Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings

"'Adagio for Strings' is a work for string orchestra, arranged by the American composer Samuel Barber from his first string quartet. It is by far Barber's most popular piece."

I wish I could find the as intended quartet version on You Tube. If you have the chance to hear it, it's beautiful and more effective than a whole symphony.

You know I have to say that the piece does come across as a bit overwrought and unsubtle. I would like to hear the quartet version now but it's not one of my favourite pieces.

This is one of my faves.

I remember I froze on my bed and sat still the first time I heard it.

I heard this again last night and it still stops me dead in my tracks. I'd agree with the above, it's more poignant as a quartet.
