God, the petulant, petty whiner

vairetube says...

homophile... awesome..

"The homophile movement in the U. S. developed early in the 1950s with the formation of the Mattachine Society, the Daughters of Bilitis, and One. Donald Webster Cory's The Homosexual in America served as a manifesto for these groups which were dedicated to improving the "plight of the homosexual." The tiny groups' publications in the 1950's encouraged gay and lesbian people to "act normal" and fit in (lesbians belong in dresses, gay men don't), and recruited prominent "experts" like psychiatrists and psychologists to comment on homosexuality. The experts were often willing to concede that homosexuals are not dangerous, and that they can even "make a contribution to society," but precious few granted that homosexuality is anything but a mental illness.

The accommodationism of the homophiles has often been criticized as cowardly, but had they marched in the streets in 1955 shouting "out of the closets into the streets," the way gay libbers did fifteen years later, they would have found themselves locked up en masse on Lewd Vag charges, or worse."

i learned something today and now so did you!

What the hell is this? 1990! Christ, that was like yesterday. The Internet is so much older than that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet

You can't deny that the Internet and TCP/IP came out of the United States.

Also, where are your Mars rovers again?

I'm just winding ya up, I love England.

How about the internet and modern computing you ungrateful twat (and UAVs and cluster bombs and MOAB and GPS)

From Wikipedia:

'Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee OM KBE FRS FREng FRSA (born 8 June 1955) is an English computer scientist credited with inventing the World Wide Web. On 25 December 1990 he implemented the first successful communication between an HTTP client and server via the Internet with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student staff at CERN. He was ranked Joint First alongside Albert Hofmann in The Telegraph's list of 100 greatest living geniuses. Berners-Lee is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the Web's continued development, the founder of the World Wide Web Foundation and he is a senior researcher and holder of the 3Com Founders Chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).'

Sure, the concept of packet switching was first documented in New York, and I'm not about to claim the internet for Britain. But that does mean you can't claim the entierty for the US either. The long and the short of it is that it's a joint effort. No one nation can claim the internet. Which is kinda cool, as it emphasises the point of the thing.

On other matters, such as comedy, there's no point in arguing it seeing as its a matter of personal preference, its like arguing what is the best colour or the best number, fucking pointless. I might think that Michael Mcintyre is one of the most promising comedians I've seen in a long time, alot of other people will find him annoying, personal preference is what makes things interesting, arguing your point on it however is like being one of those dipshit hecklers in the crowd. Sit down, shut your mouth and wait for the next act.

Milton Friedman on Greed

jdbates says...

Not everyone pursues their own self interests! Look at jonas salk-
From wikipedia - While being interviewed by Edward R. Murrow on See It Now in 1955, Salk was asked: "Who owns the patent on this vaccine?" Surprised by the question's assumption of the requirement of a profit motive for his creation, he responded: "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"

His self interest was in saving lives! He was even fought on releasing the vaccine by the scientific community, and snubbed by them for doing it anyway!

Nuclear Bomb tested with US soldiers on ground

spoco2 says...

>> ^deathcow:
> I'm sure these soldiers didnt live long and healthy lives after marching
> through that stuff.
I dont think they were exposed to fallout, or radiation. The radiation sick/kill zone around these small nukes is actually tiny. If you avoid the fallout, your OK.

Erm... except:
From This page about experiences with the Nevada tests shows the US military's horrendous treatment of their own populous during this:

After thousands of sheep died immediately after a radiation cloud passed over them, some southern Utah ranchers brought unsuccessful suits against the federal government in 1955. The government response in court was that “a combination of factors including malnutrition, poor management, and adverse weather conditions” led to the animals’ death. (Killing Our Own [36]) Internal memos to the contrary from AEC researchers were suppressed. Sworn statements by sheepherders, testifying such epidemics among their herds of livestock had never happened until the fallout clouds went over them, were discounted and the ranchers were ridiculed by government officials. Many of the communities in Southern Utah constantly dusted with fallout were predominantly Mormon. They didn’t drink or smoke, as their religion commanded, so cancer was not prevalent. However, in 1956 and 1957, many people were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, other types of cancer or acute thyroid damage. Prior to this, cancer was rare. By 1960, there was an epidemic.

So... yeah, trying to suggest that these nukes were 'safe' is a little insane.

