Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), formerly referred to as magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) or, in chemistry nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), is a non-invasive method used to render images of the inside of an object. It is primarily used in medical imaging to demonstrate pathological or other physiological alterations of living tissues. MRI also has uses outside of the medical field, such as detecting rock permeability to hydrocarbons and as a non-destructive testing method to characterize the quality of products such as produce and timber.

The scanners used in medicine cost approximately US$ 1 million per tesla (T) and have a typical field strength of 0.3 to 3 T, with several hundred thousand dollars paid per year just for maintenance

Posted in memory of Paul C. Lauterbur, who passed away at 77. Paul won the Nobel Prize in 2003 for his work with MRI.

Oh yeah, and one or the recent basics of the MRI, is that if you go into the doctor for this and or that, they are as quick to suggest ordering one of these expensive motherfuckers at the drop of a cough, as psychiatrists are to continue to prescribe Ritalin to grade schoolers, or keep you on the couch till yer ankles are sore!!!!

Research is one thing....practitioners used as sluts to lure yer granny out of her retirement nest-egg is ugly.

I have done MRI once. They are loud even if I am partially deaf!

I loved having an MRI. I want a recording of that noise it makes... it had cool phase/flutter effects to it as the machine shifted to the different views. Of course, I am a freak that listens to MSBR/CCCC and other noise bands, so results may vary...

I have no idea how to actually get a stereo recording from the middle of the coil, though. It's not like you can bring any (metal) microphones anywhere near the machine.
