Pixar's "Cars" intro--our first look at Lightning McQueen

"Cars" is a kids/family film about hot-shot racer Lighting McQueen (Owen Wilson) who gets lost in a small town and learns how to be a good sport and the meaning of friendship.
This scene sets the tone for the movie, and introduces Lighting and other racers.

It was a three-way (tongue) tie! Some other tidbits:

The movie was originally called "Route 66". The name was changed to "Cars" so as not to imply a connection with the TV show "Route 66"

The Lighting McQueen "groupies" in the stands are modeled after the first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata.

One of the racing cars in the scene is white, has the Apple logo, and the number is 84, a homage to the "1984" ad.

Ironically enough, there's a scene in the movie when the character in the movie (lightening McQueen aka Owen Wilson) fakes a suicide attempt while drunk at a local gas station...
