Obama on Rural and Working Class America, Circa 2004

This should provide some context to the recent controversy over some of Obama's comments.

Oh the irony. He expresses that the party should not look down on people but reach out to them. And the party accuses him of looking down on people.

Those with guns and religion to cling to are the lucky ones. The rest of us are left just being cynical and bitter.

those us of us with guns and religion are not exactly "clinging" to anything. WTF does that snarky comment even mean anyway? Even though I'm a tree-hugging organic-food eating, hemp-wearing liberal, I sometimes don't blame neo-cons for their nasty attitude. With comments like that, who needs rationale? Just be snide and condescending.

twiddlessays...

Who the hell is being snide and condescending? It is nothing more than sarcasm born of cynicism. I was not trying to disparage anyone's beliefs. If that comment offended you then perhaps you are clinging to something? Lighten up.

The whole point being that we can't have a reasonable discussion about issues that affect quality of life, because people have become too cynical. Instead politics is nothing more than such hot-button topics as religion-based values or guns. If you draw strength from being able to own a gun or from your religion then more power to you. Well, you are lucky because politicos will say lots of interesting things for you to listen to. Those of us without such strong feelings who would rather have more substantive discussions within domestic politics about such things as the economy, the way the government operates, and the quality of life are out of luck.

Seems to me this candidate wanted to have an honest discussion with people, and instead the focus is turned onto the word "cling" like it was a terrible thing to say. I did not intend my sarcasm to offend. It was aimed at the environment of political discussion and not one particular group of people. Thus, I will cling to my cynicism until we can get past this war of words. If we can stop being offended at every turn of phrase and have honest and thoughtful debate I'd be pleasantly surprised.
