Isn't the A350 more like Airbus's response to the 787 Dreamliner... well, they likely both started design near the same time, just Boeing managed to beat them to out. I'm not sure where either company will try next. The A350/787, A340/777 and A380/747 markets cover all but more regional flights. So it'll be interesting to see where they go next...

We don't see the entire test flight; they could well have raised the gear later. If they didn't raise the gear even later, it's because Boeing might have been (quite reasonably) afraid that they might not be able to get them down again (new jet, test flight, novel electronics systems, huge commercial pressures, etc etc etc). Every test flight has a specific menu list of things that are supposed to get done and each of those things gets done in sequence. You'll also notice the two chase planes that followed it to the horizon, watching for leaks, loose panels, anything that could threaten the test flight and safe return of the aircraft. And after all, it's not like the 787 has ejector seats---and, every time Boeing develops a new jetliner, it's betting the entire company's net worth. Alas, being private, there was no way to short it and capitalize on this investigative coup de grace. And while there are no winners, there are plenty of losers? Who - why US taxpayers of course. Why? Because as some may recall, Solyndra is one of the "shining examples" of Obama's $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. After all none other than president Obama said that Solyndra is "leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future.” He also cited it as a success story from the government’s $787 billion economic stimulus package." Alas Solyndra has now become a less than shining example of the complete catastrophe this latest exercise in pointless Keynesianism has been, all on the backs of US taxpayers. But don't worry, Obama is about to bring us a fresh new such fiscal stimulus catastrohpe any minute. This time it will be different.
