In what is widely considered as one of the greatest Derby performances of all time, Secretariat beat the entire field of the Derby starting out as dead last.
Amazingly Secretariat ran every quarter of the race faster than the previous one and was still accelarating when crossing the finish line. This was unheard of until then in horse racing (usually the horses get slower the further they get into the race)
Another amazing fact: The finishing time of the second placed Sham was 1:59 4/5, a time which would have won every other race on that track, before and after this race.
ESPN listed Secretariat 35th of the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th century, one of three non-humans on the list.
After Secretariat died in 1989, an autopsy revealed his heart to have been 21 pound in weight, as opposed to the normal heartsize of 8 1/2 pounds for a thoroughbred.

catsaway9says...This was an incredible race by an incredible horse, and I enjoyed seeing it again. But - the music kind of spoils the video.

9062says...Hello. I'm the one who made this video, along with my good friend cf1970. I find it awfully presumptious of you to go ahead and embed OUR video and then complain about the music that has been used to tell the story of the race, especially when cf has posted it unedited for those who simply prefer the original footage. If you don't like the video, it's a free country, so why watch it in the first place? Especially when what you want IS out there! My project is NOT simply the reposting of his races. Visit my channel to find out more; there are plenty of people who like it; the project currently has over 500 subscribers! If you'd like me to send you a good copy of the 73 Derby unedited just drop me a line at YouTube.
