has consistently benefited from maintaining a degree of internal conflict and instability between the tribal regions and the government. Using the age old tactic of having a common enemy/opponent to unite the rest of the country behind. Of course, the military doesn't want a long term solution to that conflict, they want the conflict to go on forever as it is in their interest. The downside for us was that the Taliban gained enormous power and influence throughout the tribal regions in all that. They gained enough that they were a bigger challenge than the tribal regions themselves, as unlike the tribes the Taliban could hit back deep into Pakistan proper. Until the events of 9/11, the military(Musharaff at the time) handled this by having a pseudo alliance with the Taliban, basically allowing them to govern the tribal regions of Pakistan. After 9/11, American leadership decided they weren't comfortable with the Taliban by and large controlling large swathes of a nuclear armed state and maintaining an alliance with them of undetermined strength.

Of course, nobody in America is able to talk about it that way, because it would further strengthen the deeply anti-American sentiments in Pakistan already, maybe enough to tip the scales towards siding with the Taliban instead of America.

levels of consciousness-spiral dynamics & bi-polar disorder

shagen454 says...

To me this video represents liberalism in society... which is why I want to see what QM says about this. Without liberalism running rampant through the 60's I feel many of these topics would still be taboo. Through liberalism I feel as though consciousness has expanded on many fronts. Although, don't tell that too a business man - they're not supposed to be empathetic with humans who are below them in the hierarchy.

It seems like this video has a couple of things going on. It wants to talk about the evolution of consciousness & how it relates to being bi-polar in our modern world. But, mental illness for the masses in America is just a drug war. "Buy these, don't buy those". It's largely a fabricated industry & consciousness is another story.

As far as I can see on the topic of evolved consciousness - many, many, many more people in liberal cities have evolved. But, I think the internet is a great device so I think if someone is interested in certain aspects of reality they too can evolve their consciousness & thought processes from the middle of no-where in Kansas; if they really care to or know to. I mean we're constantly expanding QM's consciousness - he just doesn't know it yet he's afraid of it!

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was a teenager by a psychologist... but I may as well have been diagnosed bi-polar. I was pissed off at the world even though I had it all and was fairly sheltered... and that was the problem. It was too peaceful & I knew the world was out there waiting for me to find out the truth. So, I'm not exactly sure if we could say that my affliction was/is the symptom of post-modern evolution of consciousness but just an annoyance of mundane life tangled up with general anxiety.

I definitely think many people could benefit from "alternative medicine". I know it has a new agey bad wrap. I was prescribed both ritalin (legalized speed) & zoloft (what the hell is it? I don't know!) which are obviously fairly potent. I've experimented with herbal shit like 5-HTP which helps produce more serotonin and it works. It's not as potent but if someone doesn't have a serious mental illness it can work for short-term use and is great for people who would rather not turn into a zombie/robot.

As far as weed... I'm not sure if pot is the greatest thing for someone who is "bi-polar" or super depressed... mushies are great for positive consciousness just don't take em when you're feeling low, lol!

Either way, no one can be happy all of the time. We're human after all. Even though I hate the (human capitalist pig waste) fucking world - I am happy & people always tell me I'm super positive hahaha!! They can never know the truth!

Matt Damon defending teachers

heropsycho says...

Before you say something like this, go teach for a year in a typical public school, and let me know how you feel afterwards. If you haven't, then it's best to refrain from speaking about things you don't have a clue about. I taught 8th grade history.

You want an example of how you can get eaten alive because of students, "hapless: school administrators, and idiotic parents in one example? How about when a parent fights tooth and nail with lawsuits to keep their kid from being suspended by blaming his kid's severe ADHD for why the student constantly distracts other students and disrupts the class? Parent refuses to make the student serve detention, administrators suspend as much as they can, only to get overruled by courts, who put the kid right back in your class. Administrators are doing everything they can legally, and you know if you send the student to the office, you'll get to go to the 15th parent conference, or 2nd or 3rd legal hearing about this one kid out of 150 you teach. This is on top of lesson plans, grading papers, dealing with other problem students, idiot parents, etc.

>> ^chilaxe:
You've got to be kidding to me. How low-human-potential do you have to be to find STUDENTS, hapless school administrators, and idiot parents with a fraction of your intelligence intimidating?

If by special you mean ADHD hyperactive disorder class. It seems to me that most of these kids are being given a free rein to behave the way they need to even if it means not paying attention to the teacher.

Have you ever had a dream like this?

Aren't the point of movie trailers to give the viewer a general sense of what the movie is about?
Being that I've never read the books, only have heard of them, I've now watched that trailer learning nothing about it and only came away with the possibility of contracting seizures and/or a serious case of ADHD with those 1/4 second, seemingly-unrelated clips.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking that. No idea how the movie will be but this may be the worst trailer I've ever seen.

And it's ShakyCam footage to boot. Yay.

To sum up, murder mystery with quirky character lead basically. Recommend watching the Swedish version since it's a great movie in and of itself.

Do have to say I prefer these kinds of trailers to ones that give away two thirds of the plot.>> ^brycewi19:

Gov't stopped funding charity, private donations surge 500% (Politics Talk Post)

Crosswords says...

I'd have to agree with bea, this is probably more due to the mass amount of publicity its getting. What happens when the news cycle's ADHD finds something new to freak out about? Or even if planned parenthood is able to keep itself funded purely by donations do other charities suffer?
