Parunasu: Spooky Retro Japanese Cake Commercial

Parunasu was a Japanese cake company founded in Kobe in 1947, specializing in Russian cakes. Their early-70s TV commercial combined sentimental music and a black-and-white photo of a baby superimposed on a midnight blue starry sky. It became so popular in Kansai that everyone from that region over the age of 30 can probably sing this song.

Another Parunasu commercial from the same era follows.

Very interesting. Without reading the description I was just thinking: Haunting. Creepy. Russian. WTF.

But the history described in the summary make it just fascinating. What ever happened to the company and the commercials? Are they still around? If so, what are their commercials like now?

It's so interesting how the common experience of a commercial can sort of create a strange bond between a group of people. Even more interesting is when you enthusiastically ask someone "You know that commercial...?" and the vast difference in your feelings, if even on a near subconscious level, when the person answers "Yes! I know that one!" versus "Nope, haven't seen it."
