30-storey building built in 15 days

rich_magnet says...

The title should be more "30-Story Building Assembled in 15 days". I'm willing to bet more than 15 days went into prefabricating all the parts. I'm also skeptical of some of the claims: 5x more energy efficient (than what, and how is it measured?).

Still, pretty neat. I wonder what it would be like to stay in that hotel.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I think this is really well put. I like the idea of a mutebox.

Clearly, we're all opinionated mofos and are going to butt heads.
So yeah, to slow VideoSift's inevitable slide into a niche version of youtube - comments and all - Civility is important.
Since Dag and Lucky probably have more important things to do than babysit, and VideoSift was founded on the principles of self-correcting stewardship or whatnot..
We should find a solution to maintain civility that satisfies both.
All that said, the two best method for returning civility to VideoSift have been suggested by @rottenseed & @lucky760:
      1. Anonymous "flag inappropriate" is a must.
[Tit for tat has been the name of the game on this site for a while, myself included. BoneRemake is just that infuriating sometimes, hah.]
      2. Muting malicious users for a few days is sensible.
[Ten flags by Gold Stars gets you 3 days in the mutebox? Maybe even a new badge to track frequency? Increasing mutebox timeouts of 3,7,11,15 days?]
      3. Crown Stars could be our own CSI!
[Crown users could browse the list of users in the Mutebox in order to help mediate.
We all trust our Crown star members to be honest and somewhat impartial investigators, right? ...right?]
      4. Receiving enough "inappropriate" flags or MuteBox Badge levels summons the heaviest of hitters - @dag & @lucky760
[This insures only the douchey-est of douches are singled out for bannination.
If you don't get the hint to be more civil after 30 or 40 members repeatedly tell you to cut it out, it's clear you didn't join the sift to be a productive part of our community.]
Anywho, that was my 1/5th of a dime.
Peace, bitches trolls and douche bags. = P

Report From the Seal Slaughter - Spring 2010

Bidouleroux says...

How is this different from killing a fish by hitting the head with a hammer and then gutting it? The only difference really is that seals have harder skulls and thus may need to be hit two or three times before they stop moving completely (the first hit probably kills 95% of them, but some still move just like a headless chicken would).

By the way, rifles are used to kill adult seals, since they move too fast on ice. But of course you don't see that because it's not "brutal" enough. What you see in the videos is always hunting of 12 to 15 days old seals who have begun molting (their pelt changes from white to grey). These can be killed with only the hakapik since they can't move fast enough to escape a killing blow.

In Norway, a veterinary must be aboard each ship. Still the Norwegian rules for seal hunting state that : "Adult seals that are more than one year old must be shot in the head with expanding bullets, and can not be clubbed to death. The hakapik shall be used to ensure that the animal is dead. This is done by crushing the skull of the shot adult seal with the short end of the hakapik, before the long spike is thrust deep into the animal's brain. The seal shall then be bled by making an incision from its jaw to the end of its sternum. The killing and bleeding must be done on the ice, and live animals may never be brought onboard the ship. Young seals may be killed using just the hakapik, but only in the before mentioned manner, i.e. they need not be shot." (From wikipedia) Also, "In 2007 the European Food Safety Agency confirmed that the animals are put to death faster and more humanely in the Norwegian sealing than in large game hunting on land." The only difference with Canada I think is that Canadian hunters don't have to bleed them on the ice.

World of Warcraft has been down all day... (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

NetRunner says...

Be ready for it to be down a bit on Thursday and Friday too, what with the expansion and all.

BTW, as a free gift to makde up for the downtime, all your in-game mail from the last 15 days has gone poof. Enjoy!

Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama on Meet The Press

Offsajdh says...

That was brilliant. And as Time magazine writes:

"...the indisputable benefit that Powell brings Obama is that the former Secretary of State and general is sure to block out any chance McCain has of winning the next two or three days of news coverage, as the media swoons over the implications of the choice. It is simple political math: McCain has 15 days to close a substantial gap, and he will now lose at least one fifth of his total remaining time."

Georgia: No good guys, only hypocrites

cybrbeast says...

>> ^chilaxe:
On NATO's side, they would certainly ensure Georgia doesn't do anything stupid and stays on the straight path of democratic development.

On the path to democracy?
excerpt from link:
Nov 9, 2007

"That hardly squares with this week's violence—or with 15 days of martial law imposed by Saakashvili yesterday and expected to be ratified by parliament by the end of the week. All demonstrations are banned; all media is under temporary state censorship. The opposition-supporting Imedi TV station was forced off the air as riot police stormed into the channel's buildings late Wednesday night. News Web sites have also been closed."

Lets hope this was just a bump in the road to democracy, I'm skeptic though.

VideoSift New Server Fund (Sift Talk Post)

Just want to point out that in a little under 24 hours we've raised as much money as we make in 15 days of google ads.

Seeing as how VS gets more and more traffic couldn't you start looking for higher paying advertisers? When VS started ads they were like Winchestertonfieldville Iowa. Now it's more like Cincinnati Ohio. And if the trend keeps It will be like Las Vegas, except without all the prostitution.

Too early to promote? Need a limit? (Sift Talk Post)

Raytrace says...

i disagree. downvotes should be free to be given out as it's already limited to bronze star members who have earned the right to do it. if a video is having trouble making it out of the queue, a gold star can always save it. seems to give a nice balance.

promote also should be free to be given out.. the Free Hugs Campaign vid was promoted within 15 days which i totally agreed with. Not enough people were watching it then and still, it has less votes then most daily show/colbert report videos, which is ridiculous. Are videosifters really that cold?

Guys ... ever want to really sympathize with your girl??

choggie says...
