Nice sentiment. Too bad they'd go bankrupt IRL.

Individuals want facts and "real" news, differing opinions and "pure" knowledge.

People want their beliefs reinforced, good to triumph over evil, and -every now and then- a cute picture of a cat.

Yup, look at Chris Hayes' show... Informed, measured commentary and detailed analysis on important news stories that aren't part of the usual cable news hype factory. And he's getting absolutely destroyed in the ratings. And, to tell you the truth, as much as I appreciate his show, and as much as I like to think of myself as a discerning and sophisticated consumer of media, I don't think I could watch him regularly. Too boring.

And thats the rub - news was never meant to entertain. We have gorged ourselves on entertainment for so long that anything other than something that IS entertaining...is just seen as a waste of time (even though its beneficial!!).

This is where the Daily Show and Colbert Report format comes in handy. They have balanced analaysis of important issues, and its entertaining.

If CNN and MSNBC tried to mirror that (and somehow didnt fail miserably....), then we would all be better for it.
