My Spanish is a bit rusty - but I wonder if "shut up" is the right translation?

"¿Por qué no te callas?" wouldn't that be a bit softer, something like "Why don't you quiet yourself?" I think if he said it in the imperative as "callete!" it would be shut up. Any native speakers care to chime in?
