Ukranian military helicopters strike Donetsk airport

The Ukrainian military have launched air strikes in attempt to regain control of the Donetsk airport from pro-Russian separatists.

I still don't get it...if those in East Ukraine want to be Russian, why don't they just walk/drive east? Is it that Russia won't take them, or that they don't really have a concern about their treatment and only want to steal 1/2 the country and destroy the other 1/2?
