inflation has now gotten to the point that a nickel
is worth less than the metal it's coined from.

this happened in the 80s, with pennies.
their solution was to stop minting them from copper, and use zinc, covered in a copper skin. so i took a bunch of the new pennies, punched a tiny little hole in the edge, and left them sitting in a petri dish of acid.
hollow pennies.