In fact read the rest of that page, with interviews with soldiers posted on during those tests... a calous disregard for the well being of people and animals was shown by the US Government during that time. And I'm sure those with the disregard explained it all away with the bullshit reasoning of 'It's for the safety of the nation'

H.R. 1955: Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007
-http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-1955

Sorry admins. In your desperate attempt to please all of the people, all of the time, you ignore a fundamental law of the universe...that it is in a constant state of flux, chaos, and disorder, as much as you would like to see things (idol worship of mammon) flow progressively forward, you follow the same flawed model that has made some of the most dangerous individuals on the planet, the most inebriated with power consolidation and empire, into the neuvo-hitleresque herders, who have been granted license by the herd, to place rings in noses, and meat in corrals....as many as they see fit, to improve upon their totalitarian tactics, with a view to world domination.

You think that it is fantasy, the ramblings of perceived deranged and damaged minds....once you give in to the radical fringe's demand for "justice", you open the way to all manner of coop, control, enslavement, fear, and death.

Projected onto the internet dynamic, is may seen in the plethora of tunnel-reality blogs, the very beasts you seek to break from with this project....it is not reasonable, that one person, or group of persons, fueled by their emotional, irrational demands for "absolute fairness", should dictate...cloaked in what appears to be simple courtesy, respect, and the absence of ill-will or"hate" towards individuals, is the me me me me screaming, of an un-actualized, ego-driven child, screaming for the sake of screaming, in order to impose their will over all, and all the while, the only entitlement they truly have, has been stolen from them at birth by the grinch, and returned to them looking nothing like xmas.

Only the admins and these demanding children know who these vermin are, (ohhhh, was that hate speech??, go back to elementary school, motherfuckers!) but be damn these weaklings, vampires, and energy suckers. The only thing that will be missed, as these leech-like patrons come and go, is another juvenile link, some borrowed flavor-of-the-week diatribe about racism, fascism, or equal rights for the batshit-insane...and as sure as they leave, another will pop up in their place, devoid of anything but a pom pom and bullhorn for the home-team(prevailing, superficial yet destructive dogma, place in their minds by their programmers)And that is what prompted this post...some pm's to admins by a minority fringe, most likely some of the more vocal up-and-comers, who in their passion for promulgating fairness and love, non-hate and flowers, are really just screaming, "Listen to me and do what I say!!"...

"That's trying a bit too hard to make our attempted assistance for community safety/well-being seem like the work of the Gestapo, especially when this change does not harm anyone in any possible way."

funny lucky, you described in that statement, one of the fundamental flaws of not learning from history's mistakes....("we are only trying to help you, why are you so mad?..this can't possibly be bad, if on the surface, it looks simple and natural??")"what does "harm" mean in the context of that sentence? Rationalizations like these, are why the world is going down the shit-hole, at break-neck speeds.

but don't mind me, I am simply an observer...trapped in a world I never made.

Christopher Hitchens "Debates" Bill Donohue on Mother Teresa

HadouKen24 says...

Actually, Kreegath, the letters Mother Teresa wrote about what Hitchens calls her loss of faith go all the way back to 1955. She reported a feeling of great spiritual darkness all through the years of her famous ministry.

I agree to some extent with Hitchens. I suspect that the real root of her "loss of faith," as Hitchens calls it (not entirely accurate), is that she was depending on a deity that ends up not exactly as advertised. I went through something similar myself at one point, and ended up leaving the faith.

That said, her perseverance in the face of doubt probably makes her an even more appropriate symbol of faith for modern Christians. From a Christian point of view, such endurance is incredibly praiseworthy.

1984. They're behind schedule, but they're working on it!

I agree with you, and think both you and I have the nation's best interest at heart. I do love America, but I just don't feel as proud, or as free, as I once did. I really can't name any freedoms or liberties that I've lost, It's just a feeling that I have. And it's the fear that I could some day lose them. Legislation like the Patriot Act and HR 1955 and Executive Order 51 really make me want to put my tinfoil hat back on. All this legislation is intended to keep us "safe", yet between the lines of each seems written the powers to oppress and subdue us. You come across as thoughtful, rational, and patriotic. If it were up to you, I'd feel a lot more comfortable, but unless you're a senator all you and I can do is vote.

>> ^LeadingZero:

Say the United States government, military and intelligence agencies actually did turn into a full out Orwellian society; they monitored our every movement, watched and limited our every purchase, controlled what films and books are produced, posted cameras on every corner, required us to report every anti-government utterance made by our neighbors, etc...
