Norman Mailer & Marshall McLuhan Debate, 1968

'Norman Mailer and Marshall McLuhan expound on violence, alienation and the electronic envelope. The clash of two great minds'.
Very intriguing clip.
Couldn't find many external specifics on this debate (i.e. none).
However there's more on Mailer here and here. He wrote a couple of interesting articles for the Huffington Post, both can be read here.
As for McLuhan, there's the obvious Wiki article and the official site.

I wish Television went back to this debate format. Cable news is on 24hrs a day but their debates are always random talking heads (one that obviously leans left and one that obviously leans right) who shout in little boxes for 2-5 minutes.

Absolutely brilliant clip, I agree with you 100%. The electronic medium would be a great one if it had more intelligent discussions like this. Instead of promoting intelligent autonomous thought it appeals to the most primal urges in 10 second clips so it doesn't loose the attention of the average viewer. The only place to find things even close to this is on public television and that is a shame.

Thanks alot for this one fedquip, its surprising to see how accurate they could have been on the evolution of technology / de-evolution of man so many years ago.
