Xtranormal - So You Want to Work in the Video Game Industry

I once played Starcraft for over 32 hours straight. My kidneys almost shut down.

It's (almost) all true!

I've worked 80 hour weeks, 28 days straight. I've worked an 18 hour day.

I've worked on children's games and derivative sports games and shovelware mobile games. I've worked a year on a game only to see it discarded by an uncaring publisher. I've seen original IP thrown out in favor of some random pop culture license.

But on the bright side, now after 10 years in the industry, I'm working for a great company on an excellent MMO. So sometimes it works out.

But not usually

Yeah... as a guy in the industry, I will confirm that this video is about 98% accurate.

Both in what the industry actually does and in what everyone else seems to THINK it does.

I like videogames, so...I'm going to shell out $60 every time a game that appeals to me comes out. Then I'm going to play it until I am sick of it, or until I get a new game to be fascinated with. Then I'm going to go to my shitty job and make them money that affords me such luxuries.

I worked in the video game industry for several years. It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It is a business, but I still really enjoyed it.

My most well known mod was done entirely on my own... CustomTF. Labor of love that became the biggest mod for Quake, but I couldn't have done it without my experience in the industry.
