Great Rant from God Bless America

ulysses1904 says...

So that makes him a hipster elitist because he's not a Jerry Springer fan? Count me as one of them too because I watched that Springer element go from fringe to prime-time mainstream over the past 15 years and there's no escaping it. The in-your-face booger-eating shock value that at one time you only saw in the mentally-challenged kid in your school.

And now this instant powdered fame has become a bankable commodity, if you're a pretty girl who eats her own earwax or admits to liking the smell of farts you can become a star. Or you don't mind pranking your mother on-camera by telling her that you're pregnant with your high-school art teacher's baby, just to "push the envelope" of reality TV.

Like the guy in the movie my workplace is full of college grads who were weaned on this crap, it's all they know. They talk like they think they are some sitcom sidekick, spitting out this stream of snarky, hip, pop-culture references and this week's memes and reality show updates. With a smug grin because the studio audience in their head is cheering them on.

So you can have it. Call it a hipster pose but I am too good for this crap. I don't care if there are 32 million of them, this crap is for morons and it will only get worse.
>> ^GenjiKilpatrick:

So you're including yourself in that group, yes?
Or are you too hipster for that? "I was counter-culture before counter-culture was a culture."
>> ^gorillaman:
I hope we all understand that you can nod your head along to the sentiments in this video and still be a part of the problem.

Congresswoman Shot In The Head Point Blank 6 Others Killed

dystopianfuturetoday says...

From a DHS memo, as reported by FOX:

No direct connection, but strong suspicion is being directed at American Renaissance, an organization that Loughner mentioned in some of his internet postings and federal law enforcement officials are investigating Loughner's possible links to the organization. The organization is a monthly publication that promotes a variety of white racial positions.

"The group's ideology is anti government, anti immigration, anti ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti Semitic," according to the memo which goes on to point out that Congressman Giffords is the first Jewish female elected to high office in Arizona. A recent posting on American Renaissance's website on January 7 begins with an article entitled: "Exit poll: Whites are Different." The site goes on to list anti-immigration articles. Investigators are also pursuing Loughner's alleged anti-Semitism. ...

According to the memo, Federal Judge John Roll's wife told law enforcement that he was not supposed to be at the rally but was called an hour beforehand and decided to attend at the last minute. Roll reportedly ruled on a controversial 32 million dollar civil rights lawsuit in February 2010 that elicited death threats for him and his family resulting in added security detail being assigned to him as a result. ...

Urgent Warning about Gardasil

BoneyD says...

The CDC state they have been monitoring Gardasil closely and they state that as of 30 Sept. 2010, 56 deaths have been reported out of a total of 32 million doses. http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/vaccines/hpv/gardasil.html. Like Skeeve pointed out, that's 0.000175% of all doses given, an incredibly low number.

There has been no established causal link between these deaths and the use of the vaccine, even cases of blood clots were mostly found to be related to other risk factors.

Now unless we can no longer trust the CDC, I'd say that it's probably a pretty safe bet that this vaccine is worthwhile. I've not done a ton of research on this (obviously) and am always willing to alter my position based on the evidence, but it really feels like this is yet another case of unscientific anti-vaccine hysteria.

Obama Confronts Heckler Demanding Public Option

I work for the only self-sustaining office in the fed gov't. If I got laid off it would take them 9 months to do it. So tomorrow? Nope.

>> ^longde:

Do you own your company? How do you know you won't be layed-off tomorrow? Many professional class assholes thought just like you before this last season of layoffs. >> ^Sigh:
What most people around the globe fail to realize. Those of us who have healthcarThe already don't give a rat's ass about the 32 million who didn't. Now my rates will go up because some moron who couldn't educate himself enough to get a decent enough job where they could get healthcare? Fuck that. I am selfish for saying that? Hell yes. Do I care that I'm selfish? Hell no. Fuck stupid people.

Obama Confronts Heckler Demanding Public Option

longde says...

You, obviously, must possess health insurance regardless of the bill's passing.

It's a step in the right direction, and better than nothing.

>> ^joedirt:

32 million AMericans are going to have to come up with $10,000 to be gouged by insurance companies.
There is zero health care in the bill, only more costs and mandatory pork for insurance industries.
Zero price caps. Zero caps on deductables or co-pays.
Anyone who thinks the Health Insurance bill is good is an idiot, or a black President.

This game cost $32,000,000 to make

Kreegath says...

Just wanted to add that dubbing is much harder than getting the words synchronized with lip movement.
Oftentimes, words and sentences of one language can't be directly translated into another. They can, for instance, have cultural aswell as linguistical differences, not to mention that proverbs and slang expressions can be notoriously difficult to translate with their original meaning intact. The dubbers also have to take into consideration regional dialects and find a suitable counterpart in the second language in order to preserve the atmosphere of the game.
With a budget of $32 million, it's hard to believe the producers simply wouldn't care to put any effort in the English-speaking version of the game. To me, it sounds more likely they hired some dubbing company with solid television experience but with a sketchy background in computer game cutscenes, resulting in what we see here. Also, the writer and dubber teams could have been separate groups with no direct contact with each other, which understandably makes it harder for both to do their job effectively (not to mention if one is based in Japan and the other in the US).
I'm sure there are people who don't find this cutscene appaling in the least, there might even be people who enjoy it thoroughly. We who didn't like this at all might simply be the wrong crowd, and not the people they were aiming for. It's kind of like how I obviously was the wrong crowd for Final Fantasy 7, a game which is revered around these parts but something I personally just couldn't enjoy in the slightest.
Even though this particular cutscene was almost unbearable, I wouldn't say the dubbing of the whole game was bad, nor that it's the dubbing itself that's the real problem.
It could be interesting to see the same cutscene in its original language (Japanese?) and compare the two. Is it the translation, the script, the voice actors or a bit of everything?
